      I agree! I don't know if it was just because of the tone of the video or because Ryosuke was using his own language but he seemed more comfortable and calm in this video. I liked to see this side of him! You both are great! I hope you make more videos in Japanese!

    I think some of this is about getting older. when you're younger you like things you can't stand when you're older. as you grow, so do your tastes. And just an fyi, convenience stores have changed a bit around the country (in the USA). Boxed food and fresh food is far more common than it was 5 years ago.
    also, both of your personalities change so much when you switch languages. It makes complete sense, but it's fun to see this version of both of you.

      In the U.S., Wawa is a gift from the heavens above. Yes, they have junk food and some of the things you can order aren't the best, BUT I love how it's easy to get relatively fresh sandwiches, fruit, and salads. On my way to my university I almost always stop at Wawa and get fruit and some other things to last me through the day. Even 7-Eleven is getting a bit better with offering some less disgusting prepared food options. I hope more convenience stores start offering even more healthier options.

    • @milky_quartz
      @milky_quartz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mostly see salads and sandwiches, and pasta and that's only in fancy convenient stores.

    • @shoulung

      david zar US stores aren't up to the level of Japanese stores, but they are getting better. I'm not sure where you live, but many major chains now have full kitchens in their stores. I wouldn't call it great, but the options are steadily getting better.

      That's a good observation! I change a lot when I'm in Japan. I'm a big guy, 193 cm 95 kg. I guess I have a big "presence" too, but in Japan I speak a lot quieter and adopt a much more humble and polite attitude.

      Well, I know when I speak my second language, I'm a lot quieter as well. It's really interesting, and there are studies that show your personality changes when you speak your second language. Like me speaking English is very different than me speaking Norwegian. As well, she's probably trying to translate, and work out the grammar before she speaks. But I'm not Grace, so I can't speak for her entirely. I just know that's what goes through my head when I speak Norwegian.

    • @cloudkitt
      @cloudkitt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It could be simply that she's more shy to demonstrate her Japanese like that. But the other commenters are probably onto something as well. I always remember my Spanish teacher in high school. She was so wildly different when speaking either English or Spanish.

    • @LittleLofiStories
      @LittleLofiStories 8 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      I dont think its shyness... more like a characteristic that comes with the language (doesnt mean everyone has to "seem" shy... just for her it works). When I speak German (mother tongue) I think I speak Tomboyish... not very girly. When I speak Thai BAM I am so polite, my voice is higher and I sound "cuter". I dont do that on purpose though. Both languages are just so different in sound and grammer.

    I found your channel because my husband is visiting Japan for business for the first time, and he's a little overwhelmed by the cultural differences, even though he's worked for a Japanese company for over 25 years. This video made me laugh, because he just today discovered the convenience store food! He was really worried about being able to find something to eat. He's not a picky eater, but he doesn't speak or read Japanese. I wish we'd found your channel *before* he left! (and your husband is correct - you are both adorable!)

    When I was in Japan in -99 I was amazed of the sushi-vending-machines in the train stations. But after a girl in our company ordered what turned out to be "Crushed fried chicken feet" from a menu with the help of pictures (She thought it was meatballs), I mostly had burgers :)

    Yeah your Japanese is amazing Grace. Well done! Very interesting to see it entirely in Japanese. Glad you put subtitles, I don't understand any Japanese.

    Ahh so people mentioned Grace acts differently when talking fully in Japanese, I think so too! In fact I somehow find it a lot easier to watch (??) even though I don't speak Japanese at all :P It could be just the closeness I feel to Asian languages.
    I mean, when I speak in English, I am mostly quite polite, probably derived from the fact I used to only speak it at school (I am fluent colloquially as well). When I speak in my mother-tongue Chinese (in both Canto and Mando) the words I use are a lot more blunt and I am so much more out going (probably comfort factor again), the language is a lot more complex as well.
    Languages are cool, and it's amazing how quickly you picked up! *insert adoration eyes*

    Thanks for another awesome video! I love your guys' channel! I can't imagine Ryosuke (sp?) would have broken off the engagement, I was literally staring at my computer screen in shock, like, nooo!!! There can't be a world where you two are not together! You were made for each other!
    Also, I lived in France for a month (spoke absolutely no French) and my mom sent me to the store for laundry detergent and I came back with softener as well! The lady at the cash register kept talking to me and pointing at the bottle like she was asking me if I was sure, and I had no clue what she was saying lol So of course I bought it anyways. Oh well, lesson learned! Btw, I wish American convenience stores sold awesome food like that!!

    I took the last train once...except it really wasn't what one should expect for the last train.
    I went from Takadanobaba to Seibu Shinjuku. Everyone that was gonna take Yamanote Line or other train lines got off at Baba so it was only me on this 10 car train for the 2km trip to it's home at Seibu Shinjuku.
    Note to tourists: if you wanna take the last train, I suggest the Yamanote Line. It stops running at 1:15 pm and the trains get taken out of service at Osaki, Shinagawa, or Ikebukuro stations.

    As someone who is trying to currently learn Japanese for a career advantage, as well as my love for the culture of Japan, I am so very happy to see these full on Japanese speaking videos. It is such a pretty langsuge to me, and to see Grace so confident and natural speaking it gives me hope that with diligent practice and study I will one day be comfortable with such a daunting language :)

    This channel has been so fun to watch. My boyfriend and I are an "international" couple but I'm american and he's canadian so there's really hardly any cultural differences, at least nothing as drastic as there are between japan and america.

    I have to agree with Grace on that last one. I used to love convenience store food when I first moved to Taiwan. They have everything! Even potato salad. But then, I had to eat it too often when I didn't have time to cook and quickly became bored of it.
    You should make a video of the things you didn't like at first but now like :D

    There are a few convenience store exceptions in the USA where you can get a decent meal. I've lived in Texas which has Buc-ee's and Pennsylvania which had Wawa and Sheetz.

    Thank you for the video in Japanese! Because I'm learning Japanese I found this really fun to watch! As for your question, I've not tried purikura yet. Conbini stores food, I usually buy just onigiri if I'm in a rush. Something I used to love but not so much now?! Hm....probably sushi! I've had so much that I want to try all the other foods available now & its not my first thought anymore.
