    • @robertmaybeth3434
      @robertmaybeth3434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yet i find it ironic that every major war chopers have been deployed by a major power, in large numbers (so far there are only two, Vietnam and Afghanistan) neither side managed to achieve a victory, even though their enemy had none themselves. In theory they ought to be a complete game changer, but in fact they haven't been. All they've achieved is an increase in enemy casualties (increased loiter time vs aircraft) and a decrease in friendly KIA's (due to faster evacuation of wounded)

    • @Veldtian1

      @@martylucas8557 The Ah64 has 0 stealth capabilities. Even if it did, stealth doesn’t mean what you probably think. It’s like calling soft armor or even a plate carrier a “bulletproof vest”. There’s no such thing.

    • @StrongHarm
      @StrongHarm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vet who's seen it here. There are different kinds of stealth. The F-35 for instance, uses radar reflective angles and paint so radar can't see them until it's too late, and even if they do see them, they can't get a lock on them to shoot them. The AH-64 uses standoff distance (thus the Longbow name) and terrain masking techniques for stealth. They're not easy to shoot down because of tactics. For instance, the opening shots of Desert Storm were carried out by Apaches. They went deep into enemy territory undetected because they were flying low and putting hills and trees between them and the enemy.... then they destroyed Iraqi command and control and radar facilities. This allowed jets to join in the fun unimpeded and put some whoopass on aircraft sitting on the ground, parked vehicles like tanks, infrastructure like communications hubs, and troops... before they could even get into the fight. When an Apache can see over the trees with radar and advanced optics without exposing itself, and fire a hellfire missile from 10mi away, you're not going to have much of a chance to shoot it down.
      Concerning drones, there's a lot of stuff in movies that doesn't translate to the real world battlefield. For instance, fully autonomous combat drones are many years from reality. Remotely piloted vehicles are used for limited purposes, because all you really need to do to kill all of them at once is disrupt communications ... and that's not as difficult to do as one might think. What **is** a reality, is man-in-the-middle autonomy. For instance, an Apache Gunner will take over drone control near the objective and leverage it's sensors and weapons to clear that objective enough to fly in safely and really start the pounding. These machines are more complex and capable than most people realize, and the people who fly them are so well trained and competent that they're far more dangerous than the equipment itself... not that you'd be able to tell from Hollywood films that intentionally make us look incompetent... which I'll never understand.

By the time it all came to show the army had the A10 and AH64 doing all roles that the Commanche would take up.. so was becoming a big waste of money. Hence cancelled

    Obviously they did not know the OV-10 Bronco. Faster than a helicopter to deliver supplies and deliver firepower with 3 tons of ammunition . All of that for a fraction of the cost of a war plane. It was designed by marines, not by a commitee.

    • @michaelkottler
      @michaelkottler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The North American Rockwell OV-10 was a great aircraft indeed, excelling in its multi-role capacity including observation, close air support, and light attack from Vietnam to ODS. That being said, the OV-10 was a turboprop airplane, whereas this video is about helicopters. The OV-10 was originally developed by the USMC as part of their Light Armed Reconnaissance Program by a group of people appointed for the specific function of creating such a vehicle, the very definition of a committee. The USAF and Navy (yes, the Marines are part of the Navy yet distinct enough to deserve recognition as a separate branch) quickly became involved in the development of further OV-10 variations all of which were subject as part of the yearly defense budget to review by Congress and yes, all of this meant more committees. You seem to be making an argument to pride in the USMC's no-nonsense modus operandi and against bureaucracies in general, and your intended point is well-taken. But it's worth noting that a committee is simply people classed together and designated for a specific purpose, a meaning which has other labels like, for example, "team", (research team), "group" (development group) and so on, and therefore is not necessarily an automatic negative as that associated with other types of committees. Point being, it's not like the OV-10 was conceptualized, developed, constructed, tested and funded for mass production in a vacuum by a small group of personnel answering to no one. Rather, the process included several committees of various types working together to fully implement this outstanding aircraft.
      In any case, the often-overlooked OV-10 was a fine aircraft with a long service record both in the US armed forces and elsewhere. Outside the USA, the OV-10 saw its longest service in Columbia and according to some reports was also used successfully by independent operators as a smuggling vehicle. In conclusion, the Rockwell OV-10 in its various configurations was an outstanding (and relatively cheap) multi-role airplane with a rock-solid service record that continued to be successfully utilized, especially by the Marines, well after the development of the A-10 Warthog, a testament to its value and efficacy. Again, the OV-10 seems, at least to me, to be one of several military aircraft which is frequently overlooked in contemporary articles and videos documenting airplanes which served successfully, sustainably and for such an extended period as to deserve at least some representation and pop-culture adoration like that afforded more iconic military aircraft. So, I'm pleased that you mentioned the OV-10 Bronco, despite it being an airplane and therefore not included as part of this video mini-documentary.

