Best thing you can do is IMMEDIATELY try to start it back the second it shuts off. You have to get it going before water gets all the way into the cylinders. If you hesitate at all its too late

If it died and water got in it would be fine and drain out if you didnt try to crank it because the open valve would still be open. The issue is sand and mud in the water acting like sand paper on the rings and cylinder. But where you hung it up without cranking it the majority of the water would run back out through the same valve it went in from. Still warrants a total teardown of the topend to clean the mud and sand the water pulled into the cylinder that didnt come out with the water. Just a heads up i paused at 20:30 to type this. If he doesnt clean the cylinder out before starting it up he will be changing rings and probably cylinders within a year 100% lol
