I don't know where this dark headed guy grew up, but this song was what I saw in my life growing up! My family lived this, and this one brings me to tears because it I'd such an emotional song about true love!
He is from Alabama. But a looks like what my grandmother and grandfather went through in Oklahoma back in those in 43 a lot of America looked a lot at that time
To me this song extols that we exist on the shoulders of giants. That every generation owes a debt of gratitude to the generations before. OTOH, as the builders of our society slip farther back in time we lose the gratitude we need to keep us humble. Today so much his handed to us the we are living in the cultural decay and nihlism of the Roman ideal of "bread and circus", and have lost sight of what maintains human dignity, which is work, family and being a part of something that is bigger and more important than who we are as an individual. It should also be noted that Jamey Johnson writes and performs from the perspective of a Marine veteran and Christian, this song being a tribute to the Greatest Generation, that lived through the depression and defeated the fascist in WWll.
Thank you so much for your comment and perspective. You put it so well- “we have lost sight of what maintains human dignity.” Sad, poignant but true. And we have indeed, as you point out, also lost sight of the gratitude we owe the previous generations. Here is hoping against hope that things in our culture turn around and improve.
NO... it most definitely IS as lost as he thinks - as well as - it WAS that great. and being aware of & addressing that's not a romanticization. the nostalgia for those times & ways we may intrnally romanticized. however, full dismissal merely because of a higher sentiment toward it, is just WILD! 👀 you need a hug, bro?! sheesh.
freakin vibed with it a super lot. top notch sonic material. Really cool band, super talented, pretty eclectic 🤘Btw would love to see you react on DAMAGED by October Ends
I have a couple degrees, but I'm not a Doc. I like seeing people take a step back and looking in retrospect. We have a lot of "lack of transparency" these days. I hope you Gents find your purpose, because that is sometimes hard to find. Peace, Love!!
There's irony in the song for sure, such a great play on words. I take it as, you should have been there in real life, where instead of black and white, it would have been in color. To understand the back story, you should have been there.
I'd like to recommend for some of the same values "Something to be Proud Of" by Mongomery Gentry and for some of the more commend modern pitfalls "The High Cost Of Livin' " by Jamie Johnson.
Saying what someone else should aspire to is quite right wing and authoritarian in nature. What works for you doesn't work for others. I have people in my family with the most traditional lives you can imagine and they are completely awful people and the opposite is true for some who have chosen a completely different path. You are either a good person or you aren't.

I don't think much is owed to the 70-90's generation.
The first guy nailed it.

I live this song
I highly recommend a dive into the rabbit hole of Chris Stapleton, first one I’d recommend is his live acoustic performance of Barely Alive
Grant nailed this.

Great suggestions!! We will check those out. Thanks so much.
For your enjoyment, check out Jona and Klarisse cover of Tell Him (Streisand/Dion). Klarisse actually beat Morissette Amon in a singing competition.
Take a listen to Kenny Chesney's Don't Blink. Wow
