Here’s what we know about COVID-19’s impact on the brain

  • When COVID-19 first emerged, many researchers were focused on its impact on the lungs. But others, including Avindra Nath, Clinical Director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, suspected COVID could also have a profound impact on the brain. Brain autopsy data from those who have died of COVID-19 have confirmed these early suspicions, revealing damaged blood vessels and inflammatory cells. Less is known about the direct impact on the brains of people with persisting symptoms weeks after an initial infection, a condition known as Long COVID. What at first seemed like a laundry list of neurological symptoms has now been focused into major categories, says Serena Spudich, a neurologist at Yale University. Watch to learn how researchers and doctors have been teasing apart how COVID impacts the brain, and testing treatments to alleviate symptoms.

Had Covid in July 2020, haven’t been the same since. Prior to Covid, I’d had Lyme/CFS and some other issues so I was no stranger to brain fog but this is different. Covid left me with relentless migraines that felt like my brain was going to explode for many days on end. Fluvoxamine helped tremendously with the migraines and feeling of my brain being swollen but the side effects were really annoying. Things that I was previously good at, I’m not great at anymore. My sense of direction is not as good, I’m far clumsier, fine motor skills and spatial awareness are both diminished. Word recall and vocabulary have suffered. Then there’s the personality changes. I used to be funny, extroverted and sociable, I’m not anymore. Nothing really brings me much joy, it’s like I’m not making dopamine or seratonin. Food doesn’t taste as good, my sense of smell is still stronger than most people’s but it’s definitely diminished from what it was. I just feel like a hollow shell of the person I was before.
I try to fake my way through life and act normal but I don’t want to live like this for a lifetime. There’s so many of us who are suffering this hell and we really need help from Drs and scientists that are willing to take us seriously.

For headaches, you might be low on magnesium and vitamin b complex. Because both Covid and the vax have a form of adenovirus, it is necessary to increase your intake of vitamin c (1000-2000 mg daily) to counteract the virus as adenoviruses infect the brain. I also think fluvoxamine should be ceased immediately or weaned off of if you are losing motor skills and spatial awareness as it is a sign that something is going on with your cerebellum. Melatonin (10mg) can réverse the damage if it’s in early stages…. If you care about your health please stay away from SSRIs

I had Covid in January. After recovering I noticed I had what some have called brain fog. I really had trouble concentrating. For the record I do a lot of working out. Primarily aerobic but also some weights too. I decided to see if I could use my workouts to help. I decided to try this since I have experienced in the past how a good cardio workout really seems to clean out my system. I went and did two days of really hard cardio. I absolutely murdered it hard as I could for several miles. Particularly the second day. Brain fog was gone and haven’t seen it since. Don’t know if this could help someone else but it is my experience.

Considering the estimated 19 million lives that have been saved, I'd say that it doesn't. They do make large profits, but what industry doesn't? If you read articles and published papers on modern drug development (eg successful HIV treatment, gene therapy, innovative cancer treatments, new Alzheimer's drugs) over recent decades, you'll appreciate that they invest in the best graduate and postgraduate researchers, and technology to accelerate testing, in order to get real results that were unforeseeable decades ago.
It's not dissimilar to the way that Volkswagen is the largest car manufacturer and has huge, modern manufacturing and distribution facilities BECAUSE of their engineering excellence.

He can't eat anything solid. He told me that he tried to eat a few slices of well ripened mango but he vomited several hours later and it was completely undigested as if he had just sliced it. His doctors have ruled out physiological problems and are now treating it as a psychological problem. He's 60 years old and has never had problems related to stress. He's always been a laid back guy, generally positive, likes to crack jokes and active in church. He's also having heart problems. I feel so bad for him because he was very cautious during the pandemic but he had to take our mother to the hospital for skin cancer treatment that couldn't wait during the peak of the pandemic in New Mexico and both he and our mother caught covid, probably at the hospital. I warned people 2 years ago that covid is a bat virus and they are the most dangerous of all viruses and I compared it to the Lyssavirus that’s in bats in Australia, it can lay dormant in your brain for years and come out later and send you mad and you die, it’s Australia’s version of rabies. It can take anywhere from 1-7 years to come out and kill you. And this TH-cam video they put the Lyssavirus up on screen, I just knew it. I hate to say it but the brain fog is probably permanent. I've been battling it for 8 months, I also have vision problems now and the eye doctor told me it's not my eyes but brain damage similar to what he sees in veterans who suffer concussions from a blast. There is such thing as a viral TBI "traumatic brain injury" the brain swells up and is damaged just like when it's impacted. I have a ringing in my brain now thar sounds like a flourecent light bulb is going eeeeeeeee in my head. Never goes away. I never got a cough, the virus seemed to avoid my lungs. I hope I'm wrong and it goes away but I'm just learning to get used to feeling partially drunk all the time. For those of you who don't believe this I hope it never happens to you the trauma I've been through has made me crave death.

