  • a how to video....my first of many to come....looking forward to sharing!!!! This is not how I usually would do this fix but thought people would like the minimalist tool and cost way...I usually would use all power tools...drill, driver, oscillating saw...the oscillating saw works great cause you can stick dowel in jamb of door with glue on it and then cut flush..much quicker...

    i've watched about 5 other videos and the fixes all seemed cheap or half-a$$ed to me. This is by far the best fix i've seen that also looks very sturdy. As a new home owner, this is exactly what i've been looking for!! Thank you.

    I have been a contractor for over 20 years, learned a lot of really great tricks from TH-cam over the years. But, you sir have hands down won the award for the best solution to a problem that I have ever seen!! I tried it today. Even the client's socks were even blown off. Thank you and I look forward to checking out your other videos. And, btw, I NEVER leave comments on TH-cam! That's how happy you made me!

    Actually the best advice I would tell your readers is that you allow the glue around the dowel plugs to dry for a minimum of 12 - 24 hours before you drill them out - especially for heavy doors such as a front door. Reason: Titebond and other professional wood glue manufacturers recommend this. Why? Because as David just stated, it takes time for the wood glue to cure and become stronger than the wood itself. If you only wait 15-20 min you risk not only the newly installed plug to possibly push in when you drill into it, but even if that doesn't occur, if the glue is not allowed the 12-24 hours to dry, as you screw in the screw the plug itself could also spin in the hole it is filling while you're screwing in the hinge screws - especially if the pre-drilled screw holes are smaller than the screw itself which is normal. While installing hinges following the steps David gives is common practice, the homeowner needs to be patient enough to let the glue completely dry/cure and bond with the wood. There is no air deep in the plug hole, so the glue needs to dry chemically. Good steps Dave. But please emphasize the need for patience. LOL

    Did this today on an exterior door. Drilled out top/bottom hinges with 3/8" bit and used a 3/8" dowel and pro-glue. David Mack makes it look easy and let me confirm... it is. Our house is from 1934 and we bought it in 2001. For 19 years I've dealt with a pretty crappy front shutting door but those days are behind me. Hinges are right and tight. Thanks, David. Game changer!

    If this is the first time you are having to tighten up a loose hinge, what I do is simply use much longer screws. Three inches long will work great and will screw right into the actual stud framing the door opening. That is the quickest way to do it.

    Try putting a wedge under the door before you remove the screws initially, the door will stay in place thru the rest of the repair. It frees both hands to better assist the dowel and screw insertion
    It's a trick an old carpenter taught me years ago.

    • @slizardthelizard1988
      @slizardthelizard1988 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @franktstets8037
      @franktstets8037 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@slizardthelizard1988 Depending on the size of the door, I've used wooden wedges called shims in bundles at the home improvement stores. On larger heavier doors I've used log splitting wedges. Two large straight tip screwdrivers stacked works well too. Just use your imagination and you'll be surprised what you come up with.

    Thanks! Worked perfectly even though I was a little concerned since I was needing to fix the stripped screws on the door part of the hinge and the door isn't a solid wood door. But went ahead and gave it a shot and it's holding solid. Simple to do. I will add that you can use pre-cut plugs that are fluted and makes cutting unnecessary and helps get more glue into the drilled hole. Thanks again!

    I have done all three ways over the years. Toothpicks to dowels and stud anchors. The 3" screw method was the faster and as strong as the others. Same time I was able to replace standard screw head to a Phillips head. Much easier to screw in. All good, owning a older home from 1940s. We had to fix a lot of doors.
    To stop doors from closing or opening. Add a tie to the door hinge pin. Remove one pin, add tie to hinge and insert door pin with a small hammer. Trim off extra tie. Door will now stay in place without opening or closing by itself.
    I always set up my refrigerator door so it closes automatically!!! Great set up when you have kids leaving the fridge door open. I level the fridge slightly higher in from then the back of fridge.

    Tip: Use a wedge or shims to hold your door up when you remove the hinge screws, it's that "third hand" you need to help keep the door in place. Then you just move the hinge plate aside to do your work, don't remove the hinge pin. And, especially, don't put a lot of excess stress on the other door hinge, you're going to have to repair that lower hinge now that you've torqued it out of shape.
    Tip #2: drill the dowel hole just smaller than the dowel for a snug fit, you won't lose your dowel in the hole. taper the dowel end to make it easier to start in the hole.

      Kragh Hertel agreed :-). A self centering pre-drill bit is great, too.

      Tip#2 was genius. Did this, with a little glue still, and I feel like it’ll be stronger because of it. Great advice!
      And to the author, great video. Thank you for sharing!

    This is the way I have always heard to do this right using good yellow wood glue let sit for day then re pilot new hole.
    Another way I thought was to use plastic molly anchor just tap it in.

    I used golf tees as they were the exact diameter as the hole ..I scored them with a utility knife so they snapped off exactly at the right length after inserting with wood glue. Door works fine now , and it was a heavy front door with spring loaded hinges

    Good idea how you fixed the issue though by not removing the door completely leaning the door at an angle without removing pin on bottom is putting stress on bottom door hinge screws as well screws in jamb that could easly crack wood & even twist hinge, I make it a practice & so simple just to pull all pins remove the door rather then taking the high risk of twisting bending bottom hinge or even pulling screws out & breaking the wood on door & jamb

    • @mackd654
      @mackd654  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that can happen..I believe I commented that you should remove the door unless you have three hinges...for the demonstration I did not to save the length of video. It did drop down more then I would have liked it to but the hinges on that door was quite sloppy...thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!!

    Gulf tees people, keep gulf tees in your toolbox, get the two size gulf tees ( preferably hardwood ) so you can fix any size hole, and in cases where people put like five different size screws over the years, the gulf tees allows to start from scratch with fresh holes and all the same size screws again ; )
    You're welcome!

  • @runnerandgunner7954

    Good solution to this problem. Here's another way: Remove the hinge screws one at a time. After removing a screw, with the hinge still in place held by the other screws, stuff the hole with as many toothpicks as you can (or a piece of dowel or a wooden golf tee, but no need to drill a pilot hole if you use toothpicks). Tap them in with a hammer to ensure the hole is stuffed full. Break off whatever remains outside the hole with a hammer or a utility knife. Put the screw back in. I would use a drill or an impact driver rather than a screwdriver, but that's just me. The toothpicks will fill the void inside the hole, the hinge will now be held on tight as a drum. Do the same with each hole one at a time. No need to remove the door from the frame. No need for a second person or "third hand" to hold the door. I had this recurring problem with my bathroom door. Every couple weeks I would have to tighten the screws on the hinge. After discovering the toothpick trick, I haven't had to touch it for 15 years.
