Bilbo is Professor Fitz from The Aviator. He also did a voice in the cartoon Ratatouille.
The Lay of Leithian is an unfinished poem written by J. R. R. Tolkien in around 1925. It tells the tale of Beren and Lúthien, the story of the love of the mortal Man Beren and the immortal Elf maiden Lúthien. The poem consists of over 4200 verses. It was published after Tolkien's death in The Lays of Beleriand.

The Luthien and Beren are the names on the gravestones of Tolkien and his wife, Edith.

I’m a big LOTR rings fan but there are a few things I’m ignorant about with regards to the expanded world (will eventually read the lore books). What are the “Lays of Beleriand”?

Yes, he did, and for good reason. The eagle in question is Gwaihir the Windlord, the lord of all eagles, and he is a great friend of Gandalf’s ever since the wizard healed him after being shot down by a poison arrow.
That and Gandalf was specifically chosen to be one of the Istari by Manwë Súlimo, Gwaihir's lord and master.
Does Gandalf know all the lords of the animals lol?

Pace is better than the extended versions. The theater version won the Oscars. And no one said not to watch them. Just do the theater version first and extended later.

(Love the books and extended versions, but most movies are NOT better in their extended editions. There’s something to be said for brevity. Obviously LOTR isn’t brief in any form lol. But still.) Anyway sounds like extended was the right choice for this person! It’s just not by any means objectively better.

"Saurkraut" 😄
The books were super popular way before these movies were made, so there was also a parody book from the Harvard Lampoon called BORED OF THE RINGS. Dildo Bugger got the ring from the creature Goddam, and the ring must then be destroyed by the two bogies, Frito and Spam. The wizard Goodgulf "carried an ancient and trusty weapon, called by the elves a Browning semi-automatic".
Some people watching these movies wind up having to take notes to keep up with all the names.

Hi Dawn so glad you are reacting to these amazing films and enjoying them, Saruman is portrayed by the late great actor Christopher Lee who also played Count Dooku in the Star Wars Prequels, he's also the only actor in the trilogy who actually met J.R.R Tolkien and he actually wanted to play Gandalf but by the time these films were made he realised that he was to old so was happy to play Saruman a much less demanding role as he didn't do any horse riding or fighting, anyway looking forward to you reacting to the rest of this trilogy.

Probably his most famous role was as Count Dracula in the Hammer Horror films of the 60s. He was also Lord Summerisle in the Wickerman so he's got a great CV of playing evil roles.
I think I read somewhere that Christopher Lee was a cousin of James Bond author Ian Fleming (which might explain why Lee played a Bond villain in The Man With The Golden Gun)

There is also another connection, Ian Fleming was in SOE during the 2nd world war as was Christopher Lee who was attached there when he was an intelligence officer with the RAF. Ian Fleming was one of the people coming up with schemes, and Christopher Lee was one of the people carrying them out.

I'm so glad to see you're watching The Fellowship of the Ring, and I believe you'll really enjoy it. These movies were filmed in New Zealand, and in fact, the "The Shire" has been maintained as a tourist attraction! My cousins visited it several years ago, and they loved it!
But the author, being British, had the island of his birth in mind when he wrote it. New Zealand has been called a primitive version on the British Isles - still wild and beautiful! Isn't it wonderful that the Shire is still there to visit?

The Lord of the Rings were filmed almost entirely in New Zealand. The cast was composed of a delightful assortment of actors predominantly from Great Britain and New Zealand.

I think Dawn's reaction is going to be one of my favourites. Since I'm both a Tolkien fan and a language nerd, hearing Dawn pronouncing Mordor and Sauron with those rolling r's and sau- as sow- (female pig) really tickled my language nerd bone. From here on it'll be great. Looking forward to the other episodes. :) And the entire movie was shot in New Zealand and since New Zealand like Scotland (and the Faroes) is of volcanic origin they do kinda look alike. :)

While Scotland is beautiful, these films were all made in New Zealand and were shot back to back...1-2-3. Needless to say the people involved made one heck of a commitment and that is why they are so great.
17 years passed between when Bilbo and then Gandalf left the Shire and when Frodo and the other 3 hobbits left. Frodo was 50, Sam 38, Merry 36 and Pippin about 29. In hobbit years you're not an adult until you turn 33 so Pippin is basically a teenager.