After covid it is like my GI problems started to have their own neurological problems. Involuntarily swallowing (!) started. My tongue and jaw started to loosen. It is unseen. I felt like there was a tremor and tension through my throat-esophagus track. After losing 15 pounds, 3-4 weeks later i got little better and gained my appetite, but then i spit light red blood with stomachache and throatache. I did endoscopy immediately but they didn't find anything. Then everything got worse. I lost my appetite for good over a year. I am experiencing a worsening throatache that no ENT professors can detect with camera. I have examined by over 60 professors. Gastroenterologists, ENT Professors, Neurologists etc.. i did blood tests, endoscopies, colonoscopy, CTs, MRs even EMGs. Throat pain is killing me. Loss of appetite, fatigue.. these are also challenging. I have other symptoms but i dont know how can i bare this throat pain. Gabapentine isn't working. Diclofenac isn't working. Many of my memories are wiped out, both short and long term. I have to keep a pad and pen with me at all times to capture important thoughts because 2 seconds later it may be gone. BLESS these physicians/researchers! It’s so refreshing and encouraging to see medicine move in this direction…well…these virologists and specialists. The entire medical system needs desperately to learn from these extraordinary individuals - proudly advocating for their patients, thus, remaining their primary concern! Their compassionate hearts are both evident and commendable! I truly hope medicine and future medical practitioners will use these physicians as “role models”! We need to encourage physicians/researchers to continue such compassionate, fruitful work and dedication to their patients…not just monetary gain or prestige! We cannot reward or permit the medical staff, medical companies, hospitals, pharmaceutical, and medical interest groups and businesses within the entire medical framework benefit from patients’ illness and perpetual suffering!! Medicine was designed to heal, prevent, and treat disease and other medical conditions! The patient should be the focus - NOT the astronomical monetary benefit! It would be an extraordinary boon for patients and medicine alike - if the practice had such experts dominating our system globally!!

I am 33, 5’9, weigh 130. Prone to clots, have taken aspirin since 23. Workout daily, I upped my dosage of aspirin to 5 81MG tablets before I had vaccine a year ago. (I am still on that self administered dosage) wart appeared 3 days after initial vaccine, had heart rates of 140-190, that still linger, as I type. What’s odd is that my extremities, whenever I have a injury, coagulates in front of me, I bleed, but I don’t bleed. The scary thing for me, is that 3 months after vaccine, I had nose bleeds every day for a month. I’m taking about the most insane, scary, nosebleeds I have ever had in my life. I filled almost an entire bathtub up of blood. They have since, ceased. I don’t understand why I feel clotty, yet that incident, was non stoppable.
I called Moderna after wart appeared, they recommended me not take the 2nd dosage and that somebody would get back to me. Nobody called. I called a cardiologist when my heart hit 189, they told me they could see me in a month. I called trust care about my nosebleeds, who I then had to pay a $40 co pay for a virtual visit, 😮. The issue with healthcare today, is we have all of the amazing specialist, yet while I understand referrals, it’s hard to actually find a normal basic general doctor. Especially due to the in and out places like trust care. Society keeps deleting the middle man in healthcare, and I am not understanding it. I waste more money looking for health professionals. It’s sad.

I developed unspecified viral CFS and have had it for nearly a decade. It was devastating. At one point I couldn’t walk due to the disabling fatigue and myalgia. Caused me to lose a lucrative creative career. I couldn’t function and my creativity went to the toilet as I was struggling to even speak coherently, let alone remember everyday objects. Although over the years the symptoms have lessened, I’m still so f’ing tired all the time and I can’t eat normal things that make no damn sense. The Dr’s think it was mono, but they’re always guessing as usual and have absolutely no idea how to prove or treat it except antidepressants that do nothing. I do remember my very first symptom was an uber painful burning sensation at the base of my spine that lasted a month, and hearing and seeing people as if in a tunnel. Then the unexplained fast heart rate and random arm pain started, that were pissing off the ER residents every time they had to discharge me because they couldn’t find the reason. Viruses are sob’s and I hate the lives they’ve ruined. I hate the idea they may possibly be persistent in our tissues and why isn’t there an antiviral to kill those mofos!!?

