I remember seeing a House of the Dead 3 machine stuck on the Chihiro screen at a bowling alley a couple of years ago. Forgot what the error was, though.
I was thinking to myself that had to be the card reader error just right before you said that! It only gives you one warning during play right before you pick your car about not being able to save/car reader unavailable after that it disappears. I will try to make a video of Wangan Midnight: Maximum Tune 2 (still waiting on save cards) this weekend if I get a chance. Awesome video though of some Chihiro action!
Awesome piece of history you have there!!! I really like your videos, I always watch your content but I figure that I never commented... so Yeah thanks a lot for sharing this, since for some of us is the only way to see the guts of these things. Greetings from a subscriber in Argentina =)
seriously love this game, every saturday guys were crowded around both of them at sega gameworks in tx. they replaced it with an aquarium. luke likes the trance music. haha
I shoulda figured that's what the error message was, Wangan Midnight: MAXIMUM TUNE series used little thin magnetic cards for saving your W/L records and your cars stats (similar to Initial D v1-3) as you earn upgrades and whatnot. Definitely a great game! And not to mention the sweet soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro. Looking forward to the actual gameplay vid of this one!
Oh man awesome :) I only just came across these maximum tune games on youtube a couple of weeks ago and was blown away, they look closer to the original ridge racer than the direction the real ridge series went in. Love the music and everything, wish I could play :)
yellow error top left of screen says no cards present in the machine please refill, cards used to save your progresss on back of detailed crads with magnetic backing to save data
Yeah the capcom IO won't downscale 31khz sadly hence the screwed up screen. I'll have to grab another blast I think for these games, the egret is perfect for low res but a trisync is real handy.
Great video! The last time, you'd forgotten Outrun 2, and you almost did it this time again, I kept thinking to myself, "is he gonna forget again?". Good thing you remembered. heh
Probably more because Sega had a bunch of GB-ROM drives laying around and it also allowed arcade owners to use some of the same hardware they had from a previous gen. Space also isn't as much of an issue as you could always compress the data on the disk and it loads into memory on boot. Most XBox games didn't use most of the disk either, though true most were larger than 1GB.
Very cool looking game. Amazing how Sega would base an Arcade machine on original Xbox hardware too. Midnight Maximum is a game I've never seen in the wild. Must be a Japanese only release. Would love to play this someday.
great video bout the chihiro hardware =) this system sadly does not has many games but as you mentioned, there are some gems on it^^ looking forward for some racing action on that frankencade, if you ask me i would play mount that steering unit on that frankencade forever and just use that cab for racinggames, cause you still have your neo cabs and the blast city for some stick´s and button games =)
Hey all, I have basically all the music for this game. If you want me to upload it somewhere, I'd be happy to. I only have music for WMMT 1 and 2, though. 3 and above, you're out of luck here, sorry.
Remembered seeing Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune in my local arcade back in the day. Sad to see the arcade close and be replaced with a kidney dialysis center. At least this is what the situation is now but I remember having lots of fun with this game and I can remember beating my nephew in it at one point; he isn't a good driver by the way.
i have the other one with the dimm board on top. tell my luke, witch game need 1 gb!? 512 mb for outrun2 and house of the death3 are the biggest games i think!? right!? great video man, this style from videos i like so much from you. thanks for making bro...
Great insight into the Sega/Xbox Chihiro coin-op system - didn't Sega use that system for the Outrun2 / SP remakes? That Namco game looks quite impressive too :-)
Didn't this have cards you could use to "save" your car and come back and play later on this game? I remember it was in most of the round 1's. Like the store point cards with the printed surface on the front showing your specifications etc which got updated each time you played.
With how expensive Naomi hardware was you would think they would have used a more robust mechanism for the GD-ROM drive. It's actually not much different from the one in the Dreamcast. Do you still have any of your cabinets or did you have to get rid of them?
This hardware is the same as the Original MICROSOFT XBOX as the file extension is gamename.xbx, would it not be nice to be able to play XBOX games on it also.
HI, I know it is a long time ago, but you mention that it can run games off a compact flash. Can you tell me how this works please. My GD Rom drive has crapped out. Thanks
Also I think Sega believed that GD-Rom technology would make pirating discs more difficult. Little did Sega know that pirates would have a field day with GD-Rom discs; the poor Dreamcast didn't know what hit it...
Well, the main reason why Sega chose the GD Rom format was to prevent piracy and it didn't work for the Dreamcast that's for certain. True, the games were not direct rips as CDRs can only hold 700MB of data but they were good enough. I almost regret I wasn’t part of the whole "underground "Dreamcast rip craze years ago; I was busy fiddling around with my PS2. It must have been an exciting time for savvy Dreamcast owners. Poor Sega was probably pulling their hair out though lol.
Neat system never heard of it before. Do these type of systems have a sound test system? Maybe thats how you could listen to some of the in game music.
Hey Luke, just regarding your collection of arcades and their connections..... is it possible to use CPS2 boards in an MvS, if you simply unhook the JAMMA connector? If so, or if it's a little complicated or whatnot, would you consider doing a video tutorial about it, because i'm sure i'm not the only person interested in that sort of thing. Thanks in advance
I saw a Chihiro boot years ago at a place I live decently close to, but I really doubt they still own it. With it being a kids place (Gaddytown. Yup) they probably have every mobile game based touchscreen cabinet imaginable.
It looks like Neo geo was the only one who got it wright with the arcade machines, all the games run on all the machines, why did all other manufacturers had to make it so damn complicated.
People have managed to find a way to pull all the data off of a Dreamcast GB-ROM using either the serial or broadband port which is a huge hassle, I can't see the Arcade hardware being any easier. Not to mention there are very few GB-ROM disks and even fewer burners out in the wild, your only option for a 1:1 rip is using SD Cards. ALL version of the rips you see online for CDRs have content removed and/or compressed. And all of this is ignoring the security chips on Arcades.
I've always wanted a Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3 / Initial D: Arcade Stage 4+(??) cab so I could level up my Tuning Card so I can have a beast of a car! Too bad I can't just plug in a card reader/writer via USB and just play it on MAME haha, but i'm sure other people would cheat that way. One day... one day i'll own my own WMMT3/IDV4 cab... one day...
you say these are all based on certain consoles, but is it possible to modify them to play games from those consoles? Like could a person use the chihiro to play original xbox games if they wanted?
Seeing the SW20 and RB4 on that game made me want to play it sooo badly xD Edit: It just dawned on me this is related to the manga!! Have you seen the live action film??
You need to get an MVS to JAMMA converter or you'll damage the sound hardware in your JAMMA game, I got mine from jammaboards dotcom and it works great.
Yuzo Koshiro is the king of game music for sure. The only OST I didn't like was Streets of Rage 3. He plagiarized a few songs though in Streets of Rage 2; they're direct rips too not influences. I can't recall the songs but there were 2 and from a British Pop group. Here's a video that demonstrates what influenced Koshiro's Streets of Rage music. Just search TH-cam for OpntMeUjTmc I also didn't know that Midnight game was based on an anime. That explains the very effeminate teen drivers! ;)
Chihiro is an interesting name; sounds like something you would order at Taco Bell. "One Chihiro please with extra hot Lindbergh sauce." lol Seriously though; you're videos enable me to see some relatively rare and obscure stuff which I appreciate. You have a magnificent arcade board collection; I'm guessing you've been contacted by the MAME team a few times at least. The racing game looked interesting if a bit generic. Nothing says manly racing like effeminate portraits of anime teens ;)
I remember seeing a House of the Dead 3 machine stuck on the Chihiro screen at a bowling alley a couple of years ago. Forgot what the error was, though.
8:41 Sega Chihiro Startup Sound.
i saw ghost squad stuck on the chihiro screen. the error said: "Cannot find GD-ROM Drive"
We have Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 2 in our local mall. Sad thing is that the game takes too much time to load though.
Really interesting to hear that the Chihiro hardware was based on the original Xbox. Very cool! Would love to see some gameplay.

