  • Her TEDx talk was on ‘What makes you Kenyan?’ This question has nudged at Minahil’s mind since she was in Year 8 when it occurred to her that despite being fourth generation Kenyan, her skin color wasn’t represented on the Kenyan flag.
    Minahil is an inquisitive 15 year old who is passionate about public speaking. She is currently in Year 11 at Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    I will give you a very simple answer why Indians in Kenya do not feel Kenyan. It is because for generations, you Indians in Kenya have isolated yourselves and intermarried yourselves in Parklands, Pangani, and Ngara and have remained the minority. To be a Kenyan, you have to mingle, intermarry with locals and assimilate with the local culture. To be a Kenyan as well, you have to study under the Kenyan educational system, and to be a Kenyan, you have to view the rest of Kenyans as equals instead of pretending that Indians have something special. • @birjub9647
      @birjub9647 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Straight Indians yes that's how others (local Kenyans) sees us. There are many many reasons why Indians or indian kenyans have never intermarried with locals, For this you need to understand how us Indians are. There are Indian-Indians and there are Indian-Kenyans, talking bout the local Indian kenyans we have a strong cultural presence more than any other religion. The culture that has been passed on from one generation to another and to the next. This has been going on for hundreds of years. no matter where we have traveled to Be it food, clothes, how we live, language, religion, family, spiritual, weddings, clothes there is so much to us than just the name Indian. Cross cultural marriages do happen but with Indians its very difficult and most dont work out. Most indians live with their family (parents, uncles, grand parents) where as the African culture is different and this things don't blend. Reason why you see many whites/mzungus marrying Africans? they have many things in common and easy to adapt including religion. About speaking swahili its a national language but when ever we talk or are approached by locals people talk in English or Indians talk in their mother tongue we never get to practice. Where do we go speak Swahili to? At home its our mother tongue or English same with outside. Like i mentioned early indians have a strong cultural base so things we do when we are out what er celebrate are all cultural where does Swahili fit in? There is nothing you know. The water is deeper than you see on the surface! Before judging know us!

      @the jaramogi, The name Kenya was created by the British from East African-sounding names. Kenya was originally made up of East African tribes & the migrants are shipped there without their consent. Whether a person of any heritage born in Kenya should be considered a true Kenyan will depend on how well he/she is accepted by the whole community, not just his/her own assumption.

      Yes, I reading the comment section and realize its the same whats going on in my country. Not much difference. I am Hungarian who is born in Romania we have whole cities here with Hungarians, schools, everything . We don't consider ourselves as Romanian we hate when someone called us Romanian, when see our ID. We always say we are Hungarians after whole history lesson and explanation comes, because people don't understand or know nothing about us. To be honest of you pass the Austrian border to west, nobody knows about us. Our land attached to Romania, without questions and we stuck here. Most of the Romanian hate us, other European hate us because they said we are Romanians, which means we are cheaters, thieves and liars. I am Hungarian and if I am say I am from Romania, nobody in a whole world can match together, except Hungarians, Romanians, Slovakian and countries around Hungary where other Hungarians stuck in different countries. That's why I try to spread love and acceptance all nations and race around the world.

    We are the sum of our experience, and this child's reflection makes absolutely good sense to me. Regardless of whether you agree with her or not, doesn't make her any less Kenyan. I think she has every right to call herself one.. There are many commenting on her presentation who might judge her over her ethnicity and the history of separate existence between Kenyans of Asian descent and other communities. She didn't cause this unfortunate past. She should be assessed on her own merit. After all even so called "indigenous" Kenyans don't always get along, yet we still consider ourselves Kenyan.
