Thank you so much for this video. Peeling chestnuts has always been a stress inducing nightmare of trying to salvage the nutmeat stuck inside hard unyielding shells. I just finished peeling about 50 chestnuts and it took maybe 5 minutes. I don’t think scored them all lengthwise or the right depth but he end result was so satisfying. For me, about half the chestnuts had issues with the skin staying on but I’ve found when you use them in a roasted stuffing that skin disappears and doesn’t affect the final product at all. And the happiness of having a whole, skinless nut pop out effortlessly was such a nice thing to behold. Also, using the rubber gloves has a wonderful added benefit for anyone who does get a stubborn chestnut: they prevent hard chestnuts bits going up your fingernails..a miserable torture of Thanksgivings past. My full bowl of shelled chestnuts is prepped..eliminating one of the formerly most unpleasant parts of cooking the meal.

Had the same problem. I suspect that you need to make sure you score all the way through the husk when you're doing that . . . Some worked great, others not so much.
@@stevehorste4636 I have the same problem. When I scored them I made sure to go through both layers, but the inner peal still stayed closed when the outer shell split open. one even split in two and the inner peal was still stuck
Aren't hazlenuts about half the size of chestnuts and a completely different shape? Honestly I'm no cook and certainly no expert so I'm probably wrong.

To be honest, I don't like messing around with water to get at my chestnuts. I love chestnuts so much that I would eat them until I was stuffed with them. I have grappled with peeling them for many, many years, but this year, I tried something different. Instead of using sharp things like knives and scissors, I tried using a small pair of flat-nosed jeweller's pliers. What a saving for my fingers and nails. I gripped an area on the base of the chestnut and gradually nibbled of that husk end. Once that was removed, it was easy to slide the tips of the pliers beneath the skin and pull it off in mabe two or three goes. Of course, I still had to get rid of the furry, brown skin left, but that wasn't too much of a problem. So, if you like what I did, maybe you'd want to give it a try.
Yeah same. Though this time i still had a tough time getting the peel off. Pressed hard enough on the chestnuts to get a blister .3. But the inner peel is much softer after soaking, it does help, and it's not as dangerous haha
Here in 2 days on this friday here in Catalonia we will celebrate a festival called "La Castanyera" in catalan. In this day we especialy eat chest nuts but i am sad because this year is the last one we will celebrate "La Castanyera" because the next grade we will not celebrate it.
The outer shell comes of easily, but the inner peal is realy hard to get off! I never get then as perfect sa in this video and end upp having to use a knife to cut it off.
We've offered our best tips for peeling chestnuts. There are of course some other factors that can influence how likely the inner peel is to stick to the nut. For instance: Age and dryness of the chestnut. Older, drier chestnuts are more likely to have skins that stick to the meat. Freshness is key; the fresher the chestnuts, the easier the skin usually comes off.
My tekkers is remove outer brown skin. Then work in 3 min batches through the steamer. In skin just peels right off. But must work out of the steamer one at a time.
Normally, peeled chestnuts are less flavorful than roasted as they aren't yet cooked. This method just helps you to peel them, if you are intending then to use the raw chestnuts to make flour or in other recipes. Roast them and they taste sweet. I like to roast them in the oven but you can roast them over fire. Be sure to score them and soak them before roasting so the skin comes off easily.
Is there no quick way to just open the chestnuts without all the boiling, heating, and transferring. I don’t care if they’re not whole as I’ll be making them for a chestnut and cream pasta sauce.
Unfortunately, chestnut shells/skin don't just pop off as is the case with some other kinds of nuts. If you aren't looking for raw chestnuts in the end, feel free to check out some of our other English videos @piattorecipes to see if there is a method you prefer to this one. However, all methods for separating chestnuts from their shell/skin require some kind of cooking...

Fra le castagne c'è un tipo la cui pellicina sotto la buccia non si stacca, le davano in pasto ai maiali
Thankyou so much for the tip about the scissors that really helped!

Wow ..they opened nicely. Hope your method will do. Every method i tried before opened my fingures. Will give it another try. Thanks.
It did not work on my chestnuts that I tried today. The inner layer were stuck to the chestnuts. Any reasons?
I was also trying to figure out how to prevent that inner layer from sticking

You we’re probably using hazelnuts instead of chestnuts. That’s what I did.
Aren't hazlenuts about half the size of chestnuts and a completely different shape?

It works. Thanks!!

I wish I’d found this before I murdered my nail beds. 😫

Silly me, I've always boiled them then slicing them after they're cooked. Thanks for the easy instructions.
Me too! That's why I'm here 😅
When I eat them raw I just soak them for 8 hours then they are so easy to peel

Any tips of those of us who haven't gotten it to work? The shell comes right off but the skin is still stuck
Hi Jiaqi, Be sure to cover with the towel while warm and gently press with the palm of your hand to loosen the shells and skins. Hope that helps!
I’ve also found if you’re adding them to stuffing the skin seems to disappear as it cooks and not affect the stuffing.

So che le castagne sono di due tipi.quelle che vengono dall'italia sono la qualita' buona, facile da sbucciare
I have an even better way. Soak chestnuts in water overnight, boil in water, do not cut chestnuts, and peel whilst hot
How long do yo boil them? What do you use to peel?
I tried this and they dont taste that good but they do peel easily

what a drag it is to peel them but not now there is Polenta with them before Indian corn
