- Trailer teared open after crashing into tree - This was an accident recovery I probably won't ever forget. In theory, it's pretty simple at first glance. A driver made a turn and didn't factor in his swing, then proceeded to literally tear open his trailer and getting stuck "in" the tree. The end goal was to lift the trailer slightly then pull it away from the tree. Easy enough with a rotator, right?
That's when things get a tad complicated and require the classic Pepe's finesse. For starters, the trailer was loaded with multiple golf style carts that were headed 70 miles away to Fontana. This trailer obviously is no longer road worthy, so the company sent another trailer for the carts. Step 1 was emptying the damaged trailer. I let Alex take charge on this job in Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator.
First step was to suspended the roof so all the carts could be driven off. The next step was the easy one, where we had to lift and side winch the trailer so the driver could drive away. That's when things got awkward when a park ranger decided to hound us like it was our fault the trailer was wrapped around the tree in the first place. We were told if we do any damage, it would be "tens of thousands of dollars". I get people have to do their job, but we have to as well and it's always a hassle when you have people that want to flex their title over yours and prevent us from executing our game plan. I also took the liberty of doing a Google search, and that tree was in fact not protected.
Despite all the drama, we got the trailer free from the tree without further damaging it, got the trailer empty and the new one loaded, then towed out the bad trailer to a shop. All in all a perfect job, do you guys agree?

That tree was sick before the trailer hit it. In your footage dead leaves and small branches could be seen.
A definite sign the tree is in distress from lack of water, also the tree has been pruned wrong in the past, hence that right angled branch that 'jumped out in front of trailer". The forestry guy was no arborist, just a jumped up desk jockey with a hard on for authority. You guys done a great job and Alex should also be given a PR bonus for his diplomacy handling mr tree man. I know the tree guy was doing his job but he went at it all wrong. Introduce yourself, explain your purpose and ask about the plan. Then back away and let each professional do their part. Simple as that.

I've watched a lot of your videos and you are always extremely professional and careful.
But to be fair to the tree guy, he is also just doing his job, too. He has probably seen too many people who would rather cut the tree than work around it, so he is just letting you know it is protected and wants to be sure of your recovery plan.
In the end, the trailer is just insurance money, the tree has been there maybe 100 years and is living and growing.
Anyway, you did a great job without any further tree damage, and that's why your videos are worth watching. ✌️

I agree. Conservationists have a job to do as well, both of you could use a little more tact and less ego. He has probably never seen your channel before, and you probably didn't fully understand his position as well. Hopefully lessons learned on both sides.

Hey Pepe's towing service! Alex really had a professional response to the forest service guy who came to try and save Pepe's from a potential expensive fine if the tree was damaged further during the recovery process! We didn't see when
he first approached Josh to try to explain but if he had a bad attitude the professional thing to do is ignore that and do the best job that you can. He probably didn't know of Pepe's excellent reputation for minimizing any further damage so he was just doing his job by trying to inform you guys of the trees protected status and the potential for fines. Great job Alex in maintaining a professional demeanor!
Agreed his demeanor was a bit abrasive, but in the end it's good that he was able to make them aware of potential fines.
Good reason to call Pepe's to minimize the damage to the tree. I can't imagine how much the fine would be.

I used to drive a flatbed/rollback so I was in the business. I miss it but my eyes have gone down hill. That tree hugger was looking for a scapegoat. If the tree was damaged, the driver and trailer did it. Rock on brother! We always said, be safe 🙏 Drivers need to move over and slow down, but they don't and won't. I worked for a fairly large company around Atlanta. Your scenario is much worse. I was born in California, Castro Valley, Alameda County. I was 3 when we moved, so I don't have any memories. Again, be safe brother 🙏 peace ✌️I was born in 1964. You guys are also very smart to document all your work for insurance purposes. I never damaged any vehicle. The company I worked for would take it out of our paycheck if we had a damage claim.

In your video I seen the teee had a old wound where it was hit before. He came to you at beginning as he knew you were in charge of recovery . You explaned to him on how it was going to happen . At that point you should have asked him to stand back so he does not get hurt as equipment is moved . He was standing in the way and also under the tree, says he does not want it to all on anyone .? look at video Mr forestry and get out of way let them do their job . Thanks for posting
A friend of mine works for a large towing company in Washington state. The drivers have been videoing their tows for years. Has saved the company millions in lawsuits. Doesn’t make if it’s just a little scratch or even a rock chip on the glass.. Cover your butt from this sue happy society… 💵
California hugging the very last few actual trees they have left.. The only state that has National Forests that has no trees.. They have turned California from a beautiful state to a concrete jungle (minus the trees)…

I guess I get it, there are some trees around the Los Angeles area that have been growing for 100 years or more and some people would like to see them preserved but sometimes that isn't always possible. Great job and interesting content.

Josh, just after the last cart got unloaded, by the guy that was snarky about damaging the tree, you panned up into the mangled roof, and tree limb. You have a great video there of previous damage to the tree. There is a scar on that tree the size of a basketball!! This was not the first collision this tree has gone through!

On most heavy wreckers with three rear axles, generally the axle in front is a left axle, but on one of your wreckers, the back axle is lifted. Can you explain if there's advanage?
Tag axle. Makes tight turns easier.
The extra axle is to spread extra weight. They are rarely used so it makes sense to save the expensive tires.
How does he hit the tree and not stop before tearing the side of the trailer out? Ok we’ve all damaged or gotten too close to something but once you make contact how do you continue to let it go that far ?

Man I been in the same boat as you with that tree supervisor guy albeit mine weren’t blow hard super high speed tree operators, but I digress….. yeah he was just doing his job, but like at the same time, he came at y’all completely wrong….. I completely agree with how you handled it. Well with in your rights. Hell I would have been the same way although over here in NY there would’ve been a few more F-bombs dropped by both parties cause, well it’s NY and that’s just how we talk lol. If he had approached in a more professional manner with like a “hey guys this is who I am, this is why I’m here, and I’m just letting you know (xyz)” it probably would’ve been better for him at least in my opinion. Regardless, another great job by Alex. And your videography skills never cease to amaze me.

Great documentary for using a reciprocating saw....the right blade is 90% of the cut, So they whip out a pack of new blades....I wonder if a gear shift knob fell off are there spares stored somewhere?? Never have seen such complete attention to packing everything that might be needed.

I am guessing it's a State Protected Tree, not Federally Protected. The state of CA takes it's Oaks seriously.
I thought traffic here in Phoenix was bad, then went back home to Cali in 2012, first time I had been back since 1993.. Thought I was making good timing then got to Riverside then stop and go all the way out to the 105 (which did not exist when I had left). I remember growing up in 90's visiting family in Orange County and the 405 would be a parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. Heck even surface streets would be bad on a weekend afternoon. Now it is getting just as bad out here. Afternoon rush hour starts at 2:00 PM.

Im glad Alex was on this call! He knows.. California Tree hugger bit the bark! 45,000.00 worth of trailer got ruined by bad driving. Ughhhh. Drivers company or personal insurance has to cover the entire recovery. Dont get in the tow guys face.
When you are using two rotators on the same job, do the radio controls have the capability to be linked together so one control can operate both rotators at the same time?
