Amazing as always man, honestly some of the best FM content out there!! I cannot express how much you’ve changed the way I think about tactics in FM. Am I right in believing that everything you teach here about formational space and creating it with roles also applies to exploiting the nature space of the opponents formation and roles? For example, if I play a 4-2-3-1 against a 4-3-3, when we play in our own half, I’d approach the game believing that a deep lying playmaker sitting in their natural pocket of space would allow us to cause all sorts of problems for the opponent, right? Also, would the space between the winger and the fullback not be considered space to exploit given the winger is in an AML/R space?
Yep, exactly. A DLP would sit in that hole of the defense so you can make them the focal point of your attack. And I alluded to it in this video, but it's also why the 10 playmaking role can sometimes struggle because often an opponent will be playing a 433 (so the 10 is playing in the same position as their DM.) Changing your formations like this is a good way to get an advantage on your opponent right away. On the other hand, if your opponent is playing a 442/4411, a 4231 will mean the 10 role has plenty of room since there's no DM. thanks, and it means a lot that the videos have helped out! I hope to do a video on width; though I will say the Mustermann video he just released is a perfect explanation of how width can affect your tactic... may be a good alternate resource!
Love your videos, I'm on the brink of getting sacked but you saved me the other week also I'm curious when going into a match do you watch the full match to analyze how your team plays to make potential tweaks or do you use one of the other highlights (extended, comprehensive or key)?
In my proper saves I'm a real FM sicko, so I'll watch the entire match haha.. I'll switch to key highlights if a match gets out of hand, but I enjoy the full match for some reason. You get to see a lot of the minutae in your tactic that way, but matches/seasons do take a looooong time. I know that's not for everyone, so I think comprehensive when your first making changes is good, and then going to key once you're happy with where it's at
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Ok thanks, I've been using extended majority of the time hoping for the best with the tactics but when things go awry I want to know where the problems are so I can rectify it, but it got me thinking on how the best FM players watch their matches the whole season even leading to uncertainty on how to view the matches myself, but this advice will help me in the future, Thanks again DLP 👍
Apologies if you've answered this elsewhere, but I haven't seen it. Any thoughts on the FM orthodoxy that you can't play two playmakers? Would running a 4-2-3-1 with an AP at 10 and a Regista or DLP at one of the DMs create problems? I know the preset Tiki-Taka 4-3-3 has a midfield of an AP, RPM and DLP, but I've never liked Tiki-Taka so I haven't tried it. I've noticed you don't seem to use two playmaking roles in a tactic, but haven't heard you explicitly say that it's a bad idea, so curious. Thanks for the video as always.
Yea that's really a personal tactical preference of mine; I don't like to use two playmakers. Usually I'll have the playmaker be the focus of the tactic and having two roles that will follow the ball around (for me) can be problematic. I find that I can better use roles to supplement the tactic like you see in the videos. I will say, a lot of respected people in the FM world like to use 2+ playmakers, so it can definitely work. Like I said it's just how I like to play and setup the roles haha
Is it okay to point out that the Inside Forward and Wing Back videos aren't seen on the playlists? I'm assuming it would be on the 'Flanks' and 'Defenders' playlists respectively.
These videos are so incredibly useful to me as a new player. But I have a problem: I only have wingbacks, will they still work with the raum or will more symmetrical wings where both wingers are if/iw work better? (My wb on the right loves to play cwb and is one of the best on the team) Other solutions welcome of course if I've missed something
Thank you for the question :) When you say you only have Wing Backs, do you mean the more advanced WB position? (So they can't play in the full back position). If so, I'd put the Wing Back on the Defend duty behind the RMD. They'll sit back and provide cover, while also giving the RMD plenty of space And then on the other side, I think your CWB/IF duo would work great
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker *sorry for the very long and drawn out responds lmao* hmm not quite, they are playing in the back 4 and are natural in the fb position but they are only good at the wb/cwb/iwb player roles. So my most important players are: an IF(s) on the left an wb(a)/cwb(s) on the right (that has "get forward whenever possible") ----> this guy is the main problem, he's a very good player but clashes with the raumdeuter role (I think?) a perfect defender that really can play any role you put on him (though he likes to try long passes) An AP(s) with incredible passing skills and finally, a BWM(s) (but very capable of SV as well) so I feel like the tactic is very close to being a perfect fit to my team, but the fb on the right really does not want to play that ifb position I was thinking from top to bottom left to right: Poacher (or AF) IF(s) left , ap(s) in the middle, anything on the right wing any DM role left, BWM right WB(a) left, two CD on any role, and a CWB(su) on the right So what I'm looking for is some roles that will balance out my WB's so that defence doesn't completely suck and somebody willing to be in that spot in the middle when the AP goes chasing the ball to support the flanks which is the libero in your tactic at 10:00 (that's why I was thinking inverted winger and let the CD stay back)
I’ve been in love with the 4-2-3-1 since Rafa Benitez started to implement it with Liverpool. 08/09 especially! BWM(d)-DLP(s) Mascherano/Alonso, wow that was a perfect midfield pairing. AM(a) behind the Advanced Forward. One winger on attack and the other an inside forward in support with complementing full backs behind them.
