Thank You Jason!! I was so frustrated when my Ryobi lawn mower just randomly shut down & then wouldn't start at all! I was trying to make sense of the electrical drawings & had started to take the damn thing apart when my wife said, "Have you checked TH-cam?". 5 minutes later you had shown me how to fix it. People like you make the world a better place. Seriously. Thanks again!
I knew it had to be some sort of contact switch causing my brand new mower to cut off everytime i come to an end and lift the mower to make another pass, my 4 year old 40 volt ryobi cordless mower is beat to death & never once had this problem , i got 6 mows out of my new 40 volt mower & it started this shit , i planned on putting it on the work bench & following the wiring harness connections but my mother passed away & i havent had time or even gave a F to even look at the mower , sitting here thinking of a list of things i need while im at home depot got me thinking about the Ryobi mower problem & your video solved my problem , it took me all of 4 minutes to tighten those screws & now the mower dont cut off no matter how rough i threat it , thank you brother .
Thanks, man. I had been buying several batteries a year and it seemed like they would last only for two charges then the mower would shut down every three seconds. I figured I would buy a new battery and a new charger, thinking that the charger could be the problem. This morning, I put in the brand new battery and the mower was still shutting down after three seconds of use. That was the first time it had ever done that on a brand new battery. I then knew that it was an issue with the mower. I watched this video, then unscrewed the bolt off and applied strong tape to the red button to hold it down. The mower started running smoothly again. Thanks again!
Another fix: in my case the screws were tight. Between the handle and the mower you can see the red button that needs to be pressed in. I slid a credit card (expired) between the button and the handle to push the button in even more - and that fixed it. Inspired by this video - thank you.
Same symptoms for me but different problem; mine seemed to be in the latch where you extend the handles. Mine I believe is a slightly newer model than the one in the video and there's no contact "buttons" or anything else like that exposed so I just loaded it up with wd40 and all is well now.
Ryobi should seriously pay you. Nice, nice camera work and efficient tutorial. Since this appears to be a common issue, vibration is likely a factor. In that case, removing those bolts and applying loctite blue thread locker (not the red in this application) would likely prevent a future event. Thanks again for the awesome video and helping so many people.
I had the same problem, but the switch had failed and no amount of shims or force would make it work. The easy fix was to pop the switch out of the mower with a putty knife. I pulled the wires off and hooked them up to an automotive blade type fuse. Dropped them back down the hole and put the now disabled switch back in its hole. Yes, I bypassed one (IMHO, redundant) safety feature... but it still requires a two step process to start.
You are awesome! Here I went and recommended this lawnmower to a buddy and we were both having the same issues. Honestly, thank you for taking the trouble to help everybody out here. Thumbs up!
Thank you so much! As much as I wanted to stop mowing the grass I’m sure my wife would have been upset if she had to look at the Amazon forest another day! Simply fix! Really appreciate your insight!
This was just what I needed. In my case, the bolts were nice and tight but the metal framework that the red button is mounted on was bent ever so slightly inward. 5 taps with a hammer on the metal frame and I am back in business. Thank you!
Same problem we are having with our lawn mower. Looks like an easier fix than the last video I viewed. I will give this a try. Thanks for taking the time to share this information.
I almost went to the store today to get a new one, and naturally they're over $150 more than when I bought this one. Gonna go home and give this a try first! Thanks man
Thank you so very much for the video, but that was not the reason for my issue. Because of your video, I began to look at my lawn mower and discovered that on the right side where the handle fits into the metal bracket, there was a gap. I applied your fix, but the bolts you showed were tight. Nonetheless, I decided to check on the bolts attaching the brackets to the mower. They were extremely loose. After tightening these screws, everything went back in place and now I am able to use my mower. Had you not posted your video, I would not have discovered the problem. Once again, thank you so very much.
I was very excited to try this. It turns out it was tightly screwed already. But, I noticed you kept taking the key out. My key was loose and now the machine works. Thank you! Who knew?
Yes!! Thanks, but tightening would not solve my problem. I pushed a shim single between the handle and the red button and fixed... Might look into replacing the switch if it starts happening again.
Mine has some kind of special design on the bolt that can't be adjusted easily, but this video helped me realize that I just didn't have the handle extended and locked down properly. It kept dying on the curves, and just adjusting the locks stopped the problem! Thanks for the video - saved me a bunch of money!
This saved me from throwing out my Ryobi and paying $300-$400 for a new one. My Ryobi lawnmower had been shutting on and off for months, so frustrating. For me it wasn't even the bolts on the side as they were still on tight...it was the red fuse thingy! It was more than half way out and very loose. I pushed it back in and no more shutting on and off. Thank you!
Wow! You showed me exactly what I needed to know. From reading the comments, it appears you have saved a lot of people a lot of time and money. I can't thank you enough for the service you provided. I hope you make a fortune from TH-cam.
Thanks for the video! Mine was cutting off, but the bolts were plenty tight. With the handle folded down, I pressed and released the button about a dozen times. Must have cleaned the contacts because it ran fine after that.
I had called a recitfied Ryobi repair palce. If they hadn't told me it would be 30 days for them to look at it, I would have probably taken it down there. Instead, I watched your video. My fix was as simple as yours. THANKS !!
Jason, you are great. Thanks. I have a new Ryobi that stopped after 6 mows. I did as you suggested and tightened T 30 bolts. Also made sure the extension handle was solidly locked. Like new again. Love your style too.
Thanks, mate. I have put off mowing my lawn for like 2 months because it kept turning off and on again. Saved me the hassle to take it into a shop. I was super annoyed because my mower is only like a year old.
You're a life saver. Or a lawn saver anyway. This was exactly the problem I was having on my 1st lawn cut of the season today (I'm in Canada) and your video absolutely nailed it. Works like a charm now. I had no idea there was a momentary switch on the side there actually. LOL
Thank you SO much for this video -- you saved me so much money & frustration (because I would have schlepped the thing to a lawnmower repair place, clueless). I can't tell you how much I appreciate your generosity with your knowledge!
Dude. Í was so upset thinking my lawnmower only lasted a season and a half. By the end of the night it wouldn't even start! Tightened the screw and bam I was in business again and finished my yard (in the dark!). Thanks!
this is great information! i pulled my mower out last week and it wouldn't turn on at all. last year it would shut off on me like it was in this video. i'm going to try this and hopefully it works. thank you!
Just wanted to say thanks. From watching your video the key word at the beginning made me think to check the key. Sure enough it had vibrated enough to come undone.
Thanks for the video. I've had my lawn mower for 2 years without any issues and when it randomly started shutting off (and knew there was nothing wrong with the batteries) I was thinking it would need maintenance. I found out the bar was just a bit loose which I guess was triggering the automatic shut-off.
my bolts weren't loose but it was definitely the button that was causing the issue for me. slapped a piece of tape on it and it worked like a charm. thanks for the video!
my mower was even starting this morning thought i needed to have it repaired my t40 screws weren't that loose but I tightened them and mower is running great again thanks
I had the same issue, thought switch for my lawnmower seemed to have malfunctioned. I ended up disconnecting the wires from the switch and splicing the connected wires together. I don't recommed this to everyone as that is a safety switch to prevent improper use, but it has done the job for me.
Definitely not recommended. But that saftey switch main purpose is to prevent the blade from spinning when handle bar is not in full up right position. There is still a safety switch on handle bar for mower unattended.
Had this problem awhile ago for my lawn, this video helped me fix it. lol sorry for the late thank you. Looking up ryobi lawn mowers and this video popped up and remembered it.
Great Video mate. Would not have thought of that by myself. Also a problem on the 18 volt models. You saved me taking the mower apart looking for a loose connection
Thank you! I had a different model I guess, that didn’t have bolts for me to tighten. But I adjusted the brackets and sure enough one of them was off line and the handle wasn’t completely tight. Once I did that, everything works great! I can’t even tell you how much of a help you’ve been! Thank you!
Thank you so much man! My lawnmower did this when it was 6 years old. I was almost going to have to buy a new lawnmower. But I'm going to try this and hopefully it works!
Same symptoms for me, and the same culprit. Put a shim between the handle and switch and tried mowing; worked without fail. Removed shim, problem came back. Put shim back, problem went away. Will be tightening handle to permanently fix it.

