We had one of these when we lived in Germany and I was extremely happy travelling and camping in it. The layout is so clever with the rear kitchen as I could make tea and breakfast while my wife stayed in the very big and comfortable bed. Didn't know if this would suit us but after a 17 day trip through Austria, Slovakia, Croatia and Italy we couldn't wait to go away again the next weekend. The longer vehicle also has a decent toilet layout and another full length cupboard. Build quality was superb and gave the impression it would last for decades and, with the higher power engine, it was a rocketship.
I wish I could get something similar in the USA, good enough as a daily driver and ok for long journeys and weekends. You can get pop tops that lift the other way but the interior is DIY.
ROB D FORD makes motor vans here 3 lengths 3 heights, never seen pop tops here , diesel In the shortest one as you know diesel costs more than petrol .! Cheers 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
@@flybyairplane3528 I believe this vehicle is based on a version of the ford transit that falls in size between the transit connect and the regular ford transit, the ford transit custom. We can't get it here in the USA. Diesel is definitely more popular in Europe, but I'd love a hybrid version that you could use as a generator on site when you need a charge. A plug-in hybrid would be great as you could use it as a daily driver using cheaper electricity and have the hybrid option for camping. Likely just a pipe dream at this point. Ursa Minor does a pop top for the smaller USA transit connect but it is not cheap.
Hi guys, great to see a Nugget on your channel! We have sold our California now and are collecting our new Nugget L1 pop top next week, but are still awaiting the delivery of the Nugget Plus (L2) High Top later this year, which we first ordered in February 2020. There are big delays in production now due to the crisis so we luckily managed to find an L1 in a showroom to buy and use this season, and maybe beyond. You mentioned some good points with the layout, which encouraged us to swap. Like you say, a proper 5 seat vehicle (which is what we need) and a kitchen which would embarrass most motorhomes!
Great van, let down by Ford not standing behind their warranty (see comment in main thread) - needs someone with your channel reach to do a video on this
Great to see the Nugget on your channel, thank you for the walkthrough. It is definitely the best thing I have ever purchased, we have the German version with only one sliding door and fixed high top roof. Lots more storage space in that version, just with the downside of having a 2.8m clearance, so no access to multistorey carparks in town (that sticker with the height is a godsend!).
This design will fit in my very low clearance (due to a steel cross beam) under my townhouse of 84” . The Nugget will clear with over 2” Clearance (about 4 cm to spare)! Now the big question, as always will be if and when it will be available in the US?
That is very well thought out. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like that in the USA. That rear kitchen would work really well and I like that there are 5 seatbelts! That would have to be a custom project here.
Nice to see the back of that standard old rock n roll layout with a fresh approach. + option of a proper cassette toilet in long wheelbase model, and Hot running water and diesel heater as standard.
Westfalia has such clever and miraculous design solutions. I’ve longed for my Westfalia Eurovan for years. Sold it to someone who crashed it. The eurovan engine was hell to work on according to my mechanic. I think ford is an easier car to work on. Thanks for a thorough video. 👏🏻
Great review! These are only sold in Europe and the UK. Not in the States. We have plenty of older Transit Vans that used to belong to Bob The Plumber and are now converted. Some with great care and some home built versions. Somehow, here in the Colonies, we seem to be behind the times.
Gary, FORD TRANSIT sells motor vans here, 3 lengths, 3 heights , I have seen a website with them once , even offer AWD not sure if 4X4 as yet , cheers 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Really nice. I'll have to look around and see if they have anything like this in the USA? I would like to see a version with the full size transit vans too.
Nice to see more alternatives based on the Transit Custom now being offered such as the Bürstner Copa, Karmann Duncan, Dreamer Cap Coast and Dreamer Cap Land. The rear kitchen layout of the Nugget is very much a distinguishing feature. My ideal vehicle is currently the Nugget Plus (L2) which then also includes a cassette toilet right at the back. The Rock n Roll bed in the Bürstner Copa and Karmann Duncan have the advantage of using the seat back as the top surface of the bed and so offering a flatter and more even area.
