Got something you could try.... When you go to change the oil filters... take a nail and poke a hole in the top of the filter. I had a Porsche 911 back 20 some years ago, and the oil filter were located external to the engine and sideways inside the engine compartment. Most owners and shops simply piled rage / towels up and cleaned up the mess. What I discovered was poking a hole in the filter allowed air to get into it, when I drained the crankcase and reserve oil tank, it sucked enough oil out of the filter that I did not spill a drop.
Been there with my 911, and similar situation on the piston airplane engine, and surprised he doesn't know about that. Good you mentioned that trick to him.
unless there is a valve or some clog - that filter should drain completely in a few minutes - I have seen them on an old Rambler, like that- It was the cleanest filter removal I had ever seen.
Glenn Wright yes! I saw a mechanic do this with a hammer and a nail, and the oil drained out of the filter before he removed it. That seemed to work well.
Hi David; Thanks for the comment. You are absolutely correct. Can't have to many filters. What I should have said is that because the primary filters are 2 micron and the secondary filters are 4 micron (depending on the brand) , the secondary ones are not doing much except to pass clean fuel through them. Hydronic heat unit is 65,000btu, not 6,500btu. You said it yourself. It uses .45 gallon of Diesel an hour. Diesel is 137,000btu per gallon, .45 is 61,650btu.
My only issue is a boat of this size should have a proper door leading into the engine room and not an overhead hatch. That would be a deal-breaker for me. To my way of thinking, an engine room should be visited often. Especially on a larger vessel. Once a day dockside and once every watch underway. Opening the heavy hatch in the salon is a huge pain in the butt which may lead to a lackadaisical attitude when it come to engine monitoring.
Thanks for the vid. That oil filter setup is brain dead design for sure. Why not convert you engine fuel filters to glass bowl water traps seeing you already have the better fuel filter system. I run kabota powered generator's they have been running 14 years and still as new. It's all about water traps, quality oil and filters changed every 100 hours, that's what l service my aircraft at never had an issue after forty years of flying, and always open the oil filters and check for metal. Time to go totaly electric, fuel is a dead horse and we should stop flogging it. Elon Musk will have an answer soon. But even now with a small gen set as emergency I'd still go for three tonnes of Lifepo4 batteries and as many 380Ah panels with a series of Victron inverter chargers, and a couple of big electric motors. Silent running, clean, no fumes, great ballast, no fuel or fuel systems, added value to the boat, cash back for the diesel engines that will pay for their removal and a bit to spare. Heaps more room after removing the fuel tanks too.
Not air compressors to run the air conditioning-but air conditioning compressors. You're a salesman trying to sell a boat-get things accurately correct!

Just knock a small hole in the oil filter top before removal and it will aid drainage!

Only works if your filter doesn't have an anti- drain back valve.
The engine fuel filters might be redundant, but nobody ever regretted extra redundancy in their fuel filtering!

Why don't you flip the rear of engine oil filter around-just have new oil lines made. No big deal.