Dude, you just saved me a lot of frustration. Woman just gave me one of these that had been sitting out for 2 years. I got a replacement key and already had batteries from my other equipment for it and when I went to test it it started this shit. First hit on Google and it works. 5 years almost to the day.
I have the next model up and couldnt figure it out. My model doesnt have the switch....but your video did make me take a closer look and i found that a dried blade of grass was blocking one of the contacts so itd shut off exactly like yours did. Once i cleared the grass it works like normal.
you're a craftmaster and a solver. I salute you, thanks. but.. shouldn't Ryobi build and test a mower without rickety design flaws before they take their customers money?
Thank you! I have tried everything except considering that part. This mower has been a pain in the neck ever since I got it. But I have managed to figure out most of the problems except this one. LOL!
ok so i have a newer model, NO bolts, *however* ! this vid still helped me cuz i looked for loose stuff and found something. --> one of the little bright green turns wasn't in the same position as another on the handle. THE PROBLEM: apparently, one arm of the extendy/collapsing handle wasn't latched and so that was what fixed me. i just collapsed handle, re-secured latches and presto! 👍 lawn: DONE. (and about time, too, i was about to get a citation lol)
Great job on this. My Ryobi did the same thing but it was due to the switch being faulty and I bypassed the switch as shown on another youtube video on this subject. Stupid of Ryobi not to spend 20 cents more on a reliable safety switch. Thanks.
Great video my issue ended up being not fully extending and locking the handle. This happened on my first time using the mower guess I should have read the instructions and the big label on the handle that reads “must be fully extended and locked”
Saving peoples minds almost 4 years later. THANK YOU. Was exactly the issue with mine and it's stupid that it's not in the troubleshooting
saving people's minds *5yrs* later! (if this fix works for me. about to go try it.)
6 Years!
I just found this for my dad because ours was doing the same thing. He wanted me to thank you. You're his buddy now. Thanks so much!
No problem I am glad I was able to help
Thank you for your help through this video.
My older Ryobi mower is running again.
This was a 2 minute fix! Hugely appreciated...Especially since NOBODY will service a cordless Ryobi in my area!
I am glad it worked out for you, and thanks for taking the time out to check out the video 📹
Holy cow. I’d dint even that switch exists! Thanks so much! Gonna try that tomorrow after work.
Thank you so much! My husband wanted to buy a new one because he didn't know how to fix it. You saved me the cost of a new lawn mower. Thanks!
Iam glad it worked out for you. And I completely understand how there's never enough time un a day
This is one reason why I love TH-cam videos. This video from 4 years ago just saved me $250. Had the exact same issue. Watched the video; FIXED!
Glad it worked out for you. And thanks for stopping by
Thanks, man. I had been buying several batteries a year and it seemed like they would last only for two charges then the mower would shut down every three seconds. Gald it worked out for you, and thanks for checking out the video
I just did this with an old Caesars Palace players card 😂 and then mowed my entire lawn on a half charged battery! Thank you so much!!!
Same symptoms for me but different problem; mine seemed to be in the latch where you extend the handles. Mine I believe is a slightly newer model than the one in the video and there's no contact "buttons" or anything else like that exposed so I just loaded it up with wd40 and all is well now.