If you have kids and kit those 2 sliding doors would be great ! Rest of functional necessities at the back giving you some living space up front. And yes its a fab Ford ! Great to see you doing varied reviews guys, well done as always much appreciated.
Awesome that you’ve had a chance to look at the ford nugget. Great vlog-thanks guys. We have a you tube channel with lots of info specifically around the ford nugget- started with our ‘exploring the nugget ‘ playlist which is information and technical info in the nugget. It has evolved since we started the vlogs in January and now covers other aspects such as our day to day use and travel as a family of 4 based in Wales. Great for anyone interested in having a look and we are also on instagram&facebook if anyone interested in following our nugget adventure. We are also happy to answer any queries anyone may have. Thanks again guys for yet another great vlog. Love seeing your vlogs.
Yes definitely- we sold our family car to buy the Ford Nugget and it is both practical and easy to drive for day to day use and every other adventure :)
THIS is my dream campervan! If only I could get my hands on one in Canada! I've never seen a rear kitchen design like that, but I LOVE it. Really makes it feel like you have a separate kitchen area.
Our transporter with rear kitchen one side and wardrobe the other plus 2 individual rear seats gives a long run through the middle which gets used for lots of planks etc constantly. No bed upstairs but we do have a fold up rigid roof.
I love the kitchen layout(but I would prefer sliding window like in the california). The fabric of the pop-top roof seems better on the california). Also, here we have a lot of parking limited to 2m, so the california is able to park but not the nugget :(. Also one thing to mention, with the california, you can have 2 big crate to store your leisure/travel stuff, here it would always be in the way.
Just got a L1H1 panel van to convert. I think I’ll stick to the standard side and Rock’n’Roll. I’ll use the rail system to be able to move the seat front to back as needed.
Have to say that wardrobe has me thinking about the downstairs of my ‘83 Vanagon. Bins and hanging room with one lockable door out of sight. Downstairs bed looks challenging. All around it looks perfect for a single traveler. Love the platform as well.
The storage works well and its great to see alternatives isn’t it. We have this van and works really well. We are a family of four and use this as our day to day vehicle and for our adventures. We have no issues with size for us at present with two little ones but agree it would be great for single traveller too as you could leave the downstairs as ‘living area’ while having the comfy bed up upstairs. Downstairs bed is easy though- there is a full review on our page on pretty much every aspect of this van - see the ‘exploring the nugget’ playlist if you are looking for instructional/ technical info on how things work.
You said that you can't have a side kitchen with two sliding doors ? My bespoke professionally built van has exactly that, with access through the other sliding door to the cylinder drop vent box. There is also a hole through the splash back to a privacy glass window, with a sliding window within it and black out curtain.
Having a mate who bought a brand new Cali Ocean, with the problems of a poptop, bungee straps wrapped round, to stop it flapping in the wind, it`s a hitop transit for me.
I was really sceptical about this one but I'm totally sold in the end. That layout is fantastic! Really cool van. Will definitely check this out as an alternative to the VW.
I’m very unlikely to be buying a camper van but I’ve always enjoyed your channel - the high production standard, content, branding, music & very good presenting make it a great & interesting watch - great work guys & all credit to you! 👏👏🙌🙌
Yet another choice we don't have across the pond. Would have been great to hear size comparison between Ford, VW, and Mercedes. Glad y'all are able to get out these days.
That is a shame you can’t get any in the states! Guess you’ll have to move here then 😆. The van is a very similar size the the California and Mercedes Marco Polo.
In the short wheel base version they are pretty much all the same length, all similar driving styles as well. The kitchen design and layout is where things really differ, we wanted 5 seats and the rear kitchen, so basically the nugget is the only available option in this size of van.
For the same money in the US you can buy a full size motorhome. I don't think they be competitive on price. Plus this 1 tonne Transit is not tested against US standards.
