Got my P950 last fall and have had good results. I've seen my brother with his "Professional" Cannon and enough lenses to give bigfoot a hernia. Haven't been able to get out much, but looking forward to cooler weather to go exploring.

I just got back into biking, just casual biking along country back roads. Every now and then I stop to take a photo, be it landscapes, buildings, wildlife, birds. Admittedly it's very easy to pull out the phone to take a landscape or building photo. But today, for instance, when I stopped for a water break, I spotted a palm Warbler flitting around about 35, 40 feet away. I pulled my Nikon B700 from my bike bag and got some nice close up shots of it. A little further down the road I saw a pond covered in water lillies. Got the Nikon again, and got a nice photo of one isolated lilly among many lilly pads. Some miles further on, I saw some deer in the road ahead. I pulled an old Olympus SZ-10 out of my handlebar bag and again got some decent shots I wouldn't have been able to get with my phone. The bird at 1320mm, the lilly at 1100mm, the deer with the SZ-10 at 440mm. I also took some macros with the B700. Now, none of these photos will ever grace the cover of National Geographic, but in my opinion they look pretty decent, and are good enough to share on social media. What other type of camera can be so versatile and be as compact and it would need half a dozen lenses to capture the same sort of things? I know I'm not going to lug around various expensive lenses for the type of shooting I do. It's a real shame these cameras are disappearing , and when they're completely gone it will leave a substantial hole in common folk outdoor photography.

Luckily I bought a P1000 fairly recently, although I'm still on a steep learning curve on how to get really crisply focused pictures and video. I know it's never going to compare to high end separate body + lens combinations, and requires quite a bit of light on the subject, but I'm hoping I can improve my image quality with it eventually. Interesting info on your video. 👍

Thanks for the video, Stafford. I own a P950 and love it for birding. As you stated, a smartphone is simply not adequate for birding and wildlife photography. The P950 has its limitations but I did not spend $10-20k for a camera and lenses.

I kinda want to see a PnS with features like sensor shift hi res mode or dual readout like panasonic g9ii. PnS tends to also have leaf shutter so we can sync flash at all shutter speed and the less shallow depth of field is useful in my case of photography. I hope they kept innovating even though it means they'll only release more expensive camera in the future.

Sadly I think you're right. I have an old p900 and even though I have a z50 with a 150-600 lens I dearly love my p900. I've picked up a used b700 which is a nice smaller alternative. Shoots RAW, 20 mp, and has I think about a 1400mm reach. I hope to pick up a used p950 because I never want to be without that ability of the incredible zoom these cameras give us.

Hey bud. Thanks for the content keep it up
In a world were point and shoots aren't dead, and if we could get a Nikon P950mII (p960?)O my wishlist would include USBC charging, UHSII cards for all the 4k120 or FHD240 video.
For stills, bigger buffer and 2024 level autofocus. Same sensor size would be fine but mabe as 5years have passed we get faster readout and quicker processor in the body. Maybe the menus wouldn't lock up during buffer clear, and maybe I'd get more than 7 shot bursts. Then ideally an OVF and Screen update. Touchscreen for focussing and menus would be nice but not a deal breaker.
Until then I'll keep the p950 until it dies. Have taken some of my best wildlife shots with it.

I have an old Nikon Coolpix P7100. It's really old and has a CCD censor but it shoots raw and takes fantastic images. I also have a Sony ZV1, which is geared toward video but it takes pretty good still images. My only other pocketable camera is the Nikon Coolpix A but it has a fixed lens but it is capable of making beautiful images. Older P&S cameras are still quite good.

I bought a P1000 a few years ago and even then it was hard to find, the P950 was just releasing and had very similar performance in a significantly smaller and lighter platform. I understand and respect that. However, even back then I thought the P1000 was very special and there may never be another camera quite like it.
I think superzooms are the perfect niche for point and shoot, and I still consider getting myself a little A1000 or equivalent at some point.

Apparently P&S cameras are having a renewal with the younger kids, at least on eBay. We'll see if that translates into anything over the next few years, but I think the cellphone has introduced photography to many and those that grow in the art will grow in terms of the tools they use.
Plus there is a rumor the P1000's replacement is coming next along with the Z50ii and perhaps the Z9ii or a Z90.

I have a P1000 and enjoy it on a sturdy tripod with a fluid pan head. It's just too bulky to hike with so for that I carry a Canon Sx60HS. The Canon's internal battery is failing so it needs to have quick battery swaps - otherwise it looses all it's settings including date/time.
Been thinking of replacing it with a P950 while they're still available.

Hi Stafford, I thought for a long time that most of the point and shoots are dead. Interestingly, at one time I had both the P950 and RX10 as well as my SONY mirrorless. In the end I dumped the RX10 because the zoom at 600mm competed with my SONY A74 which gave much better results. The RX10 gave me no extra capability The P950 gave me a reach that the RX10 could not neither could the SONYs and I use it to complement my SONY 200-600 mm telephoto. The extreme superzoom bridge cameras should be the only survivors because they occupy a niche which nothing else can.

You should look into buying one of those clips-on tele-extenders advertised for phones on TH-cam,. you know, the ones professional photographers are buying so they can dump their pro gear (space for extreme sarcasm here). Just kidding but it would be interesting to publish the results, comparing one of those to some of your pro gear results just to make the point and another video. Has the Lumix FZ1000 Mk 2 been discontinued? I have the Leica version and it's a very good travel camera. If you use the I-Zoom feature in the menu it will extend to 800mm's from 25mm's and still provide good results with its one-inch sensor.

Strange I think they are not long for the world but that could be just me. Hopefully I am wrong as the Fz cameras are really nice. I use to have the FZ300 and really liked the bokeh i could get at 600mm f2.8 a nice touch for a P&S.
