    Edit here: I mentioned that the 20% base debuff of Vulnerable can be increased, worded it a bit odd in the video. Applying Vulnerable will always be a 20% debuff, but you can get affixes that increase the damage you deal to Vulnerable enemies, which is what I meant. Overpower is also a damage bucket, but it ADDS to your total damage after all the other buckets have been multiplied together. Overpower is only going to help you if you have an easy way to proc it reliably. Lastly, your Base Damage is your weapon DPS times your individual Skill's damage. This Base Damage is also multiplied to the buckets and where the damage calculation begins, so your weapon is very important to your overall damage output.

      So does the rest of the Vulnerable buffs fall into the 'DMG w/' bucket?

    • @hbtan9841
      @hbtan9841 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does that mean Overpower is its own separate damage bucket? Would it then make sense to focus on this?

    • @Pixelsoep
      @Pixelsoep ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hbtan9841y takeaway from this video is that you should not focus on any one bucket, but instead try to get some bonuses in all of them (or at least as many as you can).
      So yes, get some overpower going, but also go for stats in the other buckets. It seems like the way to get those insane damage numbers going.

    • @hbtan9841
      @hbtan9841 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Pixelsoep I hear your point. I guess I was wondering whether I should say, assuming I already have 50% vulnerable, should I go for +50% vulnerable or +50% overpower? Which would be more effective?

  • @soghotze

    Hey mate, very nice explanation for the overall mechanics and the dmg buckets.
    But I think your math is wrong there. If you multiply percentages you always take the whole percentage, so for 3% that is 103% overall dmg. So 1,03 in "natural numbers" (sry english is not my native language) and multiply it with the other stats. So your calculation would be 1,03 x 1,04 x 1,03 x 1,03 x 1,03 = 1,17 or 117% of your base dmg.
    If your calculation method would be correct, the dmg would be absurd with realistic numbers. Lets say the buckets would be 80% x 250% x 100% x 150% x 80%, that would mean 24 billion times the base dmg (which is almost 3k weapon dmg for me). So my average dmg would be smth. like 72 trillion. But the acutal calculation would be 1,8 x 3,5 x 2 x 2,5 x 1,8 = 56,7. Multiply that with the base dmg of 3k = 170k dmg.

    • @Jim-sl9uk
      @Jim-sl9uk ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You are correct, the math was wrong. The first example should have been 1.02 x 1.09 x 1.02 x 1.02 x 1.01 = 1.168 or 116.8% of base damage. Not much of a difference when using these small numbers, but the difference grows as the percentages get higher.
      If the example had been 20/90/20/20/10 to 30/40/30/30/30, the damage increase would go from about 360% base damage to about 400% base damage.
      (1.2 x 1.9 x 1.2 x 1.2 x 1.1 vs 1.3 x 1.4 x 1.3 x 1.3 x 1.3)

  • @Mike-eb2kn
    @Mike-eb2kn ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I had to stop the video, because your math is WAY WAY off, like, insanely off. First, I'll start with the obvious, at around 5:25 you are multiplying these numbers which is wrong, but also you multiply by 1. I'll say it again to let it sink in, you multiplied, by 1... OK so to move on, you can't simply multiply the numbers to begin with, that's not how it works, because they are % increases. If you multiply by 3, that's tripling your original number, or a 200% increase. You might be confused as to why not 300%, and this is because it's an "increase by" and not an "increase to", so you take 200% of your number, say 100, and ADD that on top of the original. So 200% of 100 is 200, add that to the base = 300.
    Now that that part is out of the way let's get into what your examples would actually come out to. And don't get me wrong, you have the right concept, you're just grossly miscalculating it. In your first example, the total is actually a 16.83% increase, NOT 72%. In your 2nd part it goes up to a 17.05% increase, NOT 324%.
    Side note, if you really want to use multiplication instead of simply adding the % (which most calculators can do and is easier). Then to calculate a 2% increase, you need to multiply by 1.02.

    I don't know if this was mentioned in the comments anywhere, but I don't see it on the spreadsheet or in the video anywhere, overpower damage is completely separate from the buckets. So the way you described is one "pool" of buckets. Overpower damage is another pool of buckets, and I believe poison damage is also another "pool" of buckets as well.
    The buckets are multiplicative, the pools are additive.

    Literally 2 simple fixes Blizzard could (should) implement to fix incinerate.
    1) Flamescar is now a staff instead of a wand. Higher yield on stats and damage.
    2) allow incinerate damage to crit and give it a bit more lucky hit% (currently 16% base compared to Blizzards 54% base). The fact it can't crit at all makes incinerate lose an entire bucket. They could also make DOT dmg share the bucket with crit instead to help.
    It's insane they're not bright enough to come with these solutions on their own.