I also have issues with my kidneys now since I got the Remdesivir that I never was told I was going to get! I got the monoclonal antibodies and I felt like I got the fountain of youth! I also got Covid again 3 months later, I immediately got ivermectin and took it, so did my son. We both were feeling 70 percent better after the second dose and 100 percent better after the 3 rd dose. He went back to work the 5 th dose and they tested him again and he was negative. I tested negative as well. they came out with the report saying that the ivermectin didn’t work and everyone I know that took it was better in five days that’s everyone that I know that took it not some but all of the people I know!

Ivermectin doesn't make the pharmaceutical companies enough money or allow them to experiment with new drugs. Never before have they taken the doctors' rights to prescribe medications off label as they did with this virus. That says something (or at least it should to those who have any critical thinking skills left) about the effectiveness of certain cheaper treatments. If they weren't effective doctors would have stopped using them very quickly and without the government's intervention. If people would follow the money they'd quickly realize that if there were cheap treatments available both the pharmaceutical companies and the government (and law makers who invested in big pharma) would have lost big bucks and the ability to declare emergency powers. No vax necessary, No shutdowns necessary and no mandates allowed. They would not have been able to destroy our economy and lives nearly so efficiently and would have sustained huge financial losses themselves rather than us being the losers. Everyone I knew that tried this also got over it quickly and that includes relatives in their 70's.

my mom has ME/CFS since 20 years ago and she also got Covid a few months back but luckily had a mild case.
Ever since long covid came into the medical telescope doctors have started taking my mom's disease more seriously which I'm happy for. She used to be neglected by medical profesionals saying that ME isn't a real thing, it's just a misdiagnosis from childhood trauma and she needs "psyciatric help" even though she's been to the psycologist for 25+ years.
She's not in need of a god damn psyciatrist, she's in need of physical medical attention. We are so tired fighting "profesionals" (the quotation because none of them ever read into the illness).
It's sad when dentists show more compassion and understanding for her case more than doctors do.
Dentists always try to make her visits as mild and as free from sensory input as possible.
Doctors have her sit on a chair in a room with a running TV, lights and vending machines hours upon hours leaving her alone.
Her going to the hospital causes more damage than staying at home.
Luckily the science surrounding ME/CFS has taken a big leap since long covid became a central focus inside the medical field.

I sat down and focused on reading a couple of paragraphs at a time a couple of times a day until I finally started to improve and things got better from there.
Getting over the ringing ears was way more complicated. All I can say on that was I began working on it by noticing that the intensity would change depending when I would shift my focus. I ran across a video about a tinnitus fix that involved tapping on the back of my own head.

So many things that is easy to do I just sit and think about how exhausted I feel.
Now as of late my stomach issues are worse and the lightheadedness I had before contracting Covid is practically causing me to stumble and fall out in the street while walking!

I run a company and have to write everything down so I don’t forget things. Very frightening and frustrating. The up and down emotions aren’t too bad - but again, when exhausted everything is worse. I’m trying the Medical Medium diet. The celery juice has helped a ton. Eating sugar makes everything worse. Overall, I pray that I can beat this.

And the doctors are clueless about what to do for me. They say to give it time, but it's 7 months later and, while some things have gotten better, others have got worse.

They completed the 2 shots of Sinovac [they couldn't wait for the RNA vaccines in my country] while I waited it out and got 1 jab before catching COVID. All my friends have regular brain fog months after the clear, though it is slowly getting better. I never had it and I was able to walk around for hours and climb stairs without difficulty days after I got the legal clear to end quarantine. The only noticeable post-COVID effect I had was the loss of smell, which was blunted for months but now seems almost back to preCOVID days.
I would recommend getting yourself vaccinated just to alleviate the symptoms. Some help is better than no help. The only vaccine side effect I had was a sore arm and fatigue during 2 days -- doesn't seem like a bad deal considering I possibly dodged hospitalization and months-long brain fog.

My parents got vaccinated and still got infected, anyway. Him around the 30th of January, without symptoms until around 2 days later, while she caught it from him around February 3rd. They had moderate symptoms, my dad worse probably because he smokes, but my mother seems to be a long hauler. They got better after three weeks, but since then, she's complained of more fatigue than usual, her joints hurting more, as well as gum pain which he didn't have before. My dad had a regular checkup recently and everything was fine, but not sure about my mother's health. We have a family history of blood clots, too, so hearing this is worrisome. Since they were only recently infected and this is a new virus, nobody's sure if this has any impacts on life expectancy, or if these side-effects will shorten it. So much for the vaccines being of any use. Same with my dad's friends. All of them got their shots and still ended up getting this virus around the same time, and one of the friends infected his son at home when he was quarantining. The vaccines are effective only against the first variant, so it's up to us if we want the shot or not. I personally wouldn't, either. A lot of people ended up with the same complications (heart issues, brain fog, blood clots, etc.) from the vaccines. Might as well just skip it and take our chances.