I've been really getting into the 4231 lately... I love the 10 role (no matter how much they try to mark them out of the modern game lol) and it's so versatile
🤣🤣 i think it was a couple videos ago, but I forgot to put in a chapter 4 break/transition in. so the video went from 3 to 5. Seems like the wheels on the chapter structure have been falling off for a while now 🤣🤣
libero seems a risky posotion coming from a guy who thinks of defence first before attack in a formation, what do you think would be a alternative a ball playing defender ?
I think so; you may lose a little more possession with a BPD since they like to plays those risky passes. If you like to use a back-3 formation, I the Wide Center Back would be a more direct comparison to a Libero
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Okay, good! Been managing Norwich recently and signed some players that do well in said roles (I got Pau Sans as the False 9, I'm training Sargent as the Shadow Striker, Ouedraogo is coming next season as the B2B and Bonke Innocent is currently the BWM.)
@@penguinhat25 Ouedraogo is a beast! He should fit in nicely. If you need for scoring/attacking presence from the midfield, the B2B and CM(A) are easily interchangeable depending on what you need in match

can you tell me about how to use Deep Lying Playmaker properly. I'm confused about whether it's better to play as a double pivot or defensive midfielder on 433 or central midfielder on 433. In double pivot, who is the best tandem? and in 433 what is the midfield trio like?
They can be successful in both. With a double pivot, in the past I've liked to use either a Defensive Midfielder or a Ball Winning Midfielder. With a midfield trio, I like to use something more "industrious" (box to box, ball winning midfielder, central midfielder(s)) with a more attacking role, like the mezzala or central midfielder (a)
Won the Championship with a similar 4-2-3-1 but now in the Premier League and don’t know how to really adapt it for the increase in quality. Started well by winning 2 out of the first 3 but now feels like we’ve fallen off a cliff.
There's a huge jump from the Championship to the Premier League. One thing you could try is going to a 433; a DM role could give you a little more defensive help
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker got promoted using an Anchor - Segundo combo at DM, and could get away with a libero as well in the Championship… now I need to be a bit more solid and tone it down a bit.
hey there! I don't have a download link anywhere. But you can copy the player roles if you'd like from the video :) there's no player instructions or any opposition instructions. But it's a good suggestion to maybe get download links in the future
The Winger role is the most like the Raumdueter if you don't have a good player for it. Sometimes the Winger could even be a better fit for your tactic
With defensive midfielders, you're better defensively, but you lose some creative options (especially attacking ones). So if you want to be more attacking, try 2 CM and if you want to shift towards a defensive focus, use 2 DM
Raumdeuter works better in a tactic which leans heavily to the opposite side to allow them to use the space left behind. There's no natural space in a 4231 for the Raumdeuter to exploit.
Yep, you could argue the Winger would fit better. But I liked the Raumdeuter and his interplay with the Segundo Volante so decided to go with it (and also because I use a Winger in like all of my 4231 tactics 🤣🤣)
Not sure whether this is good or bad news haha, but I think the AF will be more towards the back end of the player roles (not that there's that many left tbh). But thanks for the suggestion! I promise it is on the way though :)
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker its gotta be the most epic role video then. 2D and 3D replays, at least 2 team analysis if not 3, 4 player profiles, and loads and loads of tactical analysis replays. Cheers, and looking forward!
Are formations with so many moving parts viable in lower leagues? I imagine that a player with low game intelligence doesn't understand what he's supposed to do when giving him a more complex role.
