- Hi Everyone, Today we replace the battery in our 2004 Porsche 996 Turbo X50. It was a fantastic opportunity to test out my new Solar BA5 Battery Tester. The battery that is in the car is several years old and is weeping acid. The Solar confirmed it was on its way out. For the battery change I use an OBDII memory saver which allows us to power the car’s un-switched power circuits during the battery swap so there is no memory loss in any of the computer modules. Super easy to use and saves lots of time!

You gave a very good learning experience. I have a 19-Rogue & before calling Nissan Road Svc, I did disconnect the terminals and cleaned, although they looked like new. I'm sure Sam'sClub Mechanic did not use a OBDII as I did not either not knowing this. I was nervous with the Pos-terminal. For the future will remember to use Rubber Glove to cover. That was very good advice. Thanks for this excellent view on changing a battery and staying safe.😃

No, it was not dirty at all. I just noticed she didn't mention to clean the battery compartment in the video. I have been taught to do so, probably to make sure there's no battery fluid down there.
+Freerk de Ruiter you are totally right! I should have at least wiped it down a bit. The tray on our Boxster was all rusted because the PO didn't service the battery and it leaked all over. Porsche has a removable/replaceable tray for the battery so I was able to clean and repaint it... That is why, even if that battery was still staying the car, I wanted it out. Franny

Swapped the battery in my 05 tts without the obd tool with no problem. Made a huge difference on startup.

I have used the cigarette lighter power port for keeping the memory alive when disconnecting the battery for service and such. Just have to remember that power is still there on the positive throughout the car.
I would have liked to see the new battery tested to compare with the old battery results. Then a new battery startup also to compare with the old battery start up. Good attention to detail as always!
Sorry about that! That would have been a good thing to include. I did test it and it was over 1000CA. But that was on a complete full charge. That battery didn't spec CA or CCA! Funny, just 70Ah. I did show it start at the very end. Before it sounded labored... It would usually start, but if it sat for more than a couple weeks then it would have to be on the tender.

Great video; Costco Interstate batteries FTW! For the future the cap to plug off the vent opposite of the one you are using is included and attached to the red positive terminal cover on the battery. It just snaps off the corner.
Christopher Tice Yup! You are absolutely right! Totally missed that :) Funny thing about that battery is that they don't publish CA or CCA... Just the 70Ah. I looked all over and couldn't find any more specs. I think the Solar meter came up with a 1000CA ish... Thanks for the tip! F

Great video. I would have worn eye protection (batteries do explode--rare, but it happens). Also, I like to use a Schumacher BAF-BI Terminal Cleaning Brush on the terminals and clamps, followed by contact cleaner spray on both.
We try to be safe. Sometimes we forget the glasses.
As always I really enjoy these videos, I look forward to seeing what you are up to and understanding more about my 2004 996tt as well. I was wondering if you hooked up the Solar meter once again to see if you get the rated cranking amps indicated on the battery. Of course, you'd have to run the car for a bit to get it fully charged. The voltage would also be interesting. Great work. Every thought of changing your plugs. I'd really like that one. My local mechanic wants over $1200 CDN to do the job. I'd prefer to do it my self.
Michael it’s Heidi. I can answer that. Our 996 Turbo has hit 60K or close to that. We do have to do a brake flush and also the plugs. The plugs are a PITA, because of how you have to access them (which is why your mechanic wants the amount you quoted). We will get to it, I am just not sure when yet. Hopefully this winter sometime. If you urgently need to do it on your car, I recommend dealing with it soon whether you or your mechanic does it.
Outstanding except I wish you would have shown your secondary battery connection to the OBD2.
Hi Franny, love the videos. I am about to replace my battery on my 997. Would a trickle charger in the cigarette lighter also work to keep the ECU's ON while replacing the battery?
OBD2, not ODB2. :) Good and helpful video. Thank you for emphasizing that the positive battery terminal is live when an external 12V source is connected. You can also use your car's 12V / cigarette lighter socket if it is always live (some are, some aren't).

