      If you are a Navy vet you see/hear a lot of wrong information. The scenes of the ships leaving Norfolk was not filmed at Norfolk. You basically push back in to the channel and then are headed straight for open water. There is not much land around you like you see in the video. The descriptions of the flight deck float coat colors was iffy at best. Just too much bad or poor information in this.

    When I watch this documentary I get flashbacks of my service aboard the Truman with VAQ-137 "ROOKS" squadron in 2018 while we were deployed in the Mediterranean bombing the shit out of ISIS from 100 miles off the coast of Syria. Being an AM3, (Airframer), as well as being nightshift supervisor in 12 Chuck scraping corrosion off the underside of our jets before treating and painting them whilst pitching in all directions on the flight deck of a floating city being swept by high winds and sometimes rain is a nightmare. Even at night sometimes I'd have to go up there from hangar deck to paint or weatherseal something for later permanent repairs only to have it peel off when the bird was flown the next morning.
    That brings me to why I'm no longer still in the Navy: LEADERSHIP. I'm sure it's not just people who've served in the navy either since all branches of our military suffers from obviously poor leadership. Anyway, our maintenance control certainly had it's issues when it came to what should or should not be priority maintenance in regards to mission readiness. I can say even less for the carrier Harry S. Truman. It was a rather dirty ship with claustrophobic racks that were barely longer than me laying down, unbelievably shitty food like I'm talking raw chicken and half frozen potato wedges and rice...ALWAYS rice. Rice with everything! Not to mention our berthing was right under the flight deck just forward of the fantail so when the inbound aircraft were recovered the less experienced pilots slammed down onto the deck right on top of our heads which was as loud a sound as hearing and feeling a collision happen right above you. We worked 7 days a week, 12 hours on and 12 off, but many times we wound up working 14 or 15 hour shifts that overlapped with day check, so by the time we finally did get to a port I was a zombie. The average time we were at sea between port calls was 45 days. Imagine working 7 days a week, Zero off days for a solid month and a half before you finally get somewhere and you only get 4 days tops there. Oh, and one of those 4 days is a duty day that means you can't even leave the ship that day so you actually just get 3 days. 3 days to rest and unwind after working your f*cking ass off for the last 45. We did go north of the Arctic Circle and make history off the coast of Norway though. That was pretty cool getting my Blue Nose. Ultimately though, one enlistment was more than a lifetime of Navy experience for me. Stubborn and inflexible "Old Navy" chiefs and poor management from the brass convinced me that 4 years was all I wanted. I got out as a 3rd class petty officer and was all set to put on AM2 if I had reenlisted...but it's not for everyone. I'll just leave it at that.
    Yeah I definitely wouldn't do any cruise, on any carrier again lol.

    • @herrakaarme
      @herrakaarme 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard it's so fast that when they tried to measure the top speed, the first sailor ran out of the knotted line before the second sailor's 30 second sandglass had finished even the first cycle. So, it was impossible to calculate the exact top speed, as it was over the scale.
      Although some say the line was caught by the screw, but that's just nasty bad-mouthing.

    It tears my eyes to see the Wehrmacht and the USA working together as they should have done back in the days. Note: I am not from any of the two/three countries depicted in the video. Just a fan so to say.

      It's not the "Wehrmacht" anymore. Since German rearmament it's the "Bundeswehr" ("Federal Army"). Greetz from Germany.

    When the clip showing the Harry S. Truman heading out to sea from NAVSTA Norfolk starts it is from the pier there and then shows Truman leaving the Norfolk Naval Shipyard up the Elizabeth River to the Chesapeake Bay.I tend to question the rest of the videos validity.

    • @gifink
      @gifink 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never left from the shipyard, so I was wondering where that was filmed. I know from our Airwing workups on the Teddy that it definitely was not leaving the Pier at Norfolk. Thanks.
