2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale review: Does the new Italian small SUV actually rival BMW X1 and Audi Q3?

- The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale needs to be a success, because the future of the famed Italian brand is riding on it. The all-new small SUV enters a segment Alfa Romeo hasn't played in before and, therefore, should deliver incremental sales, of which it desperately needs, particularly in Australia.
Needless to say, expectations are high for the Tonale, and it'd better exceed them if it's to have any chance of truly challenging the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3, among others.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Deputy Editor James Cleary delivers his first impressions of the Tonale on Australian roads, where it hopefully flexes its Alfa Romeo genes to good effect. Fingers crossed.

Excellent review.Thank you. Spot on. I went from a Peugeot e2008 to a Ti Tonale 7 weeks ago. No regrets. Love the Tonale. Premium car inside and out and an absolute pleasure to drive. Standard kit very generous and matrix headlights are a game changer compared to the poor headlights on the e2008.Getting just over 45 mpg on average which is great considering the class of car the tonale is ( i just leave it in default "N" mode.)
Do you miss the padle shifters? The gear shift is noticable while you driving?
My new ride! Picking it up on Monday! Couldn't be more excited!
Fair review. My wife and I test drove the Veloce mild hybrid last week and we were both very impressed, so much so that we put a deposit down to order the upcoming PHEV, which we should be able to do in July. The mild hybrid is great but we would rather go for the PHEV as we are keen to only use electric for the school run etc. The extra power will also do justice to the awesome chassis. We have a Stelvio and the Tonale is a perfect little companion, with similar dynamics but probably a bit more appeal to the average upmarket driver. If European sales of the Tonale are an indicator, it should also sell well here. Onwards and upwards for Alfa Romeo👍
I have put a deposit on the PHEV still waiting to see how much though.
well done
the PHEV is really better

great car
So no sunroof option!?
Yes, I do believe so.
Prices go up in proportion that engine capacity decreases😅.
You're not wrong there!
this thing will eat your wallet with in 5 years good luck.
Lacks power, fake Alfa
Think I’d go for the new Honda ZRV instead
poor choice