There are still 1000 things about this trilogy that can move me to tears, but watching it again through your eyes should increase that by a factor of 10. Cue the waterworks and thank you Dawn Marie.
I had the impression that Arwen didn't control the river, specifically, so much as kind of spring a defensive trap that had been prepared long before.
In the book that’s the way it is, the Nazgûl entering the water triggers the flood. Also a male elf lord, Glorfindel, not Arwen, carries Frodo to Rivendell. Jackson, commendably, gave Arwen more to do in the movie, as she was mostly just an object of love in the book
But of course she knew of it.
In 1966 the most elegant guitar solo since Django's Minor Swing (listen to it NOW) - courtesy of Eric Clapton - hit the radiowaves like sirens sweetly singing. The song is called I Feel Free. Gandalf was on top of Orthanc, the tower located in Isengard, where Saruman, the wizard that went rogue, lives. Barad-dûr is the tower in Mordor, where Sauron, the owner of the ring, is, and where you see his eye.
spawning out of the mud is one of several visions Tolkien had for how they're created. he never did settle on one method he really liked completely.

This is all New Zealand. The cast had to stay there for nearly 2 years to film all the sequels. Between this series and the Hobbit series, Peter Jackson actually built Hobbiton, a true hobbit village in New Zealand where part of the Hobbit was filmed and is now a tourist attraction. For the first three movies, they just had a few fronts built, and a set for the interior shots.
In the book, the Hobbits did actually suggest tossing the Ring into the sea. Unfortunately, that's not a permanent solution. There's always the chance it could wash back on shore, because so long as the Ring exists Sauron will continue to be a threat no matter how many times he's defeated.
at the Council the language Gandalf speaks in is the Black Speech of Mordor & the words are from the poem of the Rings, specifically the bit that's engraved on the Ring itself: "Ash Nazg" means One Ring.
"Nazg" is part of "Nazgul."

the Eagles aren't just oversized birds, they're Emissaries of the Valar. the full name for them is the Eagles of Manwe, him being another of the Valar. when you see them you know the shit is going down & they're here to get you out of it.
YES! So glad you chose the extended versions for the LOTR Trilogy. They give crucial information that the theatrical versions do not give. This epic trilogy is arguably THE best movie trilogy ever made.

With that pendant, Arwen symbolically gave up her immortality to be with Aragorn. And if she didn't leave for the Undying Lands soon, then through her love she will literally become mortal like Aragorn, and can no longer go to the Undying Lands with her people.

Great reaction. And those were indeed midges that were feasting on them as they were walking through that swamp. In fact, the name of the swamp is the Midgewater Marshes.
The Tower bit is explained ONLY in the Unfinished Tales Book: In [manuscript] C The Black Riders arrived at the Gate of Isengard while Gandalf was still a prisoner in the tower. In this account, Saruman, in fear and despair, and perceiving the full horror of service to Mordor, resolved suddenly to yield to Gandalf, and to beg for his pardon and help. Temporizing at the Gate, he admitted that he had Gandalf within, and said that he would go and try to discover what he knew; if that were unavailing, he would deliver Gandalf up to them. Then Saruman hastened to the summit of Orthanc - and found Gandalf gone. Away south against the setting moon he saw a great Eagle flying towards Edoras.
See, the thing is he was always master of studying the enemy and even being able to think like they do to always know exactly the best ways to handle ever situation and so on, but the thing is he didn't just become the enemy, he at this time in a sense for once actually grew afraid of him, probably Sauron did what Sauron did with Finrod Felagund(Galadriel’s elder brother who by the way was very important in the legendarium) which basically widdled Saruman with various visions of the past and future until it wore him down.

