Yeah, it is a little confusing at the beginning of the movie. None of the characters in the story know that Bilbo's ring is THE Ring. Gandalf is suspicious and goes to investigate. He throws the Ring into fire to see if the writing emerges, which it does, confirming the identity of the Ring and that they have a bit of problem.......

The emotions in Gandalf's face when he thinks it's not...and then when Frodo says there's writing on it. It's heartbreaking to watch. He loves that family of hobbits, and he knows the dangers Frodo is in. In my mind, Gandalf always hoped that someone else would be burdened with taking the Ring to Mt. Doom. That Frodo wouldn't have to volunteer. And when he does, Gandalf knows that he may have doomed Frodo; for someone who loves hobbits, he may as well have sent him on a suicide mission.

Even those who've read the books often don't realize that the gap between Bilbo's 111th birthday party, and Gandalf's return to warn Frodo happen 17 years apart.

    • @zoesumra9152
      @zoesumra9152 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@MrVvulf But the film omits the 17 year gap. Otherwise there would have been no way to introduce Merry and Pippin organically at the party, also one cannot simply start one's modern story by saying, "And then nothing happened for 17 years...".

"how does Gandalf know that the Ring is not going to overpower Frodo?"
Thats the thing. He knows it will overpower Frodo, just like it almost overpowered Bilbo. Its super dangerous. He is playing damage control. If and when it overpowers Frodo, he will not become a dark god that will destroy everything in the world. He will be weak enough to defeat, or the burden be given to other before it happens. But he also knows that hobbits do not desire power, or revenge, or any of the things the Ring can give. They love home, and friends, and parties, and having two breakfasts and an early lunch. They love the soil that grows their crops, and they love the weed in their pipes, and they dont care about weapons of iron and steel. So they are incredibly resistant to the lure and effect of the One Ring. A hobbit is a perfect being to hold it and the Shire the perfect place to hide it. After all, a Dark Lord desiring only power assumes that others do the same, and the Ring would be passed to the one with the most power to take it by force. That it could never stay in a sleepy peaceful village, or the village be turned to a capital of war.

Bilbo gave the ring to Frodo because Frodo is his heir and he is leaving behind most of his possessions.
Gandalf doesnt care too much about it because, while he knew it was one of the magic rings, he thought it was one of the lesser ones. Probably one of the lost Dwarf rings. Naturally once he finds out its the one ring he freaks the hell out :P.
As for why the hobbits are so resistant to the rings influence, its because the ring in the end tries to enhance and corrupt whatever power the wearer already has as well as tempt them by playing unto their ambitions.
Hobbits have very little power and very little ambition to become grander than they are. As such the ring has a relatively weak effect on them (though in the end they too lose to it).

Right. The movie (unlike the book) makes it very clear from the beginning that the ring Bilbo has is the One Ring of Sauron, but that gives some viewers the mistaken impression that the characters know this too.

Gandalf didn't know that Bilbo's ring was the One Ring, he said "there are many magical rings in this world". Bilbo realised that the Ring was a burden and pass it to Frodo, his heir, alongside his house and properties. That night Gandals saw something strange in Bilbo and realised that something was terribly wrong with that Ring, but only in the moment he put the Ring in the fire and saw the writings he knew that Bilbo's Ring was the One Ring.
Also, Gandalf knows that the Ring eventually will overpower Frodo, but he hopes that it will take a long time. Its a difficult position, but Gandalf knows that Bilbo had the Ring for like 50 years, and Hobbits have no desire for power, so Gandalf thinks that the Ring will be relatively safe in Frodo's hands

The reason the Black Riders dont want to cross the river is because it marks the boundary to Elrond's realm and he has the power to protect it. It is he that calls upon the waters to make them rise in the book and not Arwen. The Black Riders know this is the border and if they try and cross it shlt's going down but they attempt it anyway and you see the result.
Incidentally, Gandalf reveals to Frodo later when recounting the event, that it was he that created the shapes of horses in the waves as an added touch as he and Elrond worked their magic from the house.

  • @Pixelologist
    @Pixelologist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

"How does Gandalf know that the Ring is not going to overpower Frodo?"
Well, he knows that EVENTUALLY...it would. But he also knows that Hobbits are unique amongst the races of Middle Earth in that they have no real desire for power for the Ring to manipulate them with and this makes them remarkably resistant to the Ring's powers. He knows that Bilbo has been in possession of the Ring for some 50-odd years at this point and is still....MOSTLY...himself (although we've seen that the Ring IS taking its toll on him, psychologically).
In general throughout these films, you have to bear in mind that the Ring is, itself, acting to manipulate and corrupt the thoughts of those around it in service of its goal: to return to the hand of the Dark Lord. The big argument at Elrond's Council is a direct result of the Ring's fanning the flames of their mutual distrust. The Ring is a character in these films, just as surely as is Frodo and Gandalf and Aragorn and all the rest.
With regard to Arwen, she's choosing to forego the immortality of her race in order to cleave herself to Aragorn; for love.

Gandalf the Grey is the human embodiment of an angel, as is Saruman the White. There are two tiers, the Valar are the higher tier, kind of like the Roman/Greek gods; and the Maiar, who serve the Valar.
The wizards were angels ("Maiar"), chosen to be sent to Middle-Earth to advise all of the people (elves, dwarves, men, etc) and to watch for signs of the return of Sauron ("the enemy"), who is also a Maiar. The wizards only look like old men, but are fully capable. They arrived thousands of years in the past, sometime after Isildur was killed and the One Ring was lost. They looked exactly as they do now, never aging. Gandalf is a nomad, traveling where he pleases and helping as he goes.
Gandalf is in the Shire for Bilbo's 111th birthday, because they have a long history (which you'll see when you watch "The Hobbit") and Gandalf visits the Hobbits from time-to-time.

