    It’s been almost 3 years since I was called to donate for a patient in need. All this time later and I am so glad I stayed with it. Not only did I save someone’s life, but I got a lifelong friend as well.

      Hey I know this video is really old but if you’re still on TH-cam, I had a question. I assume by lifelong friend you mean the receiving patient. So why are some anonymous and how did you get to meet your match? Either way I want to do it, BUT I would sooo much rather get to meet who would be receiving it! Thanks!

    • @mldw172
      @mldw172 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@karalantz6520 I am for sure still on TH-cam! So you remain anonymous for the first year post-donation because they want to make sure everything goes alright, and that the patient is recovering to some degree before introducing people. My recipient wanted to meet me and vice versa so we met. He’s since passed away and I have donated to a second patient in September. I’m not sure if they will want to meet me one day, but they have written to me and expressed gratitude. Meeting up is all on a case by case basis, and I usually say this, if the recipient wants to meet, meet. They are the one who went through the ringer. I definitely think you should sign up - it is worth it.

    I donated. Didn't hurt. No long term problems. All it took was some of my time. A small price in order to save a life. All I had to do was sit in chair for two days. Thanks to the medical staffs, the volunteers who run the registration drives and everyone else involved.

    I am a mother to two kids who need me very much. I was told a week ago they found me a donor after searching millions on the register for years, but one wasn't found until a few weeks ago. At this point in time, I can't know who my donor is, but I would love to thank her for making the decision to save my life. I will be going in for my transplant the beginning of November 2019 and coming out with a cure. Whoever my donor is, God bless you for taking the time and doing this for me. One day I hope to meet my donor and thank her. She will be family for life. xxx

      On rare occasions a surgical withdrawal of bone marrow is necessary (and even that is just using a needle to extract the marrow from your hip, not opening up your body a bunch like for heart surgery or anything) but the blood draw method shown in this video is much more common. It depends on the patient's needs.

      Thank you! When I told a few people that I ordered a swab kit to be placed on Be The Match to donate bone marrow, literally everyone commented on how badly they heard the procedure hurt. Like is some pain and a little discomfort that much of an inconvenience for you that you would decide not to save someone's life? If I turn out to be a match for someone, I would be so nervous and scared but if it means I can save someone's life, then it is well worth it.

      They are 2 possibilities. You can either do it as a blood donation (they basically filter your blood and pick only stem cells) or have the same cells taken from your hip bone. Nowadays roughly 90% of donations are done through blood filtering, but some donors either request or require the hip procedure.

Even worse, she had very young children to top it off during her final hours. She was the white, 2% of patients that have bad reactions to the painkillers. She ended up completely out of her mind and attacked her own children hours before she died, she had to be transferred to a hospice facility. It was horrible so now her children last memories of her above her completely out of her mind and saying in pain, I feel very badly for them and her. . I also watched my mother die a horrendous death, so I really big people to think about that if they can prevent it in either anyway.

    It's awesome that people do this. Sadly there are alot of parents who have other kids for the sole purpose of giving existing children bone marrow. I think thats wrong. If the man said his back hurt think of how hurt a baby is after having bone marrow extracted out of them.

      I think if they had a child for that specific reason they would use the umbilical cord which wouldn't hurt anyone. As long as the parents raise that kid with as much love as other kids, it should be okay

    My jiggly butt just signed up and became a donor took 10 minutes was very easy waiting on my Q-tip swab to come in the mail. I have an a negative blood type I don't know if that means anything but I know that they really want my blood at the blood center. If you have herpes simplex 2 could you still be a donor? Not sure my friend has it and wants to know if she should sign up even though she has herpes but it's dormant she doesn't get breakouts or anything but if it saves a life I think it shouldn't matter as long as it's not a death threatening disease

      Being a negative blood type usually means you can donate to more people. An o- can give to everyone, but an o+ can only give to all positive blood types. But it also depends whether your blood type is a, b, or o.

    Uhhhh ... I didn't realize you weren't given anesthesia for this. I just got my kit today and I'm gonna send it off tomorrow but this is kinda scaring me now. I read somewhere they DID put you under. Does donating make you feel lightheaded at all? That's what I'm scared of the most, is getting faint and passing out. Does anyone also know if you can still donate if you're anemic? I'm anemic, and I've read you still can, but now I'm doubting that bc of the differing info on what I've read about the donation process.

    • @angelicazordan5538
      @angelicazordan5538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there are two different procedures to donate bone marrow. One is the one you see in the video (nowadays the most common, used in roughtly 90% of donations) that involves having your blood filtered and they keep only the stem cells they need. In order to do this kind of donation you have to take a medication that stimulates your stem cells proliferation, and it's the injections they show in the video (5 days of injection before the actual donation. The donation done this way is very similar to Plasma donation, meaning your blood has to go through a machine that filters it and keeps only what's needed. It's not exactly like a blood donation (where they just take the blood) because it takes longer - some hours I believe - but it's not invasive at all. The other way to donate (the older "traditional" one that is now falling out of use) would be going under anesthesia and have an operation where they take your stem cells directly from the bone marrow inside of a bone - usually the hip bone. This is more invesive and has more side effects so its rarely used, unless the donor requests or requires it.

      Well, you get the option to do the toilet before the donation, most people including myself don’t drink/eat much before it so it never comes to that, it’s usually a 5hr process and can last 2 days (5hrs on each day)
