  • Gain is a confusing term. It's often used interchangeably with the word 'distortion', but do they mean the same thing?
We dig a little deeper into the terminology to see just what 'gain' is.

It is nice to have an accurate and clear explanation. Most times I've heard this explained, the explainer has- ahem!- distorted the facts. So it was good to hear it clearly, and to, sorry, gain knowledge.

So, gain is volume and I should max it out on my Line 6 Spider IV 15 watt combo? Then I should take away my mids, correct? Am I doing this right?

So now we need a video comparing the difference between "gain" and "volume" as it applies to amplifiers and effects!
My understanding is that volume just increases the amount of current so that you can provide more power to a speaker, but you are probably more knowledgeable than I am on this matter

I have learned a lot about things I have been doing for the past 20-30 years (both right and wrong) and it really helps to understand a lot of these principles as new technology comes out. Thanks for doing what you do brother.

To make things more confusing: many times gain is measured in Log(In/Out) instead of just the In/Out multiplier, if those multipliers reach large values.
