I never used to care for them, then I became obsessed with them. Then I was over them completely for a while, and now I'm starting to get interested again...
I really like these "Do I Need One" videos. They do a really good job at explaining what the effects do and how to apply one. You asked what we wanted next, and then over a year later, you still haven't put out another one. In a way, you did cover distortion, overdrive, and fuzz in your video about their differences, but you still could go through the science and function of many other pedals -WAH, chorus, flanger, reverb, echo, delay. Some of these may seem common sense and so easy to explain that the audience shouldn't need them, but with how good you are at explaining sound effects, it would be very enlightening.
Mezurashii5 well a guitar can be used in many different ways and an 8 string doesnt have to e used for chugging it can be used for tapping and sweping and stuff
Take your age, divide it by 2, multiply that number by 4, add 2, then multiply that number with 750. That is how many guitars you need to feel satisfaction.
I m a drummer from a small town in Oregon USA . I find your videos very interesting and informative, keep up the good work. I think I know more about guitar rigs now than most of the players I have worked with . thanks
Im a new subscriber but I wanted to say I appreciate the way you educate guitarists. Im not one to sit through a video and listen to someone talk for 15 minutes. Love how ya keep it straight to the point and educational! Thanks and keep up the great work!
Fantastic video, dude. It never occurred to me to put my phaser in front of my OD section, and really i'm digging the sound. I always learn something new from these videos!
Loved the diagram explanation. As someone that is trying to start building pedals I really appreciate it. I wish I could find more explanations like that.
If you are a guitarist that believes all you need is a guitar and an amplifier and does not seek to exploit other tone possibilities, then you don't need a phaser. However, if you wish to sound WILDER than a purveyor of endless notes and chords with no special craziness, then you need one. We could say that Jimi Hendrix used the Univibe to sound freaky, and then Eddie Van Halen replaced the Univibe with the Phase 90, and then after that we have this debate -- use crazy effects or not? Listen carefully to the way that EVH uses it -- on a few seconds, then off. It changes his sound from his rhythm guitar to a crazy lead sound that stands out and sounds almost like melting metal. I am fine with the purists who just want the amp sound, but many of them seem to arrogantly think that adding effects implies you don't know what you're doing. PS Colin...Have you seen my MXR Phase 90 video, it seems to me you have many of the same ideas.
Great video. Love the nod to Iron Maiden too. I run my phaser through my effects loop & my overdrive and distortion through the front. I actually liked your sound with the phaser after the distortion.
***** On the song above though it was a flanger not a phaser. I mean it's no big deal, it's just a common misconception by people that he used a phaser on that song.
I love my phase 90. It's hardly a universally essential tool, however it's very useful to have in your arson given how wide the applications are. I mainly use mine for leads not just because it helps them pop out as Colin said, but the swirling boost and cutting of treble that the pedal gives makes the picking attack a little bit easier and less pronounced.
Great video man, I learned a ton. Shopping for a phaser on Reverb right now. Also, I have some of those old movie prints on my classroom wall! Thank you for the video!
Great vid as always. I recommend the dod 201 phasor. Its only 2 stages so it's a lot smoother and more subtle than say a phase 90. Im not a huge fan of phasers but still use the 201 all the time.
I'm one of those guys who has a really hard time with multi-effects because of a few reasons.. 1. I like chorus, phaser and flanger BEFORE distortion or amp, however you look at it. 2. I like reverb and delay AFTER distortion or in fx loop. Which is why I need individual pedals and 2 different loops or a better (also read more expensive) multi-fx unit. Thank you for this video, I really liked it.
Do I need a floyd rose-style tremolo vs other styles of tremolo.. I know it's not necessarily electronics based but you could incorporate effects into that one too.
I went into a guitar shop just to try out some pedals and the guy who worked there came in and told me i needed a phaser so i could rub my hand on the strings to sound like Van Halen, in addition to saying that i cant use a Telecaster for rock and metal. Needless to say i'm not going back there again.
I always enjoy your informative straight forward videos. It's about time someone really explains how phasers work. From a musical stand point, if you play Funk/R&B music you really want an aggressive phaser ( Mutron ll, Small Stone, Boss PH-2). Makes the girlies want to Shiek their booties. IMO , Rock guys generally go for MRX phase 90's. They work well with distortion. I have four phasers but I think I need another one. Hmmm........
Great video! I would really like if you could go over other effects like reverb, flanger, delay and so on . I can never decide what pedals to use and when.
