Ryobi 40V battery fail, Master Reset!!!

  • My low use Ryobi 40v battery showed an error and would not charge. I searched all over the web looking for a fix. I came across several youTube videos that were similar to my case. I tried them but no success. Finally I tried one last time with a simple variation and it worked. 40v battery is now working like new. My battery may have been a newer or later model then the others with a slight change in the reset procedure.

Just one tip for those watching, buy the Security Torx bits. If you buy the regular torx, you'll be highly disappointed as it won't fit.

Great video; this worked! Two notes: 1. Might mention that "dummy plug" just covers the fourth screw. 2. On older Ryobi 40V batteries, look for 3V GND and RST. They are in a different place on older motherboards. I noticed you jumped "RST" and the lone contact next to it. My "RST" was down in the corner among many others. Right next to "RST" was "3VGND" or something like that. Jumping RST to that did the reset. BTW, On one battery I didn't need to push the button to reset it; it went on its own as soon as the jumper connected. Overall, you saved me some money on multiple batteries. All work now. Thanks!

It works BUT..... Those who have batteries cast aside years ago because of "defective" signal may find it takes a bit more work to bring these back... Mine was two years old when it died and had sat for another two years before I found about this hack to fix it. All went as described EXCEPT when I touched the reset and hole next to it, no lights. Nada. I had to push the button while the jump was in place to get the row of lights to come on and stay on (instead of blink) . But that was only the first step. When I placed the battery on the charger, it only charged for a few seconds before flashing "defective" again. I repeated this many times. Reset, charge, fail.... reset charge fail. But each time the normal charge light blinked green a little longer. Finally about the 10th reset, the lights on the battery came on by themselves when I did the jump. First time that had happened. And when it went back on the charger, it finally behaved normally. No defective green/red combo. So apparently had to get enough juice back into it for the reset the actually work. So be persistant. I have no idea how long this battery will last given these issues. But just be aware this may be an issue on older batteries in a low charge state.

@@mikewelpott8743 Sadly this proved a temporary fix for me. It worked but the battery would only partially charge (one light). And would only run my mower for a few minutes. It died altogether after a few uses. But it had been dead for a LONG time before this resurrection attempt. So perhaps you will have better results.

My update. No go. I tried at least 30 to 40 times. At least 5 times the lights would illuminate when I jumped the pads, so my hopes were increased, but no luck. I am very thankful for your report of success. It is such a wast to throw away a perfectly good battery that is not working. Todays electronics have many fail safes and are designed to lock out the consumer. I am sure some batteries will not revert back to working properly. However some are just a software glitch that needs to be reset, like many things in today's world of tech. I too watched many TH-camrs videos with out success . Fantastic. Everyone in the family was amazed that I fixed it. 😀I didn't need to hold the button. It flashed one upon reset. But this will happen again. That's the best part of your video and the bonus tip. I have a lineup similar to yours with 6 batteries. BTW, I had 2 dummy plugs. After trying to pry them from the edge I realized the best method was to use a small head Phillips and maul them through the middle while twisting. Within 30 seconds that enabled enough leverage to yank them out.

Thank you for this video! I had a 40v battery for my leaf blower that showed a fault. I took it apart and cleaned off some mild surface corrosion and tested the voltages for every series and they were good, but still wouldn't charge. Thanks a lot Sir. Your technique worked with my 40V 5AH Ryobi battery which was out of warranty. The only difference with my battery was, when I connected the reset terminals, all the 4 lights momentarily flashed once. I did not have to press the battery indicator button at that time. Now the battery is charging perfectly as before. Prior to the reset, whenever I pressed the battery indicator all the lights were flashing but it was not charging. The charger was flashing green and red lights which indicated defective battery. After the reset procedure, the problem of not charging is fixed.

Thank you so much for this video! Saved me a lot of money for a new 40v battery. It took me half a day to figure out how to remove the "dummy plug" (that's me! ha, ha!) but after that it took a few seconds to reset the battery. I used a pair of fine pointed tweezers to bridge the two little reset buttons and it worked great. The battery is on its way to a full charge. Thanks again.

Thanks, it worked. I used a staple I bent to reset. The light did flash when I did the reset. It might have been good to go at that point but I went ahead and pressed the side button too where the 4 lights lit.
I put it back together and my charger worked and fully charged my battery again.

Are you really sure you want to try this, and are you really ready and willing to accept all responsibility for trying this? Thanks for watching.

I came across your video while actually searching for how to “discharge” my 40V RYOBI that had also become unusable, blinking Yellow/Green on charger. I was thinking I might overcome the issue by fully discharging the battery pack. However, after watching your video, I decided to try your second method for resetting the battery (jump & press battery button). Luckily, all I needed to do was the first method (jumping the circuit) to reset the battery. Nevertheless, I appreciate your video for revealing both fixes. It’s nice to have a backup method if In encounter the issue again. The battery was down to one bar but it charged up without error and now works as good as before. Thanks!

Dude, thank you very much. I recently purchased a ryobi string trimmer at a yard sale really cheap because the owner couldn't get the battery out. I got it home and sure enough that battery was in there good. I decided maybe I could take it apart and get it out. Well that didn't help much because once I opened it up there was still this cage around d the battery lol. Finally I was able to fish my little 6in. Scale between the lach and the battery and I had to wack on the cage with the scale in place and it moved so I knew I had it at that point. Either as a practical joke or accident someone had gotten Glue on the battery and it was Glued in place. Once I got it out it was behaving like the one in you demo, so hopefully it will work once I follow your instructions. Which I will do at my own risk not because you suggested it or anything because you did not. You said not to do it unless I was qualified. So if anything were to happen it's Not on you my friend!🤠👍🙋‍♂️

Incredible. In an ideal country of honor in our product design and not planned obsolescence greed, we'd have an external reset button to bridge these two and press power. Even official steps in the manual for such a process. But I'm thankful it works and it's still not terribly difficult to reset.
Mine actually flashed when I just touched the two for the reset - labeled RST.
Working! Probably just varies per revision or model of these batteries, if yours doesn't automatically blink on RST bridging, press the power button at the same time.
Had to use a real thin safety pin, took some wire clippers to one end. Tiny little RST holes, discouragement of that easy fix reset every step of the way hah.
You know I wonder how many of these batteries Ryobi takes in and merely resets, bam refurbished.
