Hi sir, You have the best videos on all of youtube when it comes to Amouage. You really get it all. Not to mention the direction Amouage is/is heading towards. Love it. Keep up the great work!
So, another *Bustre from "Amouage-nouveau"... Thank you for another insightful and well described overview, Ram. I don't know if I'm even going to F with this (gimmick of a) line now...
Whats happening with the price of meat is happening with perfumery (im a butcher/manager). Back when i was coming up we cut a TON of meat every day, and it was compartively super cheap as opposed to now. Now the biz has gone from volume based to get the money off the few who can afford it. Amouage would rather have 10 people pay 1000 for a bottle than 40 people pay $250...which is already absurd. Normal people should just look for deals on vintage (and theres so much to discover) and just tune out of the "luxury" market.
Great to find your review on this one so early after Outlands. I expected your reaction, but as I mentioned yesterday your take is always valuable. I watched many of the interviews to Renaud Salmon and he made me the impression, especially with this BS of the oak barrel ageing, he has no idea what the h. he is doing. I don’t get how he made it to get hired for this job in such a brand honestly, but i came to the conclusions these niche fragrance houses are close to amateurs compared to other industries. I like Lustre but regret paying retail price for this. After getting The Moon from Rasquinet I thought his mastery may justify the pricing. The modern Amouage creations are worth just about what I pay at airport’s duty free around 40% off on retail price.
Hmm, looking for a name… We already have amberwoody for the same drone-like common pushy base (Unique’e etc), how about ambercandy for the 560-BDK-Montale opening to mid? Or biscuit binge?
By the way, it’s a cool idea to make a video on the topic - how many and what kind of vintage diamonds you can buy for the price of one new bottle of Amouage. We need a list of these guys
They have a cola scent called cola. With a coke logo. I have to find the exact name . The perfume guy featured it. Seemed interesting as the Roja enigma came to mind. Wearing it this morning. 🎉
@@mattl7424 I could not agree more. It was a couple years ago(or so);I bought a whole "sample set". Worth it to me as I am still pretty new to all this fragrance stuff. And enjoying it more and more as I learn!
You are so right, Sir Ramsey 🤓. Prices of the currently successful Niche Houses go into the Roja direction, but quality of the scents more into the PdM direction. For example the recent “…..us” releases by creed are an insult to any nose that appreciated the former Creed quality. PdM always smelt cheap. Only quality criterium they have is the thick glass of their bottle. But that is what the “new niche fragrance consumer” is asking for. Just reading the (German) Parfumo reviews, you get the impression all that matters is “longevity and Sillage”. Most people are just not able to distinguish between synthetic sh*te and real essential oils. They just believe the bullsh*t marketing and an army of influencers are selling them. Sad!
The pricing on modern niche perfume just makes no sense. I mean $450? What the actual fuck. I appreciate what you said about the poor value proposition. This week I've worn...vintage Shalimar ($40), Breath of God by Lush ($30), vintage Tabu ($7 - lol thanks Mercari!) and vintage Equipage ($100). Hey, I still have like $300 left!
The sad thing is consumers continue to buy it no matter what us enthusiasts think. Fragrance houses like Amouage are very much into the whole luxury and extravagance the same way brands like LV and YSL are with their handbags and clothing, true fashion experts know that what comes out of LV and YSL these days are pretty meh but the general population (that can afford it) absolutely loves it. The transition from Amouage being a "yuck that smells weird" house to a "OMG they're amazing now" in the eyes of the fast fashion luxury shopper is tragic...... No question Amouage are doing incredibly well financially but it's kind of sad what gets left behind as a result. Very much the fault of the consumer, pricing will be what kills them eventually but given what Dior and Guerlain have been doing with price I don't see it happening soon. Another interesting and equally disheartening point is I have heard from various people in the australian beauty space/industry who have visited Amouage for things like industry tours that the "Largest oil" tanks are for stuff like Guidance, Enclave, Purpose etc etc and "Reflection of course" (in marc gebauer's vid you can see some of the tanks and Renaud himself even mentions around the 50min mark that they don't regularly make batches of low selling stuff like Gold >:( ). In other words money (from consumers) talks and we're being screamed over
It's tough. What was a passion project now being put through the wringer to extract profits. That's my perception. It's not much to appreciate. Hard to feel gratitude. It hurts some. 💔
So much sweetness was added in this collection, it has nothing to do with Amouage. This is the kind of s*it that parfums de marley would release as an oriental modern fragrance.
Cheers Ram , disappointing yeah , kinda echoing Sebastian on this line he really wasn’t impressed to be honest and sadly he put Bertrand’s his least favorite so you got that to luck forward to ( not) . The comments say it all but the stocks as you say are low so it’s just the way the new kids on the block are heading, in a couple of years the new fan boys of Amouage will stumble upon some old classics in their old bottles and scratch their heads convinced they are seeing fakes and god forbid if the smell any the be running to the shower 🚿 like they got radiation contamination. Great videos and telling the whole sad story from the heart, have a terrific weekend buddy 💪👊🤛
I do not believe these reviews are a waste of time, the facts need to be brought to light. I took the money I recovered from selling Outlands and bought vintage 90’s Fahrenheit and Jazz still in the plastic. Crisis averted, it’s sad that 30-40 year old formulations are more engaging and enjoyable than the chemical slop they are selling for premium prices today.
Getting rid of Christopher Chong shows how much a creative director can contribute to a brand's quality. All these top perfumers can no longer show their creativity with Amouage.
You’re throwing me off Ramsey… I thought you would think this one was okay, nothing special…. but again, just like Outlands, we come to the same conclusion. I HATE the opening too…. It’s bloody awful. Dry down is very meh…. I have 5 other perfumes that dry down similarly. I don’t know what to expect when you get to Reasons. I lot of people online really diss on it saying they can’t believe it’s a Bertrand creation. I will say when I sampled it I got 4 people in one day comment positively to it… I almost never get comments(I’m not saying compliments!!!) on my fragrances. They were “normal” people though not into fragrances.
And the fact that this perfume was done by someone who is probably my favorite perfumer (Julien Rasquinet) makes it clear that the problem of Amouage has name and last name: Renaud Salmon. He is an awful creative director. No matter how good the perfumer is if the creative director is mediocre the perfumes will be mediocre too.
I agree with you ...the perfumer is just going to work off the brief the brand and creative director give them... I would say it goes even higher up the food chain than that as Amouage has purposely choosen a CD that has his mindset
Not a bad fragrance per se, but a terrible Amouage release. Coca cola and lipstick, really? That screams Dior to me. And the drydown? Generic, uninspired, safe, nothing distinctively Amouage about it. You're right, it's all starting to smell the same. Sigh.
I have to wonder why these companies hire reknowned perfumers at all, if they're just going to shackle said perfumers to the point that they end up making garbage. Lord knows Douchafor, Rasquinet, and Zarokian make art in a bottle when left to their own devices. I'll go a step further and say that Douchafor particularly should be on the perfumer's Mt. Rushmore, but this is niche knowledge and opinions to have. I would think average people's eyes glaze over when they hear perfumers' names. So if that adds no real mainstream boost to their sales as I would suspect, what's even the point of having their names associated with the product, if their signature styles of perfumery don't actually come through in or have any bearing on the finished product? I don't mean to give a (currently) corrupt brand like Amouage any ideas, but it doesn't make any business sense, let alone artful sense, to spend so much hiring perfumers to formulate scents for them, just to as I said before, shackle them.
Hello Ramsay. Thank you for your honest review sir.
