Best video I have seen. I am troubleshooting a DYI switch replacement that left the 3 way setup not working correctly. This HELPED a lot to understand and troubleshoot. Thanks for making this video.

All of my switches were working. I just replaced a 4 Way switch, so its color would match a new cover plate.
I left the other 3 switches alone. The older switch is probably 30 years old, but I followed the same wiring set up on the new switch, but it didn't work properly.
The 4 Way worked as a "main" switch. In the Up/On position, I know that these switches aren't labeled On/Off, it turned the light on, and the other witches could turn the lights On/Off.
If the 4 Way was in the Down/Off position, the other wouldn't work at all.
After some time, I was able to get the switches to work together, but now, when the light is off, all the 3 Way switches are in the Down/Off position, but the 4 Way switch as to be in the Up/On position.
Before, when "everything was off" all the switches were in the Down/Off position.
Call me OCD but this drove me bananas.
I left it this way, but as I put the switch back into the box, I turned the switch 180° and secured it into the box that way. Now, when everything is off, all the switches are down.
Honestly, what happened to me. Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving.✌🏾

It sounds to me like one of the 3 ways in the setup is wired in wrong. WIthout being able to see that, It's a hard thing to troubleshoot. They should each one of them be able to turn on/off regardless of the position of the other switches.

I just bought a new house and want to put a dimmer on a 3 way circuit. I installed it and if one switch is off the dimmer switch won’t work unless have 1 switch on. It’s not letting turn on and off from both switches .

HI... It sounds like you have the wire that's supposed to go on the black screw in the wrong place. If you haven't touched the original switch that was already working then the problem has to be in the one you just changed out. If you look inside your switch box and see which set of wires has the red and black together in the same bundle. Those are your travelers and they go on the brass screws. The one that's left over either goes to your light fixture or it has power coming from a power source. Either way, that's the one that goes on the black screw.

@ yes I called Lutron who. By the way, is amazing. I got connected to a rep, right away, and had the switch plates already removed. He hooked me up with a link that asked me to aim my phones camera at both the original switch, and the dimmer. It was as you said, the power source wire on the dimmer was on the wrong screw. I was impressed with Lutron customer service tech line. Thanks for getting back to me.

The world never needed a 4 way switch 😂😂 3 way switches however are definitely required for logical convenience…. But anymore, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc lights, fixtures and whatever you traditionally used a manual on off switch for are really not needed…

HI... In some house situations a 4 way is quite helpful... For a house with a foyer it can be helpful to have a switch in 3 differernt places... 😊