To be honest... up until that bed I was sold. not too keen on the way the bed works downstairs. kitchen layout is gorgeous. Thanks Tim for letting us see inside. :)
Great Video. I think that care must be taken when choosing van layouts. For me personally the rear kitchen layout would not work. I have a Cali and find the rear “parcel shelf” type storage very useful as I can store a couple of bodyboards along with all the wetsuits and camping gear. For me the traditional side kitchen is still a winner and in particular the Cali storage solutions are ideal for my circumstances and usage.
I love it! Thanks for another great video. Beautifully shot, well presented and very informative. I’ve got a Transit Custom L2H2 on order which I plan to convert to something similar to this layout but with a strong Star Trek influence. Wish me luck!
Just make sure you add up all the conversion costs, as a converter may be similar in price as they pay trade prices for the equipment. It's a very big job to do by yourself.
having owned two Nuggets in the 2000s - both left hookers - the only drawback to this van is the absence of a dead storage space underneath a rear parcel shelf. Our then young kids were separated from the kitchen. Anyone tried cooking up in a side-slung kitchen with a 2 and 4 yer old on a wet day in Scotland ? No problem in a Nugget. The -foot zone' beneath the kitchen is actually a genius place to store all the sleeping bags - much better than them being on the rear shelf by day in a side-slung van. A carefully sourced , light weight, roof box takes care of outdoor table and chairs.
I've had a Nugget Plus on order since April, really looking forward to it arriving but it seems I will not get it until January. I hired one for a day to check things out from Hill's Ford in Malvern and was very impressed with it. The plus does give you useful extra room in the kitchen area, and the fitted toilet is a must I think.
Nice van great video i think the layout looks good but i think that kitchen would be a bit tight to use with roof down , i have vw trad layout and am happy with it having seen this but thanks for shareing
Thanks MUCH for share and video! Unfortunate we cannot get on the other side of the pond :( Beats the heck out of the VW, I believe.... All the BEST to you and Cheers ! :)
Should be an option for a split 2 seater instead of a fixed 3 seater which is a waste of space if your a solo user or even a couple who only need the roof bed. Apart from that it's a nice bit of kit
We ordered a L1 with pop top in Nov 2020 and it should be delivered in Aug 2021 but due to crisis we have to wait....we can´t wait to get our Nugget but we´re really jealous about the second sliding door for the UK :) stay safe everyone
Great van layout and also one we could use in Australia as we need a sliding door on the passenger side which the California Ocean and others don’t have
Hi. We have a Nugget and can confirm the bed is easy to do and goes flat- we have numerous videos on our channel on the Ford Nugget- mainly under the 'exploring the nugget' playlist including one specifically on the bed if you wanted to see it.
Nice to see a different layout - it really looked usable. I don't think putting tins on that shelf while driving though they would make nasty projectiles if you had to stop suddenly, I would most likely use it for putting paper towel on or things that you use on site that can quickly be put away when on the move.
We have this van and use those shelves for washing up accessories, cooking/food accessories like oil, ketchup. We also have found some containers that fit to stop spillages. Works well. More info in episode 3 of our ‘planning for the off ‘ playlist on our channel if you wanted to see what we mean. Hope this helps.
Nearly bought one… ended up going for the Cali. If I’d have gone for the nugget I wouldn’t find myself in the perpetual California waiting room that I’m now in haha. 🥴
I've always liked the Ford Nugget layout, though the downstairs bed is for emergencies or children (those animals with the flexible fascia) only. There's a couple older ones with hard tops around in my neighbourhood. They seem rather monstrously high.
love the rear kitchen but I’m not sold on these non-side kitchen layouts. They seem to compromise too much on seating space - you’ll be playing footsie with anyone in the opposite seats vs a california. For poor weather in the UK where you might be cooped up for a while that could be an issue
That is a cute little van. I like it. It had everything. Kitchen was amazing. One thing that I would change is more head room. Roof goes straight up,and locked it inside itriangle. Roof is an ideal solution for safety.
