They are not trying to keep up with professional hundred dollar programs, the purpose of paint is to provide a simple and easy to use editor that anyone can use. The people who really need those advanced features will use Photoshop, or even free alternatives like GIMP or Paint.NET. Some features like layers might not hurt them, but it might also make it harder for some people who don't know much about image manipulation
Paint is useful and always will be. Just that it doesn't have to load a billion things like Photoshop makes it great even for people that already use Photoshop. And its simplicity is great for anyone wanting to do something basic. So I'm glad Microsoft is putting some effort into making it real good. :)
Paint is useful in some aspects. I do use photoshop in my work but I have many times opened paint just to resize image, scale or just to check some little details. You obviously cant do much with it, and you shouldnt but it is useful since its so fast to open. If they ruin the speed aspect of the program, it will go totally useless.

Whenever I work on an artwork on paint 3d for a while, the brush I am using drags a line across the screen, and everything stops working. I cant save and I can't close the program because it always says "couldn't save, something went wrong." I can't even keep drawing. So I'm basically stuck, and the only thing I can do to close the program is to shut down my computer. I have been working on a drawing for like 30 minutes now, and the SAME EXACT thing JUST happened to me, and I never saved. Is it my fault I never saved? Yes. But if I work on a drawing for a little while, the same thing will happen WITHOUT FAIL every time. Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a way to save? Can I still save Chunky Chucky without leaving him forever?
In summary, the 3D modeling capabilities are: Primitives, External Models, and Extrusions (of flat geometry). Not to mention the ability to paint directly on the 3D object and some photo texture wrapping too.
It is a shame that MS didn't just give us a basic updated painting/image editing program that was like the old paint but with layer /mask functionality and layer styles. Would have actually been useful for those times when you don't have Photoshop or Krita/Gimp on a machine. The new paint looks very laggy and the 3d is very gimmicky, but it should be fine for young kids to noodle around in.

The only other company that did this was Livesforce (A now defunct Chinese company) that produced EasyToy and PatternImage. I want you guys to go download the demo of Easytoy and take a look at the "Anchors" and "Symmetry" functions that are on there. PLEASE put these features into Paint 3D, I cannot even begin to emphasize how important these features are for all of us!!! Also let us unwrap our creations as sewing patterns (plugin?) that's a bonus..

It will be released later this year with the upcoming version 2.8. Of course the standard Blender can be learned and used at any time, but it is not the most straight forward interface for a beginner, but there are TONS of tutes on the web! If you buy a basic Wacom tablet you will get a free, cut down version of Zbrush, called Zbrush core which is also a fantastic introduction to sculpting and painting 3d models. It is also the industry standard used in every Hollywood project and AAA game. It doesn't do animation or full rendering, but models can then be imported into Blender for further work....
Sounds cool Fracteed; I am buying my daughter a budget tablet this weekend and I'd like it to include this sort of stuff; she is only 3 and half years old but I am sure she can benefit from lots of stuff in these apps :D I will try to see if there is any Wacom tablets in my town or something similar :)

Okay so it turns out opinions are not well received on the internet these days. firstly I used the term selling point because just because an OS is free doesn't mean everyone will upgrade to it. As it can have draw backs on old machines. I know plenty of people who were offered a free upgrade from windows 7 and didn't take it. Secondly I'm not dissing Microsoft in any way, the Surface Studio was the first piece of hardware recently to actually excite me and I am and will always be a windows user at heart. thirdly, to clarify, I am typing this on my surface pro 4 running windows 10. I have been a windows insider since the original announcement of windows 10. I have windows 10 on all my devices including my Mac. But I've come to learn there are a large amount of faults with the OS. It is extremely resource intensive, eating old netbooks for breakfast (which a lot of people still use). It is much less reliable when it comes to stability and it throws privacy out of the window. This is not my opinion this is a fact. I use multiple computers with many different OS's every day and I know most of them inside and out. I'm not on any specific side and there are faults with each and every OS but seriously if Microsoft got their shit together and fixed some of the common issues, with some that were noted before the first public build was released. (look on the windows feedback app to see what I'm talking about) rather than pissing about making paint work in 3D I, and many others would consider it one of the BEST OS's out there. Until then all of my primary driver machines (that need to remain fast and reliable will still have a copy of windows 7 on the partition and will be my favourite to use). When I say 'I' that is because I'm telling you my opinion, but I will put money on the fact that I'm not the only person who has these issues, referring back to the windows feedback hub!