Roles like the Libero could/should work in the lower leagues because players that are defensive midfielders who can play in the center back position usually transition nicely into the role. But ones like the Raumdeuter you may have some more trouble with. I tried the role with a team in the English National League and it has super high variance (amazing at some points, playing with 10 at others), so your results may vary haha I believe I used a tactic similar to this with Queen's Park in the second division of Scotland (used a Libero and a Winger instead). That was a lower league team, though not to be fair it's not as low as some of the English teams.

I'm assuming it would be on the 'Flanks' and 'Defenders' playlists respectively.
well dang, thank you for pointing that out! they were for sure not in there haha. it's now fixed, thanks again!
They'll sit back and provide cover, while also giving the RMD plenty of space
And then on the other side, I think your CWB/IF duo would work great
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker *sorry for the very long and drawn out responds lmao*
hmm not quite, they are playing in the back 4 and are natural in the fb position but they are only good at the wb/cwb/iwb player roles. So my most important players are:
an IF(s) on the left
an wb(a)/cwb(s) on the right (that has "get forward whenever possible") ----> this guy is the main problem, he's a very good player but clashes with the raumdeuter role (I think?)
a perfect defender that really can play any role you put on him (though he likes to try long passes)
An AP(s) with incredible passing skills
and finally, a BWM(s) (but very capable of SV as well)
so I feel like the tactic is very close to being a perfect fit to my team, but the fb on the right really does not want to play that ifb position
I was thinking from top to bottom left to right:
Poacher (or AF)
IF(s) left , ap(s) in the middle, anything on the right wing
any DM role left, BWM right
WB(a) left, two CD on any role, and a CWB(su) on the right
So what I'm looking for is some roles that will balance out my WB's so that defence doesn't completely suck and somebody willing to be in that spot in the middle when the AP goes chasing the ball to support the flanks which is the libero in your tactic at 10:00 (that's why I was thinking inverted winger and let the CD stay back)
What camera angle did you use 10:57
It's the camera named "sideline", and it's zoomed out just a little
looks like sidelines with a medium high
I’ve been in love with the 4-2-3-1 since Rafa Benitez started to implement it with Liverpool.
08/09 especially!
BWM(d)-DLP(s) Mascherano/Alonso, wow that was a perfect midfield pairing.
AM(a) behind the Advanced Forward. One winger on attack and the other an inside forward in support with complementing full backs behind them.
I've been really getting into the 4231 lately... I love the 10 role (no matter how much they try to mark them out of the modern game lol) and it's so versatile
Appreciated if you make a well rounded, all purpose lower league tactic...
that's a great suggestion. I'll see if I can work something for a future video about focusing on a lower league tactic
Thanks a lot! Looking forward to it...
You should put that chapter 5! 😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣 i think it was a couple videos ago, but I forgot to put in a chapter 4 break/transition in. so the video went from 3 to 5. Seems like the wheels on the chapter structure have been falling off for a while now 🤣🤣
Next, please upload a video on how to eliminate space for the opponent
Great suggestion, thanks!
space
my favorite topic ❤
libero seems a risky posotion coming from a guy who thinks of defence first before attack in a formation, what do you think would be a alternative a ball playing defender ?
I think so; you may lose a little more possession with a BPD since they like to plays those risky passes. If you like to use a back-3 formation, I the Wide Center Back would be a more direct comparison to a Libero
Please can you do for a 523 formation
I've got a few different formation ideas planned for the rest of this series :)
You think the 4-2-3-1 could work with: A False 9, A Shadow Striker, A Box-to-Box And a Ball Winning Midfielder?
Definitely. I personally would use the BBM with a CM(D), but a BWM could totally work as well
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Okay, good!
I just got promoted from the Championship in my first season. My team is looking like this for now:
SK(A): Moisés Ramirez
WB(A): Sam McCallum
CD(D): José Córdoba
L(S): José Marsà
IFB: Filippo Missori
BWM(D): Either Bonke Innocent or Liam Gibbs
B2B: Assan Ouédraogo
IF(A): Abu Kamara
SS(A): Josh Sargent
RMD: Currently training Christos Tzolis to play there, might sign someone else tho
F9: Thyrys Dolan (Pau Sans is out on loan)
@@penguinhat25 Love those player roles!! The RMD is so good, glad you chose it! And you'll never see me complaining about using the Libero role 😂
So positive mentality is the best for control posession tactic?
that's been my favorite mentality to use when I'm focusing specifically on maintaining possession :)
can you tell me about how to use Deep Lying Playmaker properly.