There are also some, especially vintage, positive ground cars - remember to reverse the disconnect / connect order for those for obvious reasons mentioned !
Ps: careful cheapskates can also simply connect power to the connectors with proper isolation without having to buy an extra adapter device, ...

I was thinking about the same thing. Could simply running a jumper cable to another car battery work, without buying extra gear? With average use, you probably replace 2 batteries thru the car's lifetime anyway.
Great video. Would have been cool to see the hydrometer test on the original battery since it was a serviceable unit. Possible that some distilled water could have improved its test results. But the weeping did warrant the change. I'm curious though why not use a more modern gel cell battery to avoid the off gassing and weeping issue? Thank you for the great tool suggestions.
Tim Gossett yeah, we have actually have an Optima in Eva and it has been great. We bought another and it was junk! The company wouldn’t take it back. We just went cheap this time. Costco. Maybe we should have but they can be hit or miss and expensive. Heidi

Again very helpfull!!! Have always had problems with my 1996 993 engine dying for several minutes after a battery going dead or dying. Apparently erases the computer and the idle just dies. What is the OBD2 power thingy and where do I get one???? You are soo good at explaining this stuff-please keep it up!!!

Good Morning Heidi, Im writting to see if you can tell me how to assure that the timing marks and fly wheel are aligned on a 1991 3,6, naturally aspirated engine. I want to assure that the fly wheel is positioned properly in respect to the fly wheel sensor and timing chain (engine timing marks. Can you assist.

If you buy a good CTEK trickle charger. It will have a function for this. That way you don't have to buy multiple tools.
Does it send an AC single through the battery to determine the AC Inductance of each cell and then use some fancy math to arrive at the true capacitance of the battery?
@6:58+: Your advice here about disconnecting the negative cable/ terminal first is sound, but your explanation differs from my limited understanding of electrical systems. As I understand it...
First, the danger isn't that bridging the frame to the positive terminal would short the battery, but that you'll short or energize other circuits to which the battery is connected. (I think that in many cars, you can fry the ECU that way.)
Second, the negative battery terminal doesn't ground to the chassis, frame, block, etc., but the other way around--i.e., they all ground to the negative battery terminal. (Perhaps I just misunderstood you on this point and this is in fact what you were saying as well.)
Third, your explanation reasonably relies on the "conventional" model of electrical flow (i.e., that the flow originates from the positive terminal and runs to any ground or lower electrical potential), which is fine, but it can sometimes be important to understand that conventional flow is exactly opposite of the actual flow of electrons. The actual flow of electrons is from the negative terminal to the positive (which wasn't discovered until after the conventional model was theorized), so all those grounding wires that link everything to the negative terminal are actually ensuring that many circuits might be inadvertently energized by providing a path to the positive terminal (e.g., bridging the frame to the positive terminal).
At least, that's my understanding, and it all leads back to the same advice about disconnecting the negative terminal first... but for slightly different reasons.
It really is a safety issue... The second the wrench connects with the frame from the positive terminal it will weld itself to the frame. Your first instinct will be to grab the wrench which is now almost cherry red. This will give you 3rd degree burns on your fingers and while your are recoiling in pain, the battery overheats and sprays sulphuric acid all over the place. So, super bad to touch the positive terminal with anything metal with the ground still connected.

Thank you for your very well done videos. I bought the Schumacher OBD battery connector. My NOCO battery capacitor that I use to jump my cars has a cable connector, but that cable has a male cigarette lighter end , just like the end from the Schumacher. Where do I get a male to male connector? Or should I not use the solid state capacitor starter pack for my 12V source?

One end of the memory saver plugs into the obdII connector. Where exactly does the other end connect to? I've seen a small memory saver that plugs into the obdII so small it fits into a pocket. Injectronic?
Idea of this is to power your car computer while you switch the old battery with new battery, so other end of OBD cable goes to some backup car battery you must have for this to work.