Yay! Figured it out. Mine was the latch wasn't shut on the arm, but same issue. It was hitting the on/off button. THANK YOU!
Thanks brother. You just made my day and saved me the headache and money of getting the mower repaired.
I had the same problem, but the switch had failed and no amount of shims or force would make it work. The easy fix was to pop the switch out of the mower with a putty knife. After 5 years your post is still relevant . Thanx Bro .
Thanks for the support, much appreciated.
You are awesome! Here I went and recommended this lawnmower to a buddy and we were both having the same issues. Honestly, thank you for taking the trouble to help everybody out here. Thumbs up!
Awesome! Now can you post a video to tell me where that bolt fell off in my yard?
Thank you so much! As much as I wanted to stop mowing the grass I’m sure my wife would have been upset if she had to look at the Amazon forest another day! Simply fix! Really appreciate your insight!
haha just doing our part to "green the earth" 🤣 (just mowed my jungle today........ it was almost a new ecosystem)
Thank you as well! Was on the phone with Home Depot quite awhile when I found out my warranty was expired. hung up, and googled this video and wa-lla!
This was just what I needed. In my case, the bolts were nice and tight but the metal framework that the red button is mounted on was bent ever so slightly inward. 5 taps with a hammer on the metal frame and I am back in business. Thank you!
Great vid bro, how you figured this out beats me
I have the newer model and they still have issues with safety interlocks. This video helped me a lot.
Same problem we are having with our lawn mower. Looks like an easier fix than the last video I viewed. I will give this a try. Thanks for taking the time to share this information.