With a midfield trio, I like to use something more "industrious" (box to box, ball winning midfielder, central midfielder(s)) with a more attacking role, like the mezzala or central midfielder (a)
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker thank you. i'll try it.
Why is your River Plate frontline roles looks so similar to that of Spaletti's Napoli...?
that's interesting!! I'll have to check out some of the Napoli stuff. thanks!
hi, is it possible to download the tactic? Thank you
hey there! I don't have a download link anywhere. But you can copy the player roles if you'd like from the video :) there's no player instructions or any opposition instructions. But it's a good suggestion to maybe get download links in the future
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker thank you :)
If i dont have a player who plays raumdauter reslly well what postion would you suggust ? An if at a ?
The Winger role is the most like the Raumdueter if you don't have a good player for it. Sometimes the Winger could even be a better fit for your tactic
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymakera winger(s) or (a)
I use regista-segundo volante and enganche-false9 in my 4 2 3 1 and it suprsingly works
mmm that's a fun combination of roles! I need to try the F9 and Enganche more, I bet you get some fun passing combinations
is better use 4231 with defensive midflefielder or central midfielder?
With defensive midfielders, you're better defensively, but you lose some creative options (especially attacking ones). So if you want to be more attacking, try 2 CM and if you want to shift towards a defensive focus, use 2 DM
can i change dm def with bwm deff/supp ?
Definitely; the BWM will work. An Anchor would fit in as well if you find the BWM chasing a little too much
this is the kinda stuff you do when you want to speedrun any% sacked
hey if we're not looking for new clubs in December we're not attacking enough lol
How about RMD change to winger role in attack?
Raumdeuter works better in a tactic which leans heavily to the opposite side to allow them to use the space left behind. There's no natural space in a 4231 for the Raumdeuter to exploit.
Yep, you could argue the Winger would fit better. But I liked the Raumdeuter and his interplay with the Segundo Volante so decided to go with it (and also because I use a Winger in like all of my 4231 tactics 🤣🤣)
advanced forward vid perchance?
Not sure whether this is good or bad news haha, but I think the AF will be more towards the back end of the player roles (not that there's that many left tbh). But thanks for the suggestion! I promise it is on the way though :)
Averagely, how may goals does the RMD scores?
I had Mo Salah score 24 goals in 38 games for me one season. An extreme player example, but they can definitely score
Could you play with an AF instead of a poacher?
Absolutely. I favor a Poacher sometimes in these types of formations, but an AF and a Poacher are interchangeable in a lot of tactics
I’ve seen enough, 10/10 (all he did was mention space)
And I counted, space was said 18 times in this video 🤣
Keep counting man 😂
18 times? Those are rookie numbers 🤣
you need to count all the words so we can get a solid "space to words" ratio; see if I'm slipping at all 🤣🤣
I would like to use the Deep Lying Playmaker role... *ahem*
You know that will be the very last role video, right?
@@Naren25 I can neither confirm nor deny the DLP will be the very last role video 😉
and I support your decision to use the DLP role as much as possible... may have to wait just a bit longer on the role video though 😁
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker its gotta be the most epic role video then. 2D and 3D replays, at least 2 team analysis if not 3, 4 player profiles, and loads and loads of tactical analysis replays. Cheers, and looking forward!
Hey i want to ask something because i see something at the background, "WHAT HAVE U DONE TO BRYCE YOUNG? WHY PANTHERS ALWAYS RUIN QB?????" thankyou
I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you... no amount of videos I make can help the team right now sadly :(
What about PF(a) amc partner? I'm using T now. Which one do i need? Creative amc or scoring focus ones like AM(a). For PF(a).
I think a playmaker could work, like your Treq or an AP. The PF will win the ball and should be able to easily find the playmaker
I tried the role with a team in the English National League and it has super high variance (amazing at some points, playing with 10 at others), so your results may vary haha
I believe I used a tactic similar to this with Queen's Park in the second division of Scotland (used a Libero and a Winger instead). That was a lower league team, though not to be fair it's not as low as some of the English teams.
Did it work for queen park? I have a save with them also@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker
@@Paddy--T33 Yep! We won promotion haha. The tactic should be in the Shadow Striker video if you're curious