I would think you could leave it plugged in indefinitely... Just be super sure to insulate the battery terminals and watch your power supply. I wouldn't use a battery charger alone as a power supply, but you could use a battery and then keep a tender on that battery. The car shouldn't know the difference. Like, if you have a good battery, but it is the wrong size and you are waiting on the proper battery to arrive. Should be fine :) F

Hello, Franny. Do you know if OBD1 cars (like the 1995 BMW M3) have a similar tool to keep it live as you change the battery?
For the older cars if you don't want to loose radio codes and such, I would use just the lighter socket. Just be sure that it is not switched before you start. Outside of that you can either tie into something like the circuit to the radio memory that is always on or the actual cables themselves. The latter being the most problematic ;)
I have a standalone OBD2 scanner with option to install a 9 volt battery. The box says features include battery backup. Does it mean it can work as a memory minder?
It may... 9V seems like it is just at the limit, but worth a try... Make sure you have the radio code before you give it a go.

Sorry, but you can't remove the battery while the engine is running. It is an integral part of the charging system an it can (most likely will) destroy the voltage regulator and then the alternator in short order. The battery acts as a charge reservoir and smooths out the entire electrical system. Much better to just remove the battery (with the car off and the ignition off) if you can't work the battery backup. Hope that helps.
Hello Heidi, Many thanks for your reply which surprises me as I thought all car batteries were operating on the same way. I have a Saab turbo diesel which was ok after I replaced the battery without turning off the engine in order to save the radio codes etc... no damage was done to the car, must have been lucky.

It is more about the voltage than the capacity... You need close to 12V

What would I notice if I had to change the plugs? A rough idle is one possibility but that could be from a number of sources. I've got 40k miles on the car since the last change.
The plugs should go well past 40K. Are you experiencing rough running? The turbos are notorious for vacuum leaks. They are easy enough to find. We also had a bad mass airflow sensor that played havoc with the idle. The plugs are a pain in the buns... The rear bumper has to come off and the intercoolers as well I believe. I'll get to this hopefully this winter. Franny
No rough idle at all. So I guess you're suggesting that if I experience a rough idle and the miles are closer to 50k then it would make sense to change them. Thank you. Looking forward to the pain in the buns, plug change. I hear that could be 10 or more hours. Grief

Hi Franny! .Well Franny here in Brazil there is a pattern about the color battery 's cable..example cable red positive,cable black negative..but one day I reversed without Attention the polls..do you image what happened😢.So how do you know which polls correct? .because I see the two cables black! That is a very good question! I should have covered that in the video. On virtually all modern cars (except a few older British cars) the chassis is connected to the negative battery terminal. So, the easiest way to find the negative cable is to follow it back from the battery. I will be bolted to the chassis somewhere close by. The positive cable will disappear on it's way to the starter and fuse box. Yes, very important to verify the negative battery cable and the negative post on the battery. Many times the negative battery post will be slightly small than the positive post making it difficult to get the negative cable on the negative post.

Hi All, Sorry, I get "ODB" and "OBD" reversed in my head all the time! It is "OBDII" :) The SOLAR battery tester is model BA5 (goo.gl/dH6uoR). There is also a BA7 (goo.gl/x84nXy) that can check a bit of the charging system if that is helpful. The OBDII memory saver is a Schumacher "SEC-12V-OBD" (goo.gl/Jqow98). The instructions are funny and tell you not to plug it into the car your changing the battery in :) I love that... We have links in the description. Franny
Memory saver its not really required, the systems, PASM and Motronic will reset themselfs without issue...... maybe have some use if you want to save the settings in the Entertainment system
It isn’t for that. The newer cars will require an airbag reset if the batteries dies. Trust me, it happened with our 2006 Boxster. Franny was just showing so you have another way of storing settings. We have subscribers from all different years of Porsches. This just happened to be a good one to demo on, because my car needed a new battery. Heidi
Yes, Porsche models can have differences, but i have disconnected the battery on my 2005 997 S several times without issues. And i run Durametric from time to time, no issues. Anyway thanks for the brilliant videos, like therapy for a Porsche DIY`er :)
