    Caught my first fish on a frog yesterday.
    Used the smaller booyah pad crasher.
    I hadn't seen this video yet so I didn't know to use heavy gear.
    I used a 5' ugly stick with a Mitchel 308xe.
    This explains why I missed so many good strikes.
    I had a dozen bites but only landed one.
    Goes to show what your sharing with us less experienced anglers is legit.
    Thanks so much for the tips.

    Great video Kevin, I use just about the same gear up in Wisconsin! Here's my froggin' setup: Reel - Abu Garcia Revo SX (7.1:1), Rod - Abu Garcia Vendetta and Veritas 7'6" (Heavy Power/Fast Action), Line - Power Pro (65# Green Braid). I typically rotate between 3 frogs - Spro Bronzeye, KVD Sexy Frog, and Scumfrog. However, this summer I will be trying the River2Sea Bully Wa 65.

    Great video. I'm fairly new to bass fishing and recently discovered the joys of frog fishing. Love it. I can get into the muck and slop and heavy cover without having to worry about getting hung up. Most times. I noticed a couple weeks ago while somewhat site fishing I got a little too close to a suspended bass. But I managed not to spook it. Either that or it was just too hot for it to care :D anyway, I managed to get a really good reaction strike out of it with a KVD Sexy frog and when it bit it committed to the whole frog but I didn't set the hook hard enough or something because it surfaced and spit the frog out. It's like it bit so hard that the frog never actually moved inside its mouth. Once it bit I was only pulling on the eyelet of the hook I figured. It never actually set. I tried for another 30 minutes to get it to bite something else but it had no interest what so ever. I'm thinking that if it were hungry it would have bit something else I threw. One thing you mentioned about problematic frogs sinking and fixing them with silicone. Can you go into detail about this? Both of my KVD frogs sink occasionally. Especially if I'm trying for a slow cadence. Thanks in advance.

    I always shorten the legs, because I was getting a lot of short strikes . Where the fish would chomp down on the legs but not get enough frog in his mouth to get hooked.
    I guess we all go with what experience teaches us to do.

    Great Vid. No need to buy every color of every frog out there. Just a few colors of Booyah Pad Crasher will get the job done nicely. The hooks come already bent away from the body a bit and the only mod you might want to make is to trim a little off the rubber skirt.legs.

    Bunch of good tips for a noob like me. One question I have is on the size of frogs. What works best for you? Also do you only use hollow body's or have you had any luck with soft bait frogs?

    Using koppers and lunkerhunt, i think the lunkerhunt out fishes the kopper like crazy

  • @v8consumption
    @v8consumption 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    walking will catch way more fish. Getting a bait to move side to side in general makes the fish bite. Think of jerkbaits. A fish think its getting away when you walk it. Not only that but it also leaves the frog in the strikezone way longer. If you throw on the bank you can walk it forever in the same spot almost. The fish sees it as a struggling prey, not necessarily a frog.
    Ive cought way more now since walking the bait

    Where I live I can't get my hands on the powell's to check them out. U should do a 725 review. I can't make up my mind which one 725 or 735 but I guess with powell u can't go wrong. Why did u choose one over the other?

    I agree with you kevin. My question to you is.. would you throw a frog(popper or walker or legs) during winter near submerge trees and overhanging trees? Where i live in california, air temp is 61-64 degrees. Middle winter season. Had some coldfront move in and out. The air temp went up by 10 degrees in one week.

    Great video! I love frog fishing, its cool how it surprises the shit out of you when they hit it , even if you anticipate it you just dont know when its exactly gonna happen. It gets the blood flowing for sure after you land one not to mention they catch studs so be ready for a fight.
    I used to use 65 pound braid but switched to 50 as well cause i need the distance too. I do use a double palomar for my knot and have never broken off.
    I pretty much only use spro popping frog. I like the way the Kopper frog looks and feels but my question would be to you and everybody that has used one, do they take on water ?
    Thanks

    Great video. I have just gotten back into bass fishing since graduating college and have been using a lot of frogs. Do you need to go heavy action for the rod? I ask because I am, as I said, just getting back into this and am lacking gear, but really enjoy frog fishing. Also, is a spinning reel okay to use? I don't have a bait caster and am fairly unfamiliar with them. I have caught 3 or so 18" bass using this gear this last week, but don't know if I am hurting myself by not investing in the recommended tackle. Thank you!

    • @KevinBullington
      @KevinBullington  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ltrainer105046 as long as you're catching them, that's all that counts! The gear just helps you along the way... I prefer heavy gear because frog bass like to hang out in heavy cover and heavy gear will allow you to get those bass out.

    Dude awesome video! Quick question does braid backlash easier than monofilament? I hear a lot of people say you get wind knots with braid.

    • @Powerpickle68
      @Powerpickle68 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rslim5 No,monoo/fluro will backlash before braid because it will want to lift up off of the spool. Braid is very limp and won't develop spool memory. The only time that I have ever gotten "wind knots" was with very lite braid on a spinning reel but that was likely due to the spinning reel putting a twist on the line.

    • @chmowski
      @chmowski 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rslim5 If you loosely spool the line on the reel then it tends to backlash alot. so just put it on there nice and tight and you shouldn't have much trouble.

    I have been using a frog alot this last month and have so many more missed hook sets than fish in the kayak. I think some of it I can attribute to the softer med rod, but I think the frogs that I use are also the issue.(Usually Zoom toads or Stanley ribbit froms, with a double hook),I have never had much luck with hollow bodies, but would like to try more, what brand / one would you suggest? I fish alot of heavy or heavier cover pads. I use 50 lb power pro braid and do not rush the hooksets.

    • @FutureGamingMasters
      @FutureGamingMasters 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use the booyah pad crashes, the KVD sexy frog and the spro, they are the best in my opinion for starters.

    • @TheFishdoctor1952
      @TheFishdoctor1952 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dave Bradley Ditch the double hooks. Use the single screw in hooks . #5 for Horny Toads, #4 for Ribbits. Also Ribbits for more open water, Horny Toads for heavier cover. Hollow bodied frogs are for the heaviest of cover. Hollowed body frogs are worked slowly, the others at a faster pace.

    • @TheFishdoctor1952
      @TheFishdoctor1952 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dave Bradley It is hard to get the best hook set in a kayak as compared to a bass boat deck. May be part of the reason for low hook ups.

      That's okay for smaller frogs (because the larger frogs need a rod with a stronger backbone to set the hooks) in sparse cover or open water. Like really thin stuff. If it's thick slop or lily pads, I would think twice. Try the Spro Bronzeye Popper Jr. or the smaller sized Booyah Pad Crashers.

    When I'm fishing with frogs it gets pretty intense. When I'm fishing with frogs I just have a hard time trusting what they're going to do? You know how your fishing with frogs and they look up at you with those little bubbly eyes and they blow that big giant bubble with their chin neck then the only thing they have to say is 'ribbit'. I mean wtf if I'm going to take you fishing frog you need to be a better conversationalist. I don't trust a guy with no shoulders either!!