yes they did, outrun2/sp did run on the chihiro hardware :)
seriously love this game, every saturday guys were crowded around both of them at sega gameworks in tx. they replaced it with an aquarium. luke likes the trance music. haha

Awesome that you got this working. Ive definitely played that game at the arcades a few times. Didnt know it was Xbox based but that is really cool.
I would never learned about arcade if it wasn't for you Luke! Thanks for sharing!
Yuzo Koshiro made some amazing songs in the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune series.
Outrun 2 certainly. OR2SP uses the Lindbergh, which is a specialty Linux box.
Yeah the capcom IO won't downscale 31khz sadly hence the screwed up screen. I'll have to grab another blast I think for these games, the egret is perfect for low res but a trisync is real handy.
8:41
holy shit maximum tune! i love this game! thats my childhood right there!!!
Great video! The last time, you'd forgotten Outrun 2, and you almost did it this time again, I kept thinking to myself, "is he gonna forget again?".
Good thing you remembered. heh
I would love to see someone make a high quality Ollie King recording on TH-cam sometime with the Chihiro
That whole memory thing is so weird. o_0
Looks awesome....bet it sounds good standing right there too!
What is the AMD chip doing on the mobo??? I find it strange since the orig xbox and this arcade board is Nvidia and Pentium based.
this chip amd is a AU1500 series for network module of shihiro, this is the media board only, the xbox board is bottom
If that music doesn't pump you up and ready to drive, nothing does!
Probably more because Sega had a bunch of GB-ROM drives laying around and it also allowed arcade owners to use some of the same hardware they had from a previous gen. yes it ran on magnetic back cards that saved progress but annoying if the card got damaged as became unreadable
Very cool looking game. Amazing how Sega would base an Arcade machine on original Xbox hardware too. Midnight Maximum is a game I've never seen in the wild. Must be a Japanese only release. Would love to play this someday.
That Maximum tune intro. :D
Nice vid man. Pretty cool seein the game run with the guts exposed. Nice job as always.

