HI Dave, it's a shame the other shop didn't even want to try to troubleshoot this amp !, you did a great job!, I hope that I can remember to check out the solder connections on the circuit boards in all equipment that comes to me for repair!

some shops just dont want to work on that kind of equipement too big too old to much time just to pull it apart , thats how i got my onkyo tx-nr906 for 80 canadian$ just because the old owner had issues after some one installed 2 fans in it to cool the digital board , and after the usb port and network port was not working took me a lot of time to dig in it enough to find that some one had disconnected a simple flat cable but still took a lot of time just to find the issue fix it and put it back together a lot of screws on thoose big amp`s

@@c4shd34d30 I won't work on them for others. If given to me I will look for simple stuff but if i am digging into multiple boards I'll give it away to someone more commited to it than I am. After dealing with this crap for over 40 years I am not as motivated these days and nobody wants to pay.
That reel to reel Sony that I spent the better part of 2 days on is still sitting here bill is 200 and owner questioned why it was so much to fix. With all the testing and probing I probably spent 12 hours on it. (Also considering that just stopping and starting the tape fixed it for about 20 minutes till it faded out again ). Lots of keyboard warriors that post that they will pay or have paid hundreds to have vintage stuff repaired. Well in the 40+ years i have been doing this I haven't met one yet. Most will go to about 100 and after that they scrap. Highest repair bill I have had in the past several years was for the Samsung TV backlight repair. That was 300.00. Out of that, the backlights were 80us, which was about 110cdn, 30us shipping so 50 cdn and then fed ex billed me 47 in broker fees. So about 185 in my costs and i got 300. I made 115 and for that i got to take the tv apart twice. First time when i thought it might just be 1 open led only to discover that most were shorted and bad. I figured the owner would toss it but he insisted to fix so I had to reassemble, order parts and rip it apart a second time. I seriously doubt i will change another backlight due to the cost.

@@12voltvids I speculate that could be the answer right there why the shop didn't repair it. If you could get away with charging a 95.00 fee for only looking at it, that's easy money. They know the customer is never going to pay anything upwards of that fee for an actual repair.

That's a beast. Sell it quick while it still works! I'm also on the Yamaha mission at the moment. I just took 3 units for repair and decided to buy a load more from the classifieds here in France. Making some low ball offers because by the time you ship it in and sell it and ship it out again it's not easy to make much profit. I'll try to sell them locally but i think i already have the amplifier market saturated here. lol
One tuner amp had a strange failure after i fixed the bad 5V reg. It was all working but i had to clean the volume encoder, i stripped the front, cleaned the encoder put it back together and then no longer saw PRY voltage which should be 4.8V on the RX-V630rds, I could not understand why the microprocessor failed after i dismantled the front, it still appeared to be booting so i took a 4.8V from the perma supply to the processor and i routed it back to the standby relay input PRY. This means it's basically on permanently, probably no more remote activation. I'm going to tell my friend to unplug it when not using it. Too much of a mission to get a new micro processor as it would need programming. I was wondering if it switches in 4.8V to PRY from Vcc on the processor or if the processor has a separate 4.8V input that then is switched through to PRY, perhaps it is missing this 4.8V in so it can no longer output it although you can see it stabilise 0,05V on PRY so it is trying to do something. Already put too much time into it so it's going to stay in bypass jumper mode that i created unless i have some sort of revelation. Thinking this might have been static damage which would be my first encounter but it's a pretty old processor, v chunky. a M30622M4A

Nice re-fab Dave. I have a Yamaha amp that a customer gave me a couple years ago. It would go into safety lockout. I ran some preliminary checks . Since that time , watching plenty of your vids has increased my tech / electro knowledge and I plan to put it back on the bench and give it another whirl as a winter project. Meanwhile, the Harley is in the garage and Houston is forecast to get some near freezing temps this week. Stay safe and cozy Bro.

