What the heck are you talking about!
I am from Italy and chestnuts are broiled on an open fire. The cooker is round about five ft tall. First bottom half is the fire and the top half as a grate where the chestnuts sit and cook, we also throw salt from the top and it gives a salty taste when the salt hits the fire and creates a smoke that goes up thru the nut and gives a nice taste. Keep your oil!

I love chestnuts also. I use a Chestnut knife I bought for $5 it’s great to score them. While my oven is heating to 450 I boil them starting with hot tap water. Then in the oven for 15 minutes 10 to cool and they pop right open.

I’m Portuguese we always do chestnuts every year. Back home we grew them so we had to check all them same way he does make sure the nut is tight to shell and it’s firm. But we just boil our chest nut no cuts at all! For about 25 min or 30 min a kg then just let them soak in that water never take nuts out of water when you take them out you peel so easy and the are sweet and delicious but you gotta know who or where the nuts come from

Dear Joe. Soda is 3/18/24. I had shopped my grocery store frequently in Nov & Dec for chestnuts. Produce staff didn’t know what chestnuts were! What is happening to this world! Instead, I ordered several pounds via mail order & froze them. Today I followed you recipe exactly. They turned out perfect! Thank You! I’m making a large batch of dressing with roasted chestnuts, wild rice & cornbread. I will freeze small batches to accompany pork or chicken dishes. I had researched many videos but yours is MAGNIFICENT! Johnny in Vegas.

I was wondering how to keep the chestnuts I gathered in October for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Did you freeze the peeled or unpeeled? Unpeeled could be used in Joe's recipe.

I think out of all the video tutorials I have watched today, this one might produce the best tasting chestnuts. To be honest, I don't have those childhood memories of roasted chestnuts, I have never tasted one. But our local grocery store had them in and I thought....why not....
I hope I am not disappointed and these live up to all the hype of roasted chestnuts at Christmas time.
    Thank you for sharing.

I love roasted chestnuts , It is a memory from my childhood of being with my mum and buying them in a little paper bag already roasted along with warm sarsaparilla. Mmmm😊We had a Yorkshire range and these would be cooked in the oven , I would knick the outer skins to aid the cooking process.🥰🇬🇧🥰

This was a perfect video today as I was wondering last night how my Nonna used to made these. The story goes that my Sabatini relatives had a chestnut farm in Pistoia.. Sadly there’s no one left to ask about this. But I have looked up information about chestnuts and I am fascinated with the pods. I think they are beautiful so maybe it’s in my blood.

So, Joey, I'm not kidding, my chestnut trees are producing and I'm in compitition with the squirrels! So, I get home from work today and let my dog out, he's got a squirrel trapped in one of my chestnut trees. I run over there and start yelling at the squirrel to drop the nut and we'll let him go. He's running around in the tree with this chestnut in his mouth and finally stops and drops the nut at my feet! and yep, there was one of the three that was good! Tooooo funnny! So, anyways, I'm getting my nuts as they drop and they are not dried, so I don't need to soak them, but the wine is a great idea for flavor. I love getting food that our Lord provides! God Bless you and yours!

I’m thinking your kid just got home and he’s about to force an edit on your video. Awesome method can’t wait to try it. If you like things more savory I’m curious what if the soaking liquid is a bit more of a light brine with some salt and a little brown sugar? Still finishing with the butter. How do you think that might work out? I usually like my nuts on the salty side, wait what?

Love the video. Just one thing - the reverb. You need a better mic setup. I would assume that you're not trying to show off how big your kitchen is, but the booming echo of your voice in the room is a bit of a distraction. Now that that's out of the way, this video makes me want to go out and get some. It's been many years since I had chestnuts "roasting" on an open fire.

Good video. Sadly this guy talks waaaay too much and a lot of it is unnecessary. Here's the quick recap.
    1-check/get rid of spoiled chestnuts.
2- rins/dry chestnuts and then make a middle cut with a knife.
3-soak chestnuts for 30 in water.
4- take them out and place them in frying pan and throw in some butter and toast em.
    Done.