If you get the extended DVD's I highly recommend watching a lot of the extra material. It's not quite as epic as the movie series itself, but it's almost as entertaining, because there were a couple of towns worth of people who lived together producing this epic saga for years and they really put their lives into it, like you can see in the films. there's an absolutely vast amount of lore on Middle Earth, all written by Tolkien. he spent half a century writing & rewriting its stories, some complete some fragmented some in multiple contradictory versions. between what he completed & what his son compiled from notes & published after his death it takes up about a whole shelf of a bookshelf to hold them all. it's one of the most complex exercises in world-building ever accomplished. Tolkien was primarily a scholar, teaching language at Oxford. to support his world he invented a sheaf of languages for Middle Earth's inhabitants to speak. Elves, Dwarves, Orcs & others each have fully formed unique languages. none of which taxed Tolkien's abilities; one of his other projects was writing the Oxford English Dictionary. you know that huge dictionary every library has, that has many times more words than you'll ever need or know? that one, the OED. not all by himself but still.

It is more true to say that he needed to invent a story to support his fictional languages ( all of which were shaped by their respective cultures and thousands of years of invented history.) The man was a genius, and invented the whole genre of modern literary fantasy. Thank you for your excellent post!

The reason many people are encouraging you to watch the Extended Versions for the second and third movie is because there is background information on certain characters that can help answer some questions. I prefer the Extended Editions but they are long movies.

I guess that I'm not the only one, who s strongly reccomending to watch the other two movie in their extended cut versions.
The extended version for the first movie is OK, but you won't miss much, if you just watch the cinema version.
The extended cut for the second film makes it a better movie.
But the extended cut for the last film of the trilogy is a must. Please, trust me with that.
That movie got eleven Oscars (!!!)

Listen, I'm going to be honest with you. I already recorded The Two Towers with the extended version and I was planning on doing the theatrical version for Return Of The King because it really takes a toll on you to record and then edit such long footage. The Fellowship Of The Ring (theatrical version) took me 7 days to edit. The only thing that is making me consider doing the longer version of Return of the King is that someone in the comments said that they tell Gollum's backstory and i feel curious about it so...i'm still deciding.

TL:DR the extra scenes simply flesh the film out better and create a more immersive experience.
Honestly, there are roughly 13 scenes which aren't included in the theatrical version of ROTK and at least half of them feel so natural to have them in, that to know they aren't in the film, makes it feel rushed if they aren't included. I can see why you want to do the theatrical version simply for editing time, but for the first time watching, a lot of them scenes will create a better visual story and have an upgraded chronology of the film and story's progression. This discussion has been made with a lot of reactors and some of them go back to see the extra scenes after after watching the theatrical version and can't believe they were left out.

Strider was a nickname given to Aragorn by the people of the town of Bree. The name seems to refer to Aragorn's long legs compared to the shorter-legged Bree-men. But, Aragorn, professionally, was a Ranger.
Bilbo gave Frodo the ring for a few reasons. 1) They didn't know that it was the lost Ring of Power. Bilbo found the ring in Gollum's cave - and all Bilbo knew was that it was a magical ring and it made him invisible when worn. 2) Bilbo had been possessed by the ring so Gandalf talked him into leaving it behind with the rest of Frodo's inheritance. 3) Frodo was Bilbo's heir and Bilbo left everything to Frodo before he left the Shire.

Elves are inmortal (or so long lived it’s almost the same). However Elrond and Arwen are descendants of an elven lady called Luthien and a mortal man called Beren, who long ago had a very hard love story while fighting a dark lord far worse than Sauron. As such descendants, they have the privilege of choosing to live forever like the elves, or live a single mortal life as men, which the elves do not fear, because they consider the mortality of men a great gift from the Valar (the gods of this world).
So, what Arwen was doing in that scene was offering Aragorn to renounce her immortality, so she would live a single life with him, instead of living eternally - without him. Just as Luthien did with Beren.

One of the greatest movie adaptations of the 21st century (we are almost a quarter way thru it now after all) about one of the greatest pieces of literature of the 20th century. Often claimed to be impossible to film I was worried when it first came out. When the theater grew dark and the singing and the chanting began with Kate Blanchet's narration I knew it was going to be the most epic thing ever. I took a bunch of co-workers who had never heard of it. They were straight up stunned when the first movie was over. About half of them immediately went out and bought the books.

@@aaronbrandon2321 That's because the majority of fans have their heads up Tolkein's ass and worship anything he writes. The extended versions are closer to the books, but they're not better movies. Not at all. They drag on way too much and become convoluted. The pacing is clunky and clogged with way too much back story. The sum gets lost in all its parts and it becomes a wish wash of differing tonal states.
The theatrical films are far more grounded, more plot orientated about Frodo and his quest to destroy the ring. There are no scenes that pause the pacing to explain family origins, ent draughts, skull avalanches and other silly entries that only serve to distract and ruin the story at large. The theatrical cuts have an immediacy that is lacking in the extended, there's more tension and urgency in the shorter versions making them more serious experiences.

This series is an actual masterpiece of film making and film scoring ..wining the most Oscars ever given to a film! If you enjoyed this then it’s 100% worth the extended version for the next 2. Enjoy!

Basically all of your observations were very on-point, considering this is your first time watching :) Was more enjoyable than many of the other reactors! Subscribed :) Oh and the hair is perfect and you're quite pretty as it is. ^^
