@@george941 England's goal was to beat NZ, that is what they trained for and we'll done to them, they accomplished what they set out to do and that is where the English people departed. Their celebrations after beating NZ said it all, they lost the WC right there and then. SA on the other hand beating Wales in that strategically brilliant game and their celebrations afterwards said it all.
South Africa was more aimed at taking on the All Black's in the final as their entire build up suggested and having NZ in the opening worked out perfectly. Jones should've taken notes as NZ won that game by getting 2 tries within 5 minutes, this before the Boks got their unique defence system up and running and we saw how devastating this was against Eng. Then following SA through their build up to the final, how they constantly improved in every game should have set alarm bells ringing for anyone who was going to face them in the final. SA was comparable to the 2009 Springboks and only NZ had any chance at beating them and a small chance at that. SA lost 1 line out ball the whole tournament against Wales!
Getting Eng in the final made it a very easy route to lifting the cup. Unfortunately for the Poms there was no way with their strategy and game plan that they had much chance. SA had already cracked their system in their last encounter and Eng kept the exact same strategy for 10 games in a row. The only difference in the final was trying it out in the second half instead of the first.
No other team improved more than the Boks throughout the tournament and this was a phenomia on its own. Every team has to admit this. Eng on the other hand, in the final, made the second least amount of metres of any team in the history of the WC dating back to 1987. South Africa, as Rassie said, had a squad capable of winning a WC not just beating NZ like Jones had prepared for. The effectiveness of Nienaber and a master tactician like Rassie proved what they set out to do. This is what Rassie suggested.
      1. Defence wins games not attack!
Your forwards need to be as fresh in the last 5 minutes as they were in the first 5 minutes. This has always been the success of the Boks.
      2. Perfect and win your set pieces!
      No comment needed here.
      3. The game is won in the last 20 minutes!
Springbok wings scored a try each in the last 20 in the final.
Both Rassie and Pollard openly said what they going to do and they said, Eng will not surprise us with anything. Its not going to be pretty but they said they were not there to play pretty rugby, they came to win There was nothing Eng could do to get around these traditional strengths.
Eddie Jones made a bad squad selection too and bringing in Ben Youngs into the squad, 1 week before the final? Their coffin was made. Eng were in dire straights while the Boks were 100% prepared for a final. Go watch how nervous the English were before the game even kicked off. Farrell was fumbling at the coin toss. I can guarantee you that, had it been NZ in the final, they too would have been ready. This was going to be the real match but thanks to Eddie, we didn't even have to play it.

What needed to be said, was said prior to this message and this message is powerful in it's simplicity. You have worked hard to be here. Do not sweat the small stuff. If you slip, take it on the chin and man up. Give your everything, even if it is not good enough. And once it is done, you will reap the benefits of your hard work and look back at an amazing journey - with a smile on your face as you gave it your all.

With this speech, he got rid of the fear of making a mistake. This is something that whole generations of Book coaches failed to do, time and time again.
How many times did we see in the past that we'd get up to the All Blacks try line, but then our players would go into their shells and no one would want to make a mistake, which caused us to lose the ball.
I hope he can keep this mentality going... he made such an excellent point with 'rather get into 120 battles and win 80, than get into 50 battles and lose only 4'.

I get the feeling, and I might be wrong, that the England management and team were very preoccupied with external things, what the other teams were doing, what the other managers were saying and doing, whereas I get the feeling that Rassie just made sure we focused on ourselves, forget what others are thinking or doing, just get our heads and hearts right.

Refusing to wear their medals was the only way they could display the realisation that they didn't stand a chance. They were just outdone in every single aspect, as if like a little dog beaten into submission, Eng could only do 1 thing in the final and that was run backwards and if you get the ball just throw it away. They were hopelessly unprepared for a physical dominating game and then watching the Eng / France game, it was clear England were light years from being anywhere near world champs.
Then in the Eng / Scot game in pure desperation England attempted to use a move or 2 from the Boks which worked so well against them, no doubt Proudfoot wiggling in there but unfortunately England's half hearted dismal attempts was just a fail after fail. After how perfectly the S Africans pulled it off, Eng displayed a calamity, it looked like a car crash before they even got the ball out. England even opted for Rassie's 6/2 split after all those newspaper reports after the WC of how such a split should be banned 🤣
Big question mark over Proudfoot after winning a WC and then scraping along with Eng now.
It seems South Africa knocked Eng back into the stone age and they still trying to figure out how to make sparks but they using clods instead of rocks. Think they got such a fright in the WC final they still running backwards. Whether the French will be fit enough to see the end of the 6 nations is another topic but Eng are going to have to pull themselves towards themselves if they want to be taken as a serious contender this year.

Jerome Garces was the worst Ref SA could have asked for because of his appalling record while officiating SA games. There was even a petition in SA to prevent him from reffing anymore games in the WC after the opening SA / NZ game.
What South Africa did and this is a sign of a good coach and if you know Rassie you'd understand, SA adapted their way of playing to suit how Garces allows the game to continue. They made what was a very negative point and turned it into their advantage. Traditionally the Boks are a very adaptable team and adjusting their play to suit the ref makes the other team whinge about him instead.
SA had him in their Wales game and again in the final and how did the Poms whine then. Point proven.

As an England fan I knew we would lose this game after 5 minutes. The Boks looked measured and controlled and played field position. For some reason, which I still don't understand, the England players made bad decisions and looked mentally flustered...throwing bad passes, letting Farrell take the ball up just outside their 22...running the ball out from behind their line. It was a good example of how important mental preparation or not can affect performance.

at 00.55, what does he say between "That's why this last week" and "you first have to play well".

    • @lzb1363

"Thats why, this last week, I've been pressing so hard for you guys to understand, that I was always the guy that never said, you are doing things to give people hope.
You first have to play well. But now you are playing well. And you give hope and now people are agreeing."
Here he is basically referencing the fact that some pundits back home have suggested, the mere act of playing, gives people hope. More specific to black players but many players from all colours and shapes, come from poor backgrounds. So he is referencing that some "hot air" pundits suggest many poor or down-and-out people's hopes, are lying on the shoulders of players just by playing.
But Rassie is saying those are hollow words. You don't just play and automatically give hope. You work hard, focus on your goal and play well, to show those folks that you not only can make it, you can make it and win in the highest stages of your life. You don't just aim to participate. You aim to do well and then have a right to say, I give real hope. Because I could scale the highest mountain successfully, I can now stand tall to know I give people hope to work as I did to achieve greatness. To not be satisfied or be bogged down with the weight of mere participation.

i will never believe rassie will go for the england job ... even he admits that he is sub-par as a coach, but as an administrator, i strongly believe he is born for it .. he knows where to focus on SA rugby as a whole, from contracts, developments and the like ... even if he pushes for SA to join Europe, im on board because i know he will monitor and take action on it closely .... europe has the number of games, but may have sketchy organizers (salary caps in England are stupid) .. just open everything up to SA players, force the locals to up their game and they will benefit from it .. let NZ die by their own sword