Congratulation with the Yamaha unit. I have a old Yamaha RX-V461 unit and i love it because of the very good sound of the amplifier. A somewhat weird thing on my Yamaha unit is that i must hold on the power button on the remote until i hear the 2 clicks in the relay too engage on the Yamaha unit to power it up, if I don't do that it's going to hung up on the 1 click in the relay and get stuck and then i must disconnect the power cord and connect it again to the unit to get it working properly. The radio on my unit got a failure some years ago and the symptom reminded my of a failed transistor, the FM radio station i listened to just faded away in white noise and i got no other radio reception on any other frequencies. But i have coupled the Yamaha unit on a internet/FM and digital radio unit so that is taken care of. The original remote got a failure on the volume up button and i searched the eBay and got one cheap there. The amplifier in the unit itself has worked flawlessly. Great video 😊👍

I'm with you on that one; the introduction of lead-free was shi- for solderability, QC and longevity/mech. strenght/resiliency. Marginally better for production staff (maybe). What was gained on health lead free was probably lost in other more aggresive chemicals/flux elsewhere. Because of good trash handling in Europe nothing was gained for environment... Lead free maybe made things better in India and Chinese trash heaps..?

Quite happy to accept the need to cut lead out of waste products wherever possible, but when taking the lead out makes stuff more likely to go to landfill prematurely in the first place you have to question the logic. At least allow its use in areas where lead-free is known to cause reliability problems.
A few remaining repairmen around here are terrible for charging for callout and then having no intention of repairing stuff, preferring to try to use it as an opportunity to sell a new one to customers. I had that with an LG washer a few years back, guy came out and told me BER (turns out it was dead transistor on control board, fixed myself), I paid up and gave him his £40 but I did so through gritted teeth (and a few choice words when he tried to sell me a £200 Zanussi for £300 with the call out charge taken off the bill), he didn't even look at the bloody thing! He even advertised no call out charge but had some excuse for that as well - I will always honour my side of the deal but that is just shady.

I'm pretty sure the lead free thing is just a scam to make an excuse to save enough lead for the billions of car batteries we have been using over the last 50 years or so.

If it was a paid repair perhaps 100. He paid 95 at the vintage audio repair shop only to be told to scrap it. They offered to recycle it for him which I think is their way of hoping he would have said keep it then they would have fixed and sold for hundreds. That is the rumour about that shop. I won't mention them or respond if anyone speculates as to which shop. Any comments that mention any shop by name will be removed so any locals that feel they should call the shop out don't do it here. You have been warned. I know what they do because i know someone that took a piece of equipment in and was told no parts were available so they told them to recycle only to have it show up for sale listed at over 1000. Before you ask, it was a customer I met at my day job. They didn't know i repaired equipment and while i was there working on their internet we got to talking about stereo gear because they had some nice pieces and I mentioned i used to run the old local shop and that I still work on stuff at home. Then the other shops name came up, fella asked me if I had heard about them and proceeded to tell me about his experience and what they did and then show me pictures of his equipment that they as he put it "stole" from him up for sale for a small fortune.
I guess if I were to sell this for a few hundred dollars the guy that gave it to me could say that about me too and call me a crook.

Have to get a remote for it though. Or if i fix the other Onkyo that blew up when a bunch of geese thought power lines looked like a good place to land.

@@12voltvids I have a RXV-1700 in-service.. never had any issues with this high output amp over 8 years.
The 'mystery' speaker output (non banana) is for Presence Channels. Chances are that speaker set has been disabled in original setup.
Yeah... you need the remote to setup many functions, aside control the thing easily (note the minimal control functions located on the Amp)
The correct remote model number is: RAV361 - WH25420EX
The remote is rather large and 'learn' programmable to control sources and TV functions. Has no less than 66 buttons, some multi functional. It uses 4x AAA cells... not the typical 2x AA or AAA cell job.
This has a green coloured LCD display ( earlier 'top shelf' models had similar remotes with orange coloured illumination) Won't be cheap to replace.
I would have replaced all of the red film Caps on that standby board. A common 'old age' fault is the unit powers up and then drops out due to such a Cap fault.

There is a higher quality 50mbit 1080 mode as well as 2260p at either 60 or 100 mbit 30 frame 4k. I don't use that as my computer takes longer to render 4k and it is unnecessary fir this work.