Bilbo was a special Hobbit who helped Gandalf, which was why the Elves let him stay with them. As a person who withstood the influence of the Ring so well for so many years, the Elves respected him and the service that he had provided for the sake of Middle-earth.
In 2001 December, for 3 hours we were transported to a magical realm called Middle Earth...Before that it was there was no epic fantasy movie that had orcs, elves, battles and wizards in that magnitude. Lothorien was ethereal and Gladriels's speech was hauntingly beautiful to say the least. I am glad you have found the time to upload this clip so i will oblige and pay you my thoughts in kind.

That whole bunch of Hobbit mealtimes they mentioned wasn't just a joke in this movie, they are canonical in the books. Hobbits like to eat lots of meals. Now watch as "Strider" throws them some apples over his shoulder to keep them quiet, but they act like they're just raining from the sky. 😄

The Hobbit occurred before the Lord of the Rings. It shows how Bilbo got the ring and about the Dragon. Most of the outside scenes were filmed in New Zealand.
95 percent was filmed in New zealand, the shire was based on the lake district, and YES, Scotland, lol, the U.K is beautiful, i'm from Liverpool but have worked up in Oban, Fort Agustus and all around, Scotland really is Beautiful. Keep watching, this movies just get better.

Tolkien wrote lotr as a vehicle for the languages he created as Oxford Prof, pretty awesome.
I like to think that, while the ring was with Bilbo, the spirit of Sauron was so bored to death, that maybe it considered to settle down a little. Grown some pumpkins, try some Pipe.

Lovely reaction really very sweet. I have loved this epic since I was a child when it was read to me more than sixty years ago. The background lore is immense and there are many good TH-cam channels with good background information just be careful because of spoilers. I will enjoy watching this wonderful saga with you. Cheers
The giant eagles are a ancient race kinda like elves. they are almost immortal and more intelligent than any other species but they breed rarely. And consider their lives above mortal lives. Gandalf saved the king of the Eagles and so they come to his aid if he calls. That is the message he sent with the moth.

in the books they explained the white water horses in the river were an enhancement of gandalf's added to the elvish spell. like the smoke ring ship in the shire with bilbo.

Parts of New Zealand do share similarities to Scotland, so I can see why you get the vibe. The city of Dunedin in particular has strong Scottish links.
Reactions to the reaction
1. Sauron - "Sour Ron" - probably the Professor's student's nickname for him!
2. Isildur's death - the books give two versions of the event, and what we see here matches neither of them.
3. In the book Merry and Pippin were manipulated by Gandalf to become Frodo's companions, and they joined the quest separately.
4. ...Yes, that's exactly what he had in mind.
5. In the book, Frodo was rescued by Glorfindel (who's he? just guess) although (long story short) he faced down the Nazgul alone, aided by the flood which was magickally engineered by Gandalf.
6. In the book, the "council" is less like a schoolyard fight and more like a parliamentary debate,
Nobody cares. This is a movie reaction, not your personal book club, innit?

This movie came out on December 19, 2001, just one year before I was born.
On the 8th day of Christmas, one ring to rule them all! 😅
(Or 3 for the elves, 7 for the dwarves, and 9 for the men)