To be honest, to me it feels like Covid here is just the boogeyman; The big evil that is blamed for a different issue.
Sleep deprivation will cause fatigue, even with it being rare.
Consistent partial sleep deprivation will increase the risk of depression and slowly start inhibiting higher functions like memory and focus (we're talking about anything beyond 3-4 days here).
Depression can cycle back and cause further sleep problems, worsening the effects.
These, over a few weeks, can spiral into increased anxiety, hindering performance, even with caffeine or other stimulants, which will worsen the depression, increase stress, which will once again cycle back to hindering sleep, which will further worsen everything else.
My recommendation would be taking a break, if you can and focus on just getting enough sleep; Even if you have to sleep at times when you would normally not do it, just go for it. If that is not feeling feasible, then try seeking someone (preferably a professional) to help you with your depression.

I was sick for a month and a half with COVID. I had a fever up to 103.5 for two weeks, and after I was a little better I definitely had memory issues.
Coming home from my first grocery store run after I was better, I had my kids come get the groceries. I was still tired from the illness so I went on the house. I had parked in someone else’s parking spot right in front of my apartment just to unload the groceries and I made a hard mental note to make sure to move the car as it would get towed if I didn’t. It wasn’t unusual for me to do this as I had always done this and then find parking after the groceries were unloaded.
Well… I COMPLETELY FORGOT. The next day I had a day planned with my girls to go do stuff together. I walked outside and couldn’t remember exactly where I parked my car. I had to brainstorm where I parked last and then I remembered I had parked in a neighbor’s spot and that’s when it dawned on me that I had been towed because I completely forgot to move the car.
That cost me $500 to get my car back. I couldn’t believe I didn’t remember to move it and I’ll never forget that expensive mistake. I wholeheartedly believe I experienced brain fog as I did have memory issues shortly after my recovery from COVID.

It may very well be temporary. In your case I would look for healthy options that would benefit the brain, like magnesium, D3, etc in case you may be deficient. Then do some mental exercises like memory card games or meditation. You would be surprised how the brain can bounce back to it's previous state.

I got COVID on April 3rd, 2020. As much as well all quarantined , my entire family at home got it . However, my dad , little sister and I got it the worst. I noticed my little sister and I have the same immunity system as my dad and my other sister like my mom. High fevers for over 2 weeks, our legs having purple spots ( apparently our blood was coagulating ), couldn’t eat or drink . My sister lips were blue and mine as well . My mom with COVID was trying to help me when she saw I was struggling to breathe and I was trembling. She called 911. I was hospitalized the most since I have asthma and ended up getting pneumonia. I was on so much medication that my liver hurt. Took me 3 months to mostly recover . I noticed since then I have brain fog, I constantly now cough, trouble breathing, lose energy quickly , random moments my heart starts beating like crazy . I also for 2 years struggled with my mental health.( having horrible thoughts to end my life) . My dad and little sister have similar symptoms after COVID . It’s crazy how this virus has ruined so many lives. My uncle wasn’t so lucky . After being intubated for a month , he passed away… I attended on zoom over 10 funerals of family and friends who passed away from COVID . I also work for a medical equipment company and that took a toll on me. Hearing that many patients passed away or their family members calling in crying to pick up the DME because their loved one died. I was so overwhelmed

Yup for me covid was so bad to the point where it triggered bad health anxiety and also had a bad panic attack from it. I wish more people would talk about this so that I could at least find some conform from it because going through this all alone isn't easy for most of us and I can completely relate to it. Maybe for me it wasn't as bad but I did however lose 3 people in the same month back in 2019 but it wasn't covid related though but still extremely depressing stuff. But man, this covid thing really took a toll on me and a lot of people.
I still to this day don't really know how to properly move on from it. I know people say things like "you should move on" but what if you can't then what are you supposed to do?
I can definitely relate to the mental health struggles and the suicidal thoughts. I'm usually good at staying hopeful but during the covid times I was having so many of those bad thoughts and honestly some days I got really scared of my own thoughts because you tell yourself that you aren't suicidal but sometimes your body doesn't know what it can do and I didn't want to be one of those people who did it just unexpectedly cuz when you feel overwhelmed from anxiety and from life in general it's hard to really have a lot of control over yourself and over your own body and so this is what I was genuinely scared of.
I don't know if you're still going through this or not but just know that you aren't alone in this, man. I feel you and I can relate to this