Which chihiro is compatible for a virtua cop 3?
I heard of games that wound not work because of to little ram but that's the 1st time I ever heard of an game that wouldn't form too much ram.
With how expensive Naomi hardware was you would think they would have used a more robust mechanism for the GD-ROM drive. It's actually not much different from the one in the Dreamcast.
Do you still have any of your cabinets or did you have to get rid of them?

Anybody know the music at 10:00 ?
Can this game work on the xbox , so far i got virtual cop 3 , outrun 2 and ghost squad running on my 128 mb ram xbox
Chihiro run games other boards sega arcade?
HI, I know it is a long time ago, but you mention that it can run games off a compact flash. Can you tell me how this works please. My GD Rom drive has crapped out. Thanks
And the cartridge ?

That's the Net Dimm (the interface with the gdrom) not the actual system (which is underneath it).

Run with sd card? Can emulate outers consoles?
Neat system never heard of it before. Do these type of systems have a sound test system? Maybe thats how you could listen to some of the in game music.

hi can l use any gd Naomi for out run 2 ??? or l need specific gd rom thank you..
Omg Maximum Tune!! I love that game.
I should be studying for my A+ ...but Maximum Tune.
What's the board to the bottom right of the gd-rom drive?
I saw a Chihiro boot years ago at a place I live decently close to, but I really doubt they still own it. With it being a kids place (Gaddytown. Yup) they probably have every mobile game based touchscreen cabinet imaginable.
love sega hardware. THANKS MAN!
8:40 startup sound
i want to download that sound
Thanks:-)
Both Outrun2 & 2006 are great games :-)
09.52 gets out glow sticks and starts raving
It looks like Neo geo was the only one who got it wright with the arcade machines, all the games run on all the machines, why did all other manufacturers had to make it so damn complicated.
Luke is there à soundtrack of this game, I love the music.
As usual a very interesting and entertaining video but I was always wondering how did you get your TH-cam name "back again Luke"
That is pretty weird that it wont boot up with a gig of ram.
so odd, I thought the Xbox had Intel And Nvidia parts, yet this chihiro board has AMD parts in it, isn't it based on the original xbox?
People have managed to find a way to pull all the data off of a Dreamcast GB-ROM using either the serial or broadband port which is a huge hassle, I can't see the Arcade hardware being any easier. The Sega chihiro can run Outrun2SP and AfterBurner Climax.
Xbox games run on chihiro?
Xbox hardware you say? This furthers my theory that the original xbox is basically the Dreamcast 2 that we've all been waiting for, lol
It takes standard DDR (1) memory, right?
I've always wanted a Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3 / Initial D: Arcade Stage 4+(??) cab so I could level up my Tuning Card so I can have a beast of a car!
Too bad I can't just plug in a card reader/writer via USB and just play it on MAME haha, but i'm sure other people would cheat that way.

*XBOX in the Arcades!* ⭐️
Really great stuff, man! where do you get all this?
That game reminds me a lot of Initial D. Then again, I imagine that was the intent.
I'd like to know where you bought one of these from ? Having trouble finding a whole unit...
I owned a maximum tune 3 game console it's from highway entertainment
Netdim. Yea. Need one of thosr
Sonic on the IO! :P hope you get this one past attract mode, lol
awesome vid homey!
Seeing the SW20 and RB4 on that game made me want to play it sooo badly xD
Edit: It just dawned on me this is related to the manga!! Have you seen the live action film??

I also didn't know that Midnight game was based on an anime. That explains the very effeminate teen drivers! ;)
RAM is very easy to damage. The other one could just be dead that is why you get that error.
Games naomi run on triforce? Games triforce run on chihiro?
Good stuff, Luke!
You should get virtual cop 3 Luke
Chihiro 1 Chihiro 2 version they have xbox motherboard
Awesome !!
For LAN and online. Like an Xbox :)
Awesome
Might be worth installing a switch to disable a bank of RAM saving opening it up all the time.
more like a tribute, if you will
Yeah, this was a great game!
i want one.
Interesting considering the Xbox only had 64MB of ram haha
it´s 100% based at the original xbox... other parts, but the "same" hardware...
What a beast, too bad only a handful of games are actually worth playing...
Chihiro is an interesting name; sounds like something you would order at Taco Bell. "One Chihiro please with extra hot Lindbergh sauce." lol

u wernt kidding man hahaha fuckin beast!!!
I don't like the name Chihiro, lets call it Sen instead.