Not entirely convinced myself…. A lot of room for a kitchen that I’m not sure I’d use…. But fantastic storage, top bed looks super comfy and the space for made for the portapotty is excellent😊
overall looks good, i would say the base vehicle is a Transit Custom Tourneo Limited as all the door trims and window are genuine Ford. Down side the rock n Roll bed looks to be far from flat, unless you didn't set it up correctly,
Problem with rear kitchens they are in the roughest riding place in the vehicle everything gets bounced, broken and falls apart..I had 1 in the past and that is all it took for me like the front fold up bed in the front the tent ones are dusty cold and hot in the summer nice space!
Just watched this following your recent Dreamer review and like a lot of this design do thanks for reviewing - do they do a hi top version do you know as we like the high top with perm head height and extra storage in our auto camper. Assume it was a LWB chassis but looked plenty of leg room and high quality. The bed still looked a bit up and down but maybe with a topper it would soon flatten out. Shame you couldn’t get to the passenger seat so one in bed you can still be working etc …. Again all personal choice so interesting comparison to ours - thanks
You need to be careful when u pull the roof down that u don’t pinch your fingers when u push the red button in on the right hand side gas strut! I did it twice! The 185ps auto is superb! I had the manual version for a few days and got almost 40mpg with the 4 of us in and fully loaded up, I was cruising at about 70 mph. Lots of storage but it takes a few days to get everything where u need it. Only other thing I would say is the seat belt buckles fall below the seat when u put the rear seat back together. The heater is amazing., the fridge gets cold really quickly too.
We had one of these when we lived in Germany and I was extremely happy travelling and camping in it. Whoever designed this van deserves a knighthood. The best I've seen in a van this size.
the vehicle is designed and built by Ford and the conversion is done by Westfalia - and it is absolute toip quality.
Best layout...kitchen/bath in back...5 seater...great upper bed...Wish they were available in USA.
I wish I could get something similar in the USA, good enough as a daily driver and ok for long journeys and weekends. You can get pop tops that lift the other way but the interior is DIY.

A perfect van!
Great video, nice well designed camper van.
Great vlog , did a Great job , i love fords , Defo suit me and maybe a partener , looked forward to seeing the nugget , they are rare over here
Nearly bought one… ended up going for the Cali. If I’d have gone for the nugget I wouldn’t find myself in the perpetual California waiting room that I’m now in haha. 🥴
Very nice
Does it have a Leisure battery on board? I would love to add a few solar panels on the roof!
Down side the rock n Roll bed looks to be far from flat, unless you didn't set it up correctly,
Hi. We can confirm the bed goes flat and easy to do. There is a video specifically on the bed on our channel if you wanted more info.
Would LOVE one of these. When are they coming to Australia?
Great demo, thank you
Would love to see these style of compact vans for sale in Canada
Would be a pia trying to steer it from the drivers side! 😉
That’s a great layout, I just think the VW looks a nicer van from the outside.
Other than Paul davies, there are surprisingly no closed-minded VW fanboys making bigoted comments. Very cool for a change.
Great Review!!!
Thx
You don't see rear kitchens often enough in these vans. I have one in my Bilbos T4 and I absolutely love the layout.
Really nice love the layout
There's a table? did i miss this?
Sweet camper
You need to be careful when u pull the roof down that u don’t pinch your fingers when u push the red button in on the right hand side gas strut! I did it twice! The 185ps auto is superb!
I had the manual version for a few days and got almost 40mpg with the 4 of us in and fully loaded up, I was cruising at about 70 mph.
Lots of storage but it takes a few days to get everything where u need it.
Only other thing I would say is the seat belt buckles fall below the seat when u put the rear seat back together.
The heater is amazing., the fridge gets cold really quickly too.
Is it coming to the US
