  • An experimental procedure that transfers blood plasma from a coronavirus survivor into the bloodstream of a patient still battling the disease is among the most promising treatments amid the pandemic. Its creation is credited to one man, Charles Drew. Drew was inspired to go into medicine after the devastating Spanish Flu pandemic took the life of his sister. Michelle Miller looks at Drew's life and accomplishments, and speaks to his daughter, Charlene Drew Jarvis, about his legacy.

It's a tragedy that more Americans are not aware. Broke my heart when Dana said she was unaware.

There are many Black contribution stories that have been suppressed. I'm glad that we are hearing more about the contributions of Black Women and Men that helped shape not only the US but the world over.

An amazing genius who prevailed against all odds in the hideous and grotesque ignorance of racism. We all owe Dr. Charles Drew a debt of gratitude.
    Thank you Doctor Drew

Dr. Charles Drew, MD trained my grandfather at Howard University also to become a medical doctor. Dr. Drew is the reason why any of us have a chance at survival after a significant loss of blood. The only reason.

Wrong! Bernard Fantus established the first hospital blood bank in 1937

    • @DD-rp2qr

Wrong! Dr. Sergei Yudin from Russia established the first blood bank ( actually 65 "banks") in 1930. Dr Fantus used that technology to create the first hospital blood bank in the United States (in Chicago). Dr. Drew revolutionized storage techniques to keep blood longer and developed more effective transfusion techniques that are the foundation of what is used today. He established the largest system of blood storage and discovered that plasma could be stored longer than blood. It would be fair to give all of them credit for their scientific contributions.

Blood Banks separate Blood Types. AA african American’s changed the worlds. we achieved and conquered the separation for blood distributions.

I thought the video would discuss in depth the real reason why he died. After all his contributions to the medical industry, to have a white hospital deny him his much needed blood transfusion, is a complete travesty to his legacy.

Not true. His injuries and blood loss were so severe that he could not be saved. His family later thanked the hospital for their efforts

      I disagree.
I had relatives who went to Howard University when he was on faculty there and are now senior citizens.
I do not believe anything that the media reports in terms of the deep South and this black doctor getting proper medical Care. It's my opinion that it is highly likely that Doctor Drew did not get the medical care that he deserved at the time that he experienced this accident; and I have seen over and over again since the death of
Mr. George Floyd that when I look the account of the circumstances surrounding his death on the internet, it is now beautifully covered over as being a Myth. Don't you believe it.

    • @Freewarrior2
      @Freewarrior2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@missjaszmine1968 it's true that his injuries were so severe that he couldn't be saved. In fact, in his state, a blood transfusion could have killed him.
We well know what the racial atmosphere was back then and it could easily be made that he didn't get care, but in this instance that wasn't the case.
Just like The Tuskegee Experiment there is some misinformation there too. Black folk weren't given syphilis, they already had it, but were only given a placebo (saline shots). They were never given penicillin once the medical community found out that that could treat it. They just left them with syphilis. Now that is still insidious regardless.

Invention, work process, integrity, policy and leadership. It’s so much… but look at Marie curie or Clara Barton… or Harriett Tubman… or land grant schools and large scale peanut farmers… who also understood their work in terms of history and backlash of group dynamics and how slavery expanded and subtracted. Y’all… I don’t think we really can comprehend how many have come before us… Viktor Frankel? Tesla? George Washington and Carver…. Lots of gratitude and humility and confidence….
