  • "For All We Know" is a popular song published in 1934. The music was written by J. Fred Coots and the lyrics by Sam M. Lewis. It is a Jazz Standard, ranked as #111 on www.jazzstandar...
John Maurice Hartman (July 3, 1923 -- September 15, 1983) was an American baritone jazz singer who specialized in ballads and earned critical acclaim, though he was never widely known. He recorded a well-known collaboration with the saxophonist John Coltrane in 1963 called John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, and was briefly a member of Dizzy Gillespie's group and recorded with Erroll Garner. Most of Hartman's career was spent recording solo albums.
Credit the film and album The Bridges of Madison County with causing a great deal of excitement about crooner Johnny Hartman, a vocalist with a silky voice that almost defies description. Hartman has seen many of his albums reissued, with rapidly rising sales, since the release of the film. This collection marks the debut of Clint Eastwood's Malpaso Records label, which Eastwood intends to focus on jazz, and it's certainly a good start, featuring songs from Hartman, Dinah Washington, Irene Kral, and Barbara Lewis, as well as two versions of "Doe Eyes," an instrumental piece composed by Eastwood and arranged/conducted by longtime Eastwood collaborator Lennie Niehaus. Overall, the album is charming, low-key, and smooth, very much a record worth getting.

    For all we know
    We may never meet again
    Before you go
    Make this moment sweet again
    We won't say goodnight
    Until the last minute
    I'll hold out my hand
And my heart will be in it
    For all we know
This may only be a dream
    We come and we go
Like the ripples of a stream
So love me, love me tonight
    tomorrow was made for some
    tomorrow may never come
    for all we know...
    ~Instrumental~
    For all we know
This may only be a dream
    We come and we go
Like the ripples of a stream
So love me, love me tonight
    tomorrow was made for some
    tomorrow may never come
    for all we know...
    tomorrow may never come
    for all we know...

I FAIL TO UNDERSTAND WHY JOHNNY HARTMAN WAS NOT AS POPULAR AS BILLY ECKSTINE AND NAT KING COLE - HE HAS A BEAUTIFUL VOICE - AND HE DIED WAY TOO SOON - I HAVE BOUGHT ALL THE MUSIC HE HAS RECORDED AND ENJOY THOSE SONGS SO MUCH. THANKS FOR POSTING THEM.

Why isn't music and life like this anymore? There is no longer this kind of heart felt emotion and romance, so sad...

@Willie: Unfortunately, the audience for this great music isn't large enough for the producers, and very few writers around that would do it. Regrettable.

I suppose that during his first 9 years, he sang in collaboration with many of the greats, but not truly recording until 1955.Then, with the 1970s being difficult for singers clinging to the pre-rock American songbook, Hartman turned to playing cocktail lounges in New York City and Chicago. The soundtrack gave new birth to his vocals. Unfortunately, lung cancer took him much too soon.

As I, Laura. Until the film came along, I thought I had heard some great versions of it. But Johnny gives it a whole new romantic twist.

Danny Barrett, it seems to be in the right key as I play along with it on flugelhorn.

Why wasn't he more popular? At the time (early fifties) America had room for only one black mainstream singer (Cole). For a black male to sing pop love songs was not a "natural" choice. If you were a black performer, you had to be either a jazz or a blues singer. Everything else made white America uncomfortable. According to Greg Akkerman, only Cole "seemed to slip that leash", while Hartman was "economically chained to to the jazz industry". Hartman himself said, "I was trapped in jazz and I couldn't get out of it."

Good points. Although later in that decade, you could/should be including Johnny Mathis. If he wasn't singing pop love songs, I don't know who was.

We agree. Bet it was slowed down (probably electronically in the way it is slower, but doesn't drop in pitch?)
Maybe to make it seem more languid for purposes of the mood of the movie?
We've read that Mr. Coots wrote over 700 songs.