Been waiting for this! Very informative, thank you! especially helpful because I already have a boss phaser on my board. haha. now I know what the numbers mean. I saw that you're using a Bugera, and I'm interested in the G5 Infinium. I'm going to watch your 2 y-o review of the 333 but what are your thoughts, in paraphrase? Also, if you haven't made a video on it already, can you perhaps explain the pros/cons of 1x12 vs 2x12 cabs for musicians on a budget? (and if you have both, demonstrate?) :)
I've never been too crazy about phasers, but a light touch with a delay effect is my preferred cup of tea. I'd love a CSGuitars on delays. Just listen to the ghostly effect on Death's "The Flesh and the Power it Holds" for a reference.
The (former) Visual Sound Oil Can is the only pedal from that brand that I still use. I'm not sure if it's still available, but it's from their Garagetone line. It's actually a sound apart from the ubiquitous MXR offerings, has it's own flavor, as it was modeled after an Electra phaser from decades ago. Very much recommend it. I grabbed mine for 60 dollars new 4 years ago.
Tube overdrive: Do I need one? Or does standard (solid state?) overdrive do the same or better job. And btw. thanx for all those great videos. They changed my view on amps and pedals and improved my sound a great deal.
I'd like to see "Fuzz Pedals: Do I Need One?". I've hunted around for a while and I don't think I've seen a good video demonstrating the best ways to use a fuzz pedal despite it being fairly common. I've been toying with the idea of getting one for some time now but I've never been able to decide if I would like it or not. Cheers Colin you rock!
do i need a distortion pedal? i'm currently playing only with a cord and noting else, i need to mention that i'm an amateur. i would really like to learn more about distortion and different pickups, though
You don't need it, but it's the most common pedal. I'd recommend the MXR badass distortion because they're amazing and cheap, at $80 new or about $50 new (I use the custom 78 version)
The main advantage of pedals is that they're modular, so in theory it gives you more room to customize your sound. If you're getting a distortion tone you like from your amp, then you don't NEED a distortion pedal, but it can still be a nice thing to have, just to give your sound a little extra "kick" when needed. Of if your amp doesn't do foot-controlled channel switching, you can use a pedal to quickly switch between a clean and distorted sound, Nirvana-style. I run a digital modelled amp with a very clean tone, and then use a Boss Blues Driver when I need a little more grit. When I need something heavier, I switch to a heavier setting on the amp, and I use a Big Muff when I feel like going for all-out noise. Options exist, have fun exploring them.
Jaspertine the thing is, i have an kinda older marshall amp and whenever im trying to play a solo right, (stairway to heaven) the overdrive is kinda rouining my sound. it doesnt fit for old rock classics and neither for some metallica distortion sections
The other day, I went to a music store and when I looked at the Gibson Les Pauls, the more recent ones, I noticed that they all had those knobs that you can pull and push to split the coils. Can you talk about that? Not necessarily the Les Pauls but in general, the difference between single coils and humbuckers, when to use them and when do they sound best (clean, crunch, distorted, adding FX). That would be sweet! Thanks!
Side issue, seeing as you are Scottish and so am i. Westfield guitars were made in East Kilbride. Just found that out. I learned off a Les Paul they made.
I prefer chorus/flangers over phasers, do you think chorus/flangers sound better before distortion or after? Currently i have an MXR analog chorus but i have to run it before the amp because it doesn't have an FX loop (although i am saving up for an amp that does have one so i can solve that problem lol)
I hunted down a DOD Phasor 201 because I couldn't find an MXR Phase 45 at a reasonabke price and had to have a 2-stage phaser. I like how it's a little more subtle than a 4-stage phaser.
Speaking of splitting signals with IC, does the EQs in guitar pedals work like that too? Splitting signals by their frequencies and adjusting the volumes?
Hey Colin! Love these videos and was wondering if you intend on making one about other modulation effects (such as flangers, specifically) since I'm looking to build my first pedalboard at Christmas. If not, any response would be much appreciated, thanks!
Hey Colin, great video once again, can i ask what make your pedalboard is? Or is it homemade? I make my own but love the colour and styling of yours :)
Colin good sir I have a suggestion. At 1:30ish you were on about the pulsating noise of a phaser and the clashing noise of a phaser. For things like that I think it would be great to add little examples on the differences in tone and such.
Would be very interested in a comparison/explanation video for phasers, flangers, chorus and modulation effects in general. I've tried looking but never found a particularly satisfactory one personally.