    Wouldn’t it be easier if they used different coloured text for the affixes? That way, you would have a quick indicator of the bucket said affix falls into. Trying to remember all of these things off the bat can be quite confusing and daunting.
    I’m new to the Diablo family but I’m gradually learning things as I play such as, if an item has 4 affixes, I want three of them to be beneficial knowing that I can reroll the last one.
    This video really helped to understand as I was only speaking about stacking last night with my brother in law

    Very good explanation and video! Only part I am still wondering about is the example you used for your weapon and how it hits 4 different buckets on one piece of gear. My question is would you have to use earth skills to get the multiplicative bonus from this affix? I am currently on necro with a bone build and I’ve gotten a few items with like 40% crit damage with shadow skills but don’t use any shadow skills. Would I still want this because of the number (giving my total bucket multiplication a boost) or is it only applicable if you use the actual skill type? (Would gain no multiplication because of not using shadow skills)

    example: aspec like Retribution increase 40% (x) dmg to Stunned , its not bucket 5 , it multiply dmg to Stunned in bucket DMG+ first and additives with other in bucket DMG+

  • @thanhvu13
    @thanhvu13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Although Damage to Injured Enemies is considered in the "additive" bucket, which contains like what 10+ types in that bucket, let's say there's 10, that means if you have only 1 and no other 9 in that bucket, then you would only be getting 10% value of whatever the affix gives.
    So say if an affix says 40% to Damage to Injured Enemies, 10% of that = 4%. Despite spreading out in multiple buckets give better overall numbers, but taking up an affix slot that gives only a fraction vs a stand alone bucket that's gives the whole % of the affix doesn't seem be maxing.
    However, despite that I opted to use Damage to Injured Enemies on a couple gear pieces, and in while in th Injured Enemies condition, I was doing much more dmg and melting them...making it feel like as if it was a large multiplier, so it's confusing and goes against what I thought I understood the same as what you showed in the video. Can you help clarify this situation?

  • @hudsonps4669
    @hudsonps4669 ปีที่แล้ว

    This probably doesn’t change anything fundamentally for most people, but when buckets are multiplicative like they are in Diablo, I find useful to remind myself that the numbers are still additive… in a log scale.
    The normal scale of the game is exponential in nature, which is why your damage will go from, say, 4000 to 4,000,000.
    May seem quite dramatic, but on a log scale, the difference between these two types of damage is in fact not nearly as pronounced. Suddenly there is much less of a “wow” effect.
    But I’ll say that I personally don’t like exponential scaling in games much. When your damage goes from 4000 to 4,000,000, this begs the question: what is the amount of HP a boss or a trash mob should have?

    • @suikodin2501
      @suikodin2501 ปีที่แล้ว

      credibility goes down when you use the word exponential instead of geometric when discussing growth. exponential is a whole other level that is definitely not present in diablo.

    • @hudsonps4669
      @hudsonps4669 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@suikodin2501 lol this proves you’re stupid
      I have a PhD in Physics, but I don’t know what exponential is, okay Jan.
      Now I suppose I should try and say something for once. Suppose you have buckets, one of each with a 100% damage increase.
      Let’s say those are 8 buckets. Your damage will be multiplied by 2 ^ 8.
      8 is the *exponent*, and it is key to characterizing your damage here. Multiplication and exponentiation are intimately related - which is why when you take the log of products, it becomes additive.

    I'm sorry to say but your math off. You can't simply multiply % together to get your answer. Each % is a +%. What is that percent adding to? Well 100%. So in your first example of 2%, 9%, 2%, 2%, 1%. The math is 102% times 109% times 102% times 102% times 101%. What you type in the calculator is 1.02 * 1.09 * 1.02 * 1.02 * 1.01 which comes out to 116.82%. Which equates to a +16.82% total damage increase. In your second example with 3%, 4%, 3%, 3%, 3% the math is 1.03 * 1.04 * 1.03 * 1.03 * 1.03 = 1.1705 which is +17.05%. By moving your stats around you get +0.23% extra damage.
    Another way to quickly know your way of calculating is incorrect is if you don't add any modifers to one bucket (0%) you would get 0% as the total damage added regardless of what you add in other buckets.

    @JK-hf3tp ปีที่แล้ว +6

    wtf. 2% x 9% x 2% x 2% doesn't equal 72%. But 2x9x2x2 does. No wonder this game makes no sense. You multiple the bonuses, not your damage? So 100 base dmg isnt 100x1.02x1.09x1.02x1.02 which would make sense and be easy to follow and calculate.. instead its whole number damage multipliers added together in their buckets, multiplied together, and then reverted back to a percentage bonus? so its 100x(1+(2x9x2x2)/100)=172... wtf

      I just assumed the guy doesnt umderstand how decimal and percentage multiplication works in his example. It doesnt change the bucket concept so doesnt really matter. There is no way the game does this pseudo math internally

      yeah he clearly did the multiplication wrong. in fact in his example the first one with the big all dmg bucket is a higher % dmg increase (~18%) than the second one where it was spread out (~17%)

    • @stonythewoke9921
      @stonythewoke9921 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh no i made a mistake and used one 1.03 instead of a 1.02, so its only 16,8%, so slightly lower than the second example

    • @pastafarian7

    Your math doesn't make sense to me. In the first example of multiplying buckets, you have a 1% affix, which you use to multiply by 1, r net zero increase. A 1% increase should multiply by 1.01.

    • @justjarrod

      Correct it only applies when you crit. The damage calculation with everything totaled together is just "potential" damage. Crit stuff does not increase your base damage or anything else.

    Math is wayy off at 5:34. When percentages are multiplicative you multiple the scaling coefficient not an integer. The math should look like this
    1.02*1.09*1.02*1.02*1.01 = 1.17.
    The value you listed as a 72% dmg bonus would be a coefficient like this 1.72.

    • @justjarrod
      @justjarrod  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Overpower is also a damage bucket I found out today, but instead of it multiplying with the other buckets, it just gets added to the total once the other buckets have been multiplied. But I think an update to this video is probably needed due to more info I've gathered today, could touch on damage number colors in that as well.
