    blimey! there's some 'orrible wheel flats in that lot!. I remember when the 313s were brand new and we use to go to Finsbury Park to bag 'em. was like finding gold, they looked so futuristic to my young eyes - and here we are approaching 50 years later and we are syaing goodbye. Doesn't seem real somehow... 48 years? where has the time gone? and obvs a good design.

    I actually quite like the look of these in my local Southern livery. Old electric trains are ok with me. Get rid of the fossils first and then upgrade these after. We still have a ridiculously large number of diesel trains in this country. There’s a big chance that cars will be all electric before trains. And you could have done trains almost a century ago.

      You make out that train tech hasn't made any progress since the classic claggers of yore. There's no magic wand to suddenly conjure up cost effective, reliable & efficient battery powered units with room for major cooling systems to fulfil this lofty sudden replacement dream of yours. The performance would have to be 1-1 to meet the variety of roles. Be realistic, rail current has to be constantly on and most of the electricity provided in the UK is natural gas so more often than not, electric locos are supplied by a fossil fuel.
      Not to mention impacts on commuters electrifying branch lines which rely on semi modern DMUs.
      And besides, all electric cars may well be a thing, but there's gonna be very few people driving them for the price tag & ridiculous charge times. What you reckon, pantographs & contact shoes for cars... 🙄

      @@Drankovich What he means is, what is the justification for spending money replacing electric trains with life left in them when there still isn't enough money to electrify all the diesels?

    For something so old they were really quick at accelerating. Even on third rail.

    Just two observations really. First, the sound of these units when they take off, the low-pitched hum rising gently as they speed up, is so much nicer than the piercing alien screech and whine of the newer units. And second, the look of the third-rail electric railway is so much neater and less environmentally intrusive than the forest of overhead lines.

    • @thetransporthub
      @thetransporthub  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah I much prefer the sound of the 31x and 32x units to modern stuff, and being a Southern boy its third rail all the way!

      @@thetransporthub I go back as far as the 4-EPBs, the 4-CORs and 4-CIGs etc. from way back in the 60s and 70s, and when they were green all over! They sounded like the 313s do. Lived in Hounslow in those days on the commuter line through Clapham Junction to Waterloo. Great days.

    I think I found a small difference between the 313 and the 315, the 315s have a more lower and a louder motor when accelerating, and the 313s don't. The 315s have a more motor power, I think

      southerns havent been replaced officially yet, but are covered by existing 377s thus meaning some services being shortened train length wise. Southern 313201 still survives on and is fully operational. Network Rails 313 121 also survives on too unsure if its fully operational.

      An average train is only suppose to last 35 Years. The bodies are usually designed to last up to 50 but the electrics, controls, and mechinism were only designed for 35. Compound that by the fact they were made by a company who no longer exists. Despite the fact the share parts with a few other Mark II Trains, there isn't much Mark II parts to go around and keep the 313s running. If anything scrapping this fleet (and the 315s) now gave more parts to the Southern 313s and Merseyside 507/508s which is how those variants were able to last longer. Also Southern's 313s were rebuilt at the 35 year mark so the bodies MAY make it to 50 at this rate.
