Hi Christelle, so happy to see you progressing along. When you had sickle cell, did you have to get transfusions due to low hemoglobin? Also, is your hemoglobin staying normal ever since the transplant?

Hi Alana!! Thank you so much!!
I actually did not get transfusions when I had sickle cell; I got a few transfusions as a small child, but then I had a bad reaction once, so my care team just didn't give me transfusions after that. I only got them only if my hgb was extremely low.
Immediately post-transplant, my hgb did not stay up because my body was still struggling to produce its own cells. I was getting a transfusion every few weeks. Now, my hgb has been above 9 for the past month, and last week it was 10! So my hgb is not quite yet normal, but I'm hoping it continues to increase as my body recovers.

@@christellesalomon A 10 is awesome! How low did it get before the transplant when you still had sickle cell and still did not get a transfusion?

@@alanab17 I received my "last transfusion" in July of 2020 before starting the preparation for transplant. However, part of the transplant prep includes getting exchange transfusions for 3 months in a row before starting the conditioning regimen. So technically, I received am exchange transfusion the day before I started the conditioning regimen.
      Did that answer your question?

Also, I had HbSC, which normally correlates to a higher baseline hgb! So take that into consideration if you have HbSS, things may be different.

@@christellesalomon I gotcha. Yep, I have SS. Well anyway, may God bless and continue to keep you on this wonderful journey to healing! Ttyl! 🥰