I used to really like phasers, but I think it was just a phase.
Bah dum tss.
+AGPMandavel kek
bah wah dum huumm tss ttsssssssssssssssssss wahhhhh
I never used to care for them, then I became obsessed with them. Then I was over them completely for a while, and now I'm starting to get interested again...
I love Incubus

I always feel much smarter after these videos of Colin.. I learn tons.
I wish you went into a physics lecture, I have a physics exam today so it would be handy
lol
"Do I need one?" idea:
Do I need a 7 string guitar?
Great content dude, and I learn a lot with your schematics and scientific explanations.
The answer is YES!
Or 8 string!
Oh, wait, no one needs an 8 string.
+Mezurashii5 tell that to tosin abasi
***** I didn't say it's not cool or useful, I said it's not required in pretty much any scenario (maybe except playing solo or only with a drummer).
Mezurashii5 well a guitar can be used in many different ways and an 8 string doesnt have to e used for chugging it can be used for tapping and sweping and stuff
Guitars: Do I need one?
makes sense
Yes
Take your age, divide it by 2, multiply that number by 4, add 2, then multiply that number with 750.
That is how many guitars you need to feel satisfaction.
+Branden Hylton me too :P
Brain : do I need one ?
Step 1: listen to tame impala
Step 2: realize you do need a phaser
Christian Castellanos 130% accurate
Or some of John Fruciante's jams
Lmaaoo
I m a drummer from a small town in Oregon USA . I find your videos very interesting and informative, keep up the good work. I think I know more about guitar rigs now than most of the players I have worked with . thanks
god damn this guy, legendary explanation as always. because of you i started giving lectures about guitar and equipments...
Im a new subscriber but I wanted to say I appreciate the way you educate guitarists. Im not one to sit through a video and listen to someone talk for 15 minutes. Love how ya keep it straight to the point and educational! Thanks and keep up the great work!
You crack me up, really cleared a few things up with that circuit/signal explaination. Thanks mate!
Fantastic video, dude. It never occurred to me to put my phaser in front of my OD section, and really i'm digging the sound. I always learn something new from these videos!
Loved the diagram explanation. As someone that is trying to start building pedals I really appreciate it. I wish I could find more explanations like that.
Fuzz: Do I Need One?
show us stoner rock guys some love
Kaiju Addict I am in a stoner Rock band... I have three fuzz pedals.. your statement is accurate ha ha
Sam McCabe all on at the same time for that feedback
i use a proco rat 2 with the distortion all the way up and the tone on like 11 o'clock and i've got a pretty raw fuzz sound
@@noahdzurilla5531 well the secret recipe
If you are a guitarist that believes all you need is a guitar and an amplifier and does not seek to exploit other tone possibilities, then you don't need a phaser. You should do a Korg Miku Stomp: Do I need One? Thats also a really tough question as well.
I'm loving the fact that you're wearing an Alestorm shirt.
Great video. Love the nod to Iron Maiden too. I run my phaser through my effects loop & my overdrive and distortion through the front.
I actually liked your sound with the phaser after the distortion.
I'm fairly sure Eddie Van Halen uses a flanger on ain't talkin' bout love.
flanger and delay but a phaser is a great way to get a similar sound while not copying the tone completely just for fun lol
***** On the song above though it was a flanger not a phaser. I mean it's no big deal, it's just a common misconception by people that he used a phaser on that song.
Yeah.
But he does heavily use phaser on the first album.
MaggaraMarine Yes he does, just not on that song.
he uses a phaser on lowest setting as a treble booster
do one on wahs or chorus pedals
A Wah is essential
A chorus of wahs.
+TheLightweaver777 that would be kirk hammets dream
Wahs: Do I need one?
Kirk Hammett: Yes.
can we have a 'Do I need a Flanger pedal?' video at some point please Colin
Love the EE perspective and explanation and tying it back to Musicality
Awesome video man!!!! Greetings from Argentina!!! I really enjoy watching your videos, your explanation are awesome!!!
i do really needed,wanted a phaser shifter. guitars,bass guitars,keyboards,vocals and drums with phasers. swirly,swirly.
Thanks Colin...yes I need one. Great Video!
I was literally waiting for you to play The Number of the Beasr... You are a legend... Keep on doing what you are doing... Greetings from Croatia!
Colin, the number of the beast riff you played is killer!
if you want to play Eruption all day, you need one.
Well i wanna play Korn All day, so, same answer.
