  • In this video, I talk about living a life with schizophrenia. Living in Japan with schizophrenia is not simple despite there are high-quality medical systems in Japan. I share topics about social conformity in Japan both online and in real life.

I think that the biggest problem is that people do not have understanding of mental disabilties. When it comes to schizophrenia mostly the public hear about it in connection with some crimes. Reason for me to join your channel was exact that reason that I wanted to learn more (dont know anyone with schizophrenia). So thank you for sharing. It is good to have clear understanding of your situation and to work on improving it. Cheers

In this video you call yourself a cold person a lot, but it sounds like you understand how people can feel isolated by others and you do your best to help other people. To me it doesn't seem like you're a cold person, you're just not able to do as much for others as you'd like. Thank you for speaking about your experiences and letting other people see what life is like for you.

ありがとうございます. i'm living with schizophrenia in USA. i'm really interested in how schizophrenia is handled and viewed in other countries. it sounds hard to live in Japan with schizophrenia. i face some of the same issues with employment. i'm also a writer!
but i hope to see more videos from you in the future!

I think things are the same here in the UK. People with complex mental health problems are mainly invisible and it's impossible to get a job. I find many British people to be cold and uncaring too. Including my own family. I feel like my sister looks down on me for having a personality disorder (BPD). There is still a lot of stigma against people with BPD especially among the medical profession and you can be treated really badly. There are a lot of myths going around on social media about women with BPD. I have never had problems with empathy. Thank you for your very interesting video. Really liked it.

I empathize. I have Bipolar 1 which has many symptoms in common with schizophrenia. It can be very lonely. Psychosis is uncomfortable for a lot of people unless they have experienced it. But there are people in the world who can understand people with this type of mental illness.

I don’t have schizophrenia but I have agoraphobia and anxiety that can leave me feeling lonely. It’s hard when culture plays a big part in mental health and perception of mental health…it’s sad that relying on people can become difficult but one thing that’s never let me down have to be others that suffer with some kind of mental health ‘issue’ we see each other in a way that’s so special and my heart goes out to you ❤Tip for loneliness, insects, one thing that helped me a lot was keeping slugs and snails…easy to keep and they eat the stuff you throw away anyway! If you love things like bugs and creepy crawlies, you’ll never feel lonely…there is always a friend near by. It fills your life with purpose looking after things that can’t look after themselves. Please keep writing! Keep pursuing your dreams!

I'm not sure I can quite relate (different country [Australia], different conditions [autism, ADHD]) but I can understand the difficulty of being 'othered' and feeling like nobody cares. It's hard, most people do not and likely will not understand you, but it's good to try and find some form of community - I think what you're doing here on TH-cam is a good way to do that. I'm glad you poppped up in my recommendations, I really enjoy getting a glimpse into life in other parts of the world.

I have schizophrenia and live in the north of Ireland. Things can be very difficult for people with severe psychiatric disabilities here because the government massively underfunds mental health services and as a result there is long wait times for psychiatrists and psychologists and very few psychiatric hospitals which tend to have less than 30 beds each. Our medication is free because it is paid for by the health service and we receive disability payments but the government is trying to reduce the amount of money we receive currently. I have been unemployed for three years as employers will not hire you if you have mental illness and long gaps in employment as I do. People in Ireland are more welcoming to people in hardship than Japanese people I think but there is still a stigma around being schizophrenic also. People are fearful of schizophrenics because of negative media portrayals but also because we are outside the norm.

Hi Yutaka! I’m about 7 minutes into your video and really share some of your thoughts about not doing enough for others; I always want to help more and have an internal calling to help others and feel empathetic for them enough to help! I believe that one of the societal issues we face is that we sometimes feel like we do not do “enough” and should help “more” but, remember that your effort is still valuable as you are also a valuable person. So it is important for us to find a balance between what we expected to be able to do (help donation with 10 dollars) and what we are capable of helping with with (help donation of only 2 dollars).
If 2 dollars is a lot of money for me because I am in difficult circumstances, then my 2 dollar help, donation or assistance is equally worthy as a millionaire who gave 2 thousand dollars

    Thank you very much!
Since I found your channel yesterday (thanks to TH-cam's suggestion algorithm 👍), I've been wondering about this very specific topic, so your video comes at the right moment! 👏🙂
I know very little about Japan and the Japanese culture and sub-cultures, but the overall feeling that I have (via the Internet, movies, TV shows/animes) is that life in Japan seems to be very rigorous and competitive - especially in professional context. It's good to see that you are working hard - and your English is very good and improving! 👏
As for coldness and disinterest: I think that it's more or less true for many people in the world, regarding poverty, mental health, etc. Everyone struggles in their own way, on different levels, I guess... I really think that coldness and disinterest have their roots in the more or less conscious inability to cope when facing unknown/unexpected situations or contexts, and the fear of being clumsy (or worse: being seen as clumsy and clueless)
Oh and mean, rude, and offensive online behaviours can really be from EVERYWHERE in the world, unfortunately... Please don't ever let bad comments, if if ever happens to you, undermine your morale and motivation, they are not worth worrying about ✊🙂
Keep up the good work! 😎

I am from America with schizophrenia, people here are friendly but only on the surface but when you start talking about symptoms and how they affect you it’s also cold and uninterested since it’s happening constantly. There is also a great divide in acceptance for anxiety and depression vs more complex disorders. Jobs are way easier since discrimination laws but holding a job longer than a year is near impossible for me usually down the line, there is a nice amount of government assistance if you know about it but a lot of people who suffer similar aren’t educated in it or cant get themselves out of the house to actively keep up with it since you constantly have to make appointments and remember when to do phone calls. I have been on a journey to live with my disorders instead of medical route but only after careful consultation with my health group and a wonder support system I wouldn’t trade in the world. We are all still people at the end of the day who want to connect and be understood.

I live in eastern europe, one of the post communist countries. Older people keep saying that we used to be less cold, less selfish, less ignorant to others' needs. I'm too young to remember those old times, but your video reminds me of those stories. I would love to live in more caring, community-focused times. Best I can do is focus on the few communities I can engage with that provide me a sense of belonging and hope that my actions also help others in those communities feel the same.

Never been in Japan. Only watched Movies, Anime etc. It does seem like a very cold society, toxic work culture, loneliness, etc. It's not "much" better in the west but it is better in some ways. But it is generally the same. They talk big about "mental health" but when it comes to employment, if you mention anything, you wont get hired. If they find out you had anxiety or depression they'll use it against you. Its the reality of this new modern-age capitalistic world where psychopaths are employed in HR offices with management who downright abuse their workers. They want someone healthy enough to get emotionally abused and who will tolerate it without having a breakdown then quitting their highly toxic job environment. Its not only like that in Japan. Although, I do find Japanese people seem very cold and have difficulty opening themselves to others, it is indeed perhaps due to their old outdated "patriarchal" customs. As an outside observer, it does seem to lend itself to very isolated and toxic society. All I can say is, If you think it's not right, then you dont become another cold individual in japan. You become the 1 different person. In the bible, you are taught to become a warmer person and to not allow yourself to be one of them(since you are a believer I saw in your previous video). Be warm and kind to people. Instead of joining the evil ways of the world.