I was very excited to try this. It turns out it was tightly screwed already. But, I noticed you kept taking the key out. My key was loose and now the machine works. Thank you! Who knew?
that was the exact problem i was having thanks for the quick vid!
Yes!! Thanks, but tightening would not solve my problem. I pushed a shim single between the handle and the red button and fixed... Might look into replacing the switch if it starts happening again.

Neighbor? I am glad it worked out
Thanks for the video! Mine was cutting off, but the bolts were plenty tight. With the handle folded down, I pressed and released the button about a dozen times. Must have cleaned the contacts because it ran fine after that.
Thank you so much, we had to press and release the button a few times too, and now it works again, finally!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for this! We had the exact same issue and when we pressed the button repeatedly, it worked!
That was driving me crazy and Ryobi had no idea why. Thank you !!!!

It took me longer to find the right tool than to fix this issue after watching your video. Thank you for the tip.
Thanks for watching glad it worked out for you

Morgaine Roberts keep me updated please
Did it fixed your problem?
This didn’t fix mine but still gave a thumbs up because this is great knowledge to have for the future! Thanks for posting!
+1 for this fix. Saved me from tearing the whole thing apart searching for a loose internal connection.
DUDE!!!! Literally watched this before I pulled the trigger on buying a new mower. Thanks!
Thanks very much. This really should be in the troubleshooting section of the manual.
Yeah they didn’t test the product well did they
Our bolts were tight and ended up pressing the button repeatedly several times and that made the mower stay on. Thank you for this video!
Just wanted to say thanks. From watching your video the key word at the beginning made me think to check the key. Sure enough it had vibrated enough to come undone.
I didn't use this fix but it put me in the right direction as in to look for something simple and I found it, yay. The 'key' had worked itself loose.
No problem thanks for watching
Thanks for the video. I've had my lawn mower for 2 years without any issues and when it randomly started shutting off (and knew there was nothing wrong with the batteries) I was thinking it would need maintenance. I found out the bar was just a bit loose which I guess was triggering the automatic shut-off.

5 years later! Solved my problem. Thank you for doing this video!
Thanks for watching
thank you! to the point, no annoying chit chat. I appreciate you.
Thank you so much for creating this video. You showed me exactly what the problem was and how to fix it. Worked like a charm!
Yep, I got this mower in ‘21. I’ve learned to just tighten those screws at the beginning of every yard-cutting season
my mower was even starting this morning thought i needed to have it repaired my t40 screws weren't that loose but I tightened them and mower is running great again thanks
Glad it worked out thanks for watching

