A lot of traditional Japanese items were made from Bamboo due to its abundance and sturdiness. From weapons, to armor, buildings, plates, etc. Bamboo was used to make a lot of stuff like how Europe used wood
From the process of making the bows to the ceremony and tradition of using them, this is a beautiful art. Such skill is required at each step, including the slow smoking process. Thank you for sharing! Your videos are relaxing even when they have large machines working, but this video was like 13 minutes of peaceful meditation!
I absolutely love japanese craftmanship. Honor and pride to make the absolute best quality. I hope that I will be able to visit Japan at least once in my lifetime.
Watching these gentlemen make this bow , they make it look so easy and simple. But I'm sure they have 1000's of hours training and making them. What amazes me is the simple stuff the get from the outdoors, I'd say 99% if it came from the woods when they started making them hundreds of years ago. And just think of the people that figured out how to make them in the beginning, just like with the Japanese swords, those people were just smart. That's about all I can say about them. Very well done gentlemen, very well done. Semper Fi from an old Marine
This woodworking is absolutely brilliant - I love the special bench he has for planing the staves, and how he ties them together and creates pressure by driving in the wedges. It would be amazing to spend even a day learning from a bowyer like him. But maybe I can try some of these ideas for clamping in my own work
To be fair a lot of these traditional method are more about cultural preservation than anything else. It's like those samruai sword makers. They're using bloomery steel to make swords because it's to preserve their history. It's a bit like civil war reenactment.
Mind blowing. This long bow need to be accelerated with full energy. Not easy to control. Be patient to learn about it and most of all disciplines in Japanese Culture.🇯🇵👍🏽🇯🇵
As a kid I used to make bows from split bamboo as well, but they tended to crack over its length. Now I see where I made some fundamental mistakes, so thanks! It would be fantastic to know the approximate width of the core and edge strips. ❤
Right now I am training so I can move to Japan and get a job doing American dubs for Anime. Once I have Japanese citizenship (and a wife) I am definitely buying one of these.
I have always loved and respected the quiet discipline and dedication to craftsmanship of the Japanese. Their work and worldview are an inspiration to us all!
To watch a master craftsman work is absolutely amazing. Whether it’s wood carving or knife making, from any part of our world. A true craftsman is a person of great skill and dedication to the craft. USA 🇺🇸
Such a beautiful video. To watch such a timeless art, from the creation of the instrument by such skilled hands to seeing how well it works is very impressive. Thank you very much for sharing!
Excellent video. I also make traditional bows, especially horn composites. Your wrapping, wedges method is also very good for gluing horn bellies to the core.
Interesting trivia since I made a living for a long time of old and ancient woodworking tools = Japan is one of the very few cultures of the planet who shave and cut wood by hand on reverse pull stoke. Not push. I've bought some variety of traditional Japanese handheld wood working tools over the years and they work really well once you get used to them.

I love Japanese craftsman they take pride and then work the art.
Meant to say, they take pride in their art and work
The technique he used to give the bending shape was amazing. Excellent production quality as always. Happy New Year PX team!
