The Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu, of which Seki Sensei is the 22nd headmaster, was one of the most popular Ryuha styles during the Edo period. In our golden age, we had over 7,000 students nationwide. Today, we only have 100 students. Our dream is to revive the golden age of Asayama Ichiden Ryu while Seki Sensei is still the headmaster. We want future generations to remember Seki Sensei as the legendary Sōké who brought back the glory of our Ryuha. Your donations will be used to cover Shogo's travel expenses to visit the main dojo from Kyoto, TH-cam video shooting costs, online lesson operation costs, and training camps in Japan and overseas.

I am very happy you mentioned this people of today tend to not honor the old way as much. Thank you both for your enormous contribution to traditional japanese swordsmanship godbless and good health.
Gotta respect the roots. Makes sense to me.
It's so important that even though you THINK you know enough that you can do a demonstration you have to SHOW that you know and be able to demonstrate that you have the CHARACTER. Otherwise you're just stealing.
It is sad that this happened. I think getting permission for something like this is not only a part of Japanese culture and Budo tradition. It is common sense.
thank you sensei
I don’t see any problem to talk about this, they are both talking about anyone in particular neither referring the names of the students that make the mistake. Much less calling them thiefs. But one of them took this video very personally in his facebook page and makes no sense attacking Shogo for informing us of one of the taboos of all Ryhua styles.
Hi Shogo, Seki Sensei, and everyone. As a lawyer in the UK, I find this very interesting as I have represented individuals for similar cases. Was it very specifically the style they were demonstrating and claiming they had permission to perform?
The master to disciple dynamic is very important. While most practice martial arts for other reasons outside of combat. The reality is that the purpose of martial arts is for combat, and maintaining the control of who learns it is a matter of safety to the general public.
I personally am very selective of who I teach karate to the point majority of people don’t follow through on it. Maybe I should be softer on people like Seki Sensei, and just accept potential students who have good intentions. Allowing them to learn the spirit of the art over time…
Anyways, I’m very glade y’all are maintaining this level of discipline. We need more of the in the martial arts world in general.
I really appreciate this is more about strongly constructively informing in an encouraging way rather than just warning.
I am confused by what you mean by “performing “ the enbu. Do you mean they performed it as a show or to teach someone, without permission?
So am i getting it correct that practicing a technique without claiming it is a specific technique and with no teaching of other people would not be a problem?
Practicing the techniques is fine, demonstrating it to others without the proper training is not.
One issue that can arise from crediting a master without character is that he then has no interest other than personality worship, and then promotes or demotes based on this goal alone, leading to quick corruption of the art.
This is the way to preserve a tradition such as this. Makes great sense.
When training in traditional martial arts like kenjutsu, it's important to remember that respect and etiquette are crucial. Even though you paid for the classes, the techniques and knowledge are considered the intellectual property of the instructor and the dojo. Performing a public demonstration without asking permission can be seen as disrespectful. It’s essential to communicate with your instructor, as they may have specific guidelines or concerns about how their teachings are represented. Always seek to respect the traditions and maintain a good relationship with your instructor.