Spot on video, thank you! Will be checking out the rest of your stuff :D
you should do more examples like this. It's nice to actually hear what you are talking about
Dude you fucing rock. As a science major, I appreciate the full exposition and it added to my working knowledge. Liked and sub'ed
love these videos! please do more effects: flanger, chorus, pitch shift? your explanations are superb
Phasers were used in a lot of 70's Country music too. Waylon, Willie, David Allen Coe, Hank Jr., and even Conway Twitty employed them
Best explanation I've heard. Very comprehensive thank you
I would've recommended Atomic Punk by Van Halen. Best phaser ever.
I love my phase 90. It's hardly a universally essential tool, however it's very useful to have in your arson given how wide the applications are. Connor Bowles I probably wouldnt use a singe coil telecaster for metal but with a humbucker sure.
HillMeister's HQ dude you'd be surprised how good a single coil tele is for metal
HillMeister's HQ its my go to guitar for everything
Connor Bowles Cool. I love single coils myself. But i mostly play rock and not so much of the chugs
Connor Bowles man you get a good fuzz on the tele's neck pickup oh man that's an epic tone you'll get haha!
I love your videos man they're definitely direct to the point and You make it very interesting it's refreshing thank you
Nice in depth video. Fantastic as always!
I personally like to use a Phaser on some heavy riffs, just a smooth touch can really spice things up. Great video as usual !
I love your shirt.
Into the oceans of hell, my friend!

Taysiders in Space reference. I love you Colin haha.
3:55 sounded like he was going to go into Call Of Ktulu
The effect that Hetfield uses in "bleeding me" on the clean parts its phaser right ???
Thank you, very nice explanation.

Thanks, this was very informational.
This was SO enlightening. Now I just need to know if I need flanger,
Like the guitar, man, also enjoy your videos, thanks for your time
Another excellent video
I really love the scientific side of these kinds of things. I love playing guitar and I love physics and this just makes me happy

You don't NEED any real pedals especially a distortion pedal but I do recommend at least 2 overdrivea
You don't need it, but it's the most common pedal. I'd recommend the MXR badass distortion because they're amazing and cheap, at $80 new or about $50 new (I use the custom 78 version)

I'd love for you to bring out a line of pedals, that phaser looks simple yet badass :D
I'm a keyboardist too and It is awesome to use Chorus and a Phaser to simulate a Leslie amp for organs.
HE PLAYED THE BEGINNING OF AM I EVIL! Haha great video man, cheers!
You are in my head - just bought one on the 22nd...
I like using a very slight and subtle phaser before the distortion sometimes .... but I think that placed after the distortion it sounds too gimmicky
Hook a phaser up to a snare, best snare sound you'll ever have.
The other day, I went to a music store and when I looked at the Gibson Les Pauls, the more recent ones, I noticed that they all had those knobs that you can pull and push to split the coils. Dude You do know your shit ,I thought you were a poser at first but its obvious you have had years of experience,Subbed!
The sound is so sweet with distortion pedal.
Side issue, seeing as you are Scottish and so am i. Westfield guitars were made in East Kilbride. Just found that out. I learned off a Les Paul they made.
Hey man would love to see you do a Guitars: Do I need one?
DO I NEED A: pitch shifter or an expression pedal?
I prefer chorus/flangers over phasers, do you think chorus/flangers sound better before distortion or after? Currently i have an MXR analog chorus but i have to run it before the amp because it doesn't have an FX loop (although i am saving up for an amp that does have one so i can solve that problem lol)
im not a phaser guy but since i have a CF7 i use it from time to time on some licks. good stuff
Hi. What are the settings of the distortion and the phase pedals to get the iron maiden number of the beast intro sound ? Thanks.
First time watching. Great video. Thanks. Subscribed for sure.
where did you purchase that kit? +CSGuitars I wouldn't mind having a go at building one
Hey Colin, what do you think of the black Russian ehx phasers from back in the 90's?
Great shirt my dude!
If not, any response would be much appreciated, thanks!
great video bro!
I suggest multi-band EQs like the Dunlop/MXR 108 10-band. Delay seems like the most obvious one to do next though.
Wahs: Do I need one?
Kirk Hammett: Yes.
YOU SIR! ARE A TRUE PIRATE!
Hey Colin, great video once again, can i ask what make your pedalboard is? Or is it homemade? I make my own but love the colour and styling of yours :)
It's made by Fossboard. You can check out their stuff here: www.fossboard.com/
+CSGuitars thanks colin! I thought i recognized them :)