Geek fact: Isildur was misrepresented in the films (for time) he is actually the only character in LOTR who was a ring bearer who made the decision to willingly give the ring away and understand he could not wield it. He overcame his initial pride, he recognised his mistake and made the decision to amend this mistake. - he did not at all represent the failings of the strength of men but one of its greatest most selfless acts.
The film makes the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and the Seige of Baradur (Saurons tower in Mordor) look like it happened over a couple of days when it in fact lasted 12 years. The Siege of Barad-dûr depicted in the films lasted for Seven years, the climax being Gil Galad and Elendil fighting Sauron and while they were both killed they managed to defeat him and Isildur cut the ring from Saurons finger with the broken sword of Elendil, Narsil. Elrond was not at this event as shown in the film and Isildur did not pull a stupid leary face and say 'the ring is mine' to Elrond - the films make him look like a bit of a dick.
Elrond and Cirdan did counsel Isildur to destroy the ring and it was the wrong choice to not destroy it. This choice was not the simple selfish one shown in the film though. Isildur was one of the Faithful of Numenor, it was him that took the fruit from the tree of Nimroth and had to fight his way out and was badly injured in doing so. It is from this fruit that the white tree of Gondor was grown. Isildur was forced to flee the destruction of Númenor with his father, brother, and the few Men who remained uncorrupted (and un-human-sacrificed) on the island. Isildur had been subjected to years of watching Númenor’s decline into wicked and vile deeds (which was due in no small part to Sauron’s evil influence) and seeing his home brought to utter ruin as a direct consequence of this evil was likely deeply traumatising for him, which was likely only compounded when, having washed up on the shores of Middle-Earth and begun to rebuild, he learnt that Sauron himself had survived, when Sauron popped by after another century or so and captured Isildur’s new home, the city of Minas Ithil. Anárion, Isildur’s brother, was killed during this conflict. Then, of course, his father Elendil is killed a year later in front of Isildur and this is when he cuts the ring from Sauron.
We do not know what Elrond or Cirdan said to Elendial, but we do know they both had their own rings of power as did Galadriel which were wholly dependant on the One Ring for their power - which allowed Galadriel and Elrond to be as powerful as they were and make life in Middle Earth very much bearable for the Elves. Galadriel herself says to Frodo, '..your coming to us is like the footsteps of doom'.
When he takes the ring and destroys Sauron, its a victory but is also mixed with sadness, grief, anger and vengeance as Isildur has lost his homeland, brother, father and many of his people to Sauron and been at war for over almost two decades. To want to keep the ring when he was feeling like this and take it as 'were-gild for his father’s and brothers death' and the ring would have started exploiting these emotions immediately.
Isildur didn't go to the cracks of doom and then not throw the ring in the fire as Elrond shouted at him to do so, they had a battlefield discussion about what to do. Isildur was not overtake by the power of the ring and the 'strength of Men' did not fail and Elrond did not say this, it was something made up for the films.
Instead what happened is Isildur stays in the South in Minas Tiriph restoring the kingdom after the war and repairing the damage. He has inherited the Kingship of both Arnor and Gondor but he gives rulership of Gondor to his nephew Meneldil, he is not lusting after more power and dominance. At the end of this year he realises the One Ring is too powerful and it is a corruptive force and decides he cannot keep it - which is impressive in itself. In fact when Isildur is attacked and killed by Orcs he is travelling to Rivendell as the first stop on his journey home to Arnor with the specific intention of giving it to the keepers of the other Elven rings of power Galadriel, Elrond and Cirdan.
In The Book Of Unfinished Tales,
in the chapter 'The Disaster Of the Gladden Fields' Tolkien writes that the Orcs were badly beating Isildur and his men, his son asked him to use the ring to help him but Isildur replied: 'Alas, it is not, senya. I cannot use it. I dread the pain of touching it. And I have not yet found the strength to bend it to my will. It needs one greater than I now know myself to be. My pride has fallen. It should go to the Keepers of the Three.'

I grew up with these books and no attempt to make it into a movie worked until this one. I saw this with my brother and then wife, who both also grew up with the books, and it worked for all of us. I will say that the rest of the movies don't work as well, but are still fun. THIS movie is superbly done. The moment the Balrog appeared sealed the deal for me.
I will note that in the books Sauron, the wizards (originally 5), and the balrogs were all the same thing: demigods called the Maia. So when Gandalf faces the balrog he knows it is of equal power to him.

Well, Arwen called upon the "power of her people" collectively to control the river water to protect Rivendell. In the books, she wasn't involved in this part of the story, and it was the power of one of the Three Rings, possessed by her father Elrond, and Gandalf's powers that controlled the water and swept away the Nazgûl. I guess the director could already hear people's complaints before they were made, and decided to give Arwen more to do than the books do.
The jewel that Arwen gave Aragorn is called the Evenstar.

Just an FYI - between Bilbo's birthday party when he leaves the shire and when Gandalf and Frodo figure out that the ring is the one ring - 17 years go by in the books. Hobbits live longer than men. But the ring still extended Bilbo's life significantly and other Hobbits in the books had already remarked on how young Frodo looked even though he was in his late 40's when they set off to destroy the ring.