    Seems to me the advantage of the helicopter in Vietnam, given the final result of that conflict for the USA, is not one of it's best selling points. One good snipper shot at it could cause havoc to all of its advantages.

    • @erdon466
      @erdon466 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sniper better hope he hits the pilot or a system that the helicopter only has one of because most helicopters have at least a backup system in case of this so they can switch to. Plus hard to hit when its on the move the snipers best shot would be when the chopper is stationary and that doesn't happen that often besides when troops are getting off and back on. They better have a heavy machine gun our armor piercing bullets especially now days. The Apache would laugh at a sniper.

    From 29:25 through 29:45 Taylor said he had flown with Skewer many times in Bosnia and Kosovo in the 90s however it's the first time I've ever fired one. That is a major problem in militaries. If you don't spend the money on training it can effect combat experience. The reason you're firing live missiles now is because newer upgraded versions are coming and without a war...an unused weapon is a useless weapon. Russian tank barrels can be fired far fewer times (compared to their American/British/French counterparts) before they have to be replaced so when they train they don't really train effectively.

      idk if the Chinese do, but I'm sure they understand the concept.
      It doesn't matter how many Aces or other face cards you have if the other guy has a hand full of spades. Sometimes, even if you play your cards well, your ace of clubs can lose to a 2 of spades (AA missiles).
      Besides that, in US history of machine mobility in warfare, the issue has been not whether the US can win the battle, but whether the operations can be won quickly enough. There is precedent to show that a country can win every battle and still lose the larger conflict.

    Comanche being cancelled is part of a pattern that hasn't been broken since WWII. This pattern is due to the necessity of civilian oversight for the military (as per our constitution). As a war vet, I can honestly say that our forefathers were smart in making sure "that dog has a leash". However, for the purpose of spending and procurement, it makes our lives very difficult. Comanche was ordered by a Rep Admin, then canceled by a Dem Admin. F-22 Aircraft: requested by Rep Admin, cancelled by Dem Admin. Seawolf Submarine: requested by Rep Admin, cancelled by Dem Admin. LCS Ship: requested by Rep Admin, cancelled by Dem Admin. The list goes on and on. The technological gap between the U.S. and our enemies is slowly receding because our military is getting caught in the middle of political division. Of course some programs do survive, like the F-35 (you think the media was hard on the F-35 and almost got it cancelled, you should have seen the AH-64 procurement... it was such a mess it killed half a dozen pilots.. but it eventually became king of the hill after all that hard work). In defense of those Dem Admins that fight against defense spending, they genuinely believe they're doing the right thing. They believe that a new helicopter will rob children of their school lunches. This is simply not true. We spend 13% of our GDP on Defense, and more than 48% on social programs.
    President Donald Trump identified this pattern and attempted to break it. Whether he did is yet to be seen, but his solution was to ***preorder and prepay*** for the new superior military assets. A new Sub, Jet Fighter, Bomber, and Small Arms were all paid for at the time their procurement was requested. This means that another Seawolf or Comanche isn't going to happen. The Seawolf is to this day the most effective subsurface asset in the world, but only 3 were made because the program was cancelled. Since we already paid for the new subs, they shouldn't be able to limit it to 3 of 30 being built. Think what you will of Trump, but my Active Duty Army son will be carrying a superior Sig Sauer rifle, instead of something made by the lowest bidder. That's a big relief to the father of a soldier.