Thanks Ryobi god! Such simple things try to ruin your day and you bring the sunshine! Cheers mate!
Cheers
OMG I needed this like 3 weeks ago. Thank you for helping me fix my mower. I was about to buy another one. Stupid switch!!
Thank you! Mine was a T40 torx though and it was rather loose and fixed it instantly. Thank you again!
Thanks for the tip! My mower's bolts weren't lose but repeatedly pressing & releasing that button fixed the problem. Take care.
Had this problem awhile ago for my lawn, this video helped me fix it. lol sorry for the late thank you. Looking up ryobi lawn mowers and this video popped up and remembered it.
Thanks - you are awesome! I was just researching warranty info when I found your video. Such an easy fix compared to taking it in to a repair shop.
Thank you so much. I thought I had to purchase a new mower and all it was what you showed! Thanks you!
No problem thanks for watching
Great Video mate. Would not have thought of that by myself. Also a problem on the 18 volt models. You saved me taking the mower apart looking for a loose connection
Thank you! I had a different model I guess, that didn’t have bolts for me to tighten. But I adjusted the brackets and sure enough one of them was off line and the handle wasn’t completely tight. Once I did that, everything works great! I can’t even tell you how much of a help you’ve been! Thank you!
Thank you!! I didn't know about the hidden star/stop button and now it finally works!!
Alex Krasnohorsky no problem I am glad it worked out for you
Thank you so much man! My lawnmower did this when it was 6 years old. I was almost going to have to buy a new lawnmower. But I'm going to try this and hopefully it works!
Thank you! I just paid $20 for one because it did that. This worked. Now it's like new. The battery alone was worth $70
Thought my mower was broken (just bought it last month) thanks for saving my headache
Thank you so much for helping me solve this very irritating problem! Such a simple fix!
No problem thanks for watching
Same symptoms for me, and the same culprit. Put a shim between the handle and switch and tried mowing; worked without fail. Removed shim, problem came back. Put shim back, problem went away. Will be tightening handle to permanently fix it.
I know many people have posted this but THANK YOU, wow! I have a different model and that did the trick! You are awesome 👍
No problem glad it worked out. Thanks for watching 👀
Holy crap thank you! I was about to get a new lawn mower and saw this!!!
Wow - this did the trick. At first the mower would cut off when turning. Then it would hardly run at all. This was the fix I needed!
You just saved me from buying a new one! Thank you, and well done Sir!
Glad it worked out and thanks for watching
Thank you Jason, I figured out what was wrong with my mower because of your video.
Let me go try this right now. My mower shut down after taller grass and a rough ride. This is likely the culprit, after trying several other known trouble-shooting techniques. I swtiched back to to gas (Toro), but will sell my Ryobi or keep as a backup if I can get it going again. Thank you!
No problem thanks for watching
Thanks so much for this. It was driving me nuts. Had to use an old school push mower to finish my lawn. Should have seen this first!
Dude, you just saved me a lot of frustration. Woman just gave me one of these that had been sitting out for 2 years. I got a replacement key and already had batteries from my other equipment for it and when I went to test it it started this shit. First hit on Google and it works. 5 years almost to the day.

Good job! Mine is brand new out of the box and right away it started doing this. Easy enough fix! Thanks!
OMG I'm so glad to find you. I had the problem too and was about to find a new mower. Can't wait to try to fix it like you did right now.
you're a craftmaster and a solver. I salute you, thanks. but.. shouldn't Ryobi build and test a mower without rickety design flaws before they take their customers money?
Yeah....them and every other freakin' company in the world! Good quality is practically a thing of the past!
Its simply cheap chinese design and mfg....
Tor
Thank you!! This fixed my issue immediately. It's been so frustrating. Very appreciative!
No problem, thanks for watching
You are great. Been pulling my hair out trying to find the problem!
No problem, thanks for watching

Great job on this. My Ryobi did the same thing but it was due to the switch being faulty and I bypassed the switch as shown on another youtube video on this subject. Stupid of Ryobi not to spend 20 cents more on a reliable safety switch. Thanks.
Professional presentation ... great attitude (by not screaming at the tool and placing blame) ... thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you! Mine was stalling because one of the handle locks had come undone.
Dude thank you. 😅 it’s been driving me crazy since last year. So simple yet didn’t find it. 😮 thank you again.
Thanks a lot! Was able to help a neighbor out thanks to your video.
Great video my issue ended up being not fully extending and locking the handle. This happened on my first time using the mower guess I should have read the instructions and the big label on the handle that reads “must be fully extended and locked”
Thanks man! I can't believe that worked! I sent a message to the guy who sold me the mower and has to write and take it back!
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge! Can't wait to head home and try this out!
Worked exactly as you showed. Didn't have the right torx driver so I had to jam a flat-blade screwdriver in to tighten it.
Oh my, the video is 6 years old and the issue remains still in 2024. Thanks, you helped.
It's like they're trying to make a bad name for themselves
