Very nice, thanks for posting. I think that these uni-directional wind turbines from re-purposed hardware are the way to go for the majority of us who don't have the funds for the fancy store-bought stuff.
We used an old alternator from a Simca 1000. We assume a useable power of min. 200W in winds about 15-20mph. Our idea has two goals. At first it is a drawing sample in a new AutoCAD 2011 training-video. These videos will be seen millions of times all over the world. This chance is us our second goal. We found that it’s very easy to build and the materials can be found on auto graveyards all over the world. We hope that lots of people will use this construction and build their own Gwindoline.
Brilliant idea. I would add a cap over the upper bearing to protect it from rain and rusting. A similar project of mine some thirty years back produced horrible noises after a short while.
Just found this amazing open-source-product and answer to the question of energy autonomy for the poorer half of humanity. Is there any possibility to also spread the AutoCAD-files further than in the training-video. Could we get the original file too to not reinvent the wheel? And last question: What is your experience with the forces on the bearings of vertical turbines?
This appeals to me. I'm really interested in lowering my electricity bill and this seems like a good bet because it wouldn't cost much to build one of these in my backyard since its very windy there. My only concern is with certifying this operation. In order to be considered a micro producer of electricity in Portugal my power company sends needs to certify the equipment and approve my ability to sell them my generated power, and since this is a homemade "power plant" would they approve this?
I had thought of a vertical wind turbine similar to a biscuit fan, and wondered if it had been done by someone...great design with the barrel! There seem to be many advantages over the typical "pinwheel" design...the flickering of sunlight that bothers some people should be much less...also, it has to be safer for birds, and more durable...also, no need to face it into the wind, as it is always able to catch wind from any direction. Another idea I had has to do with the generator. I thought of a design where the distance of the fixed magnets from the rotor can be varied. In light winds, the magnets could be more distant from the rotor, allowing free rotation and the production of some electricity, however little. As the wind increases, the magnets, by means of a governor (either mechanical or electronic), could be brought closer to the rotor, producing more current, and acting as somewhat of a brake so that the turbine doesn't spin too fast. However, I don't do any of this, just think about it.
The biggest difficulty I think would be to build this perfectly balanced and symmetrical turbine to reduce the vibration that is common in this type of vertical axis turbine.
Nice work, especially the proper CAD modeling and the use of 5 sails. I am a bit concerned that it will flutter in strong winds... If so you might want to add support to the sail ends. I am basing this on experience - my dad and I built something very similar when I was a kid, using 3 aluminium sails, and the bearing and main pully from a washing machine drum - Looks like you also used a washing machine drum pully?. We mounted it around 5m up on a steel pole anchored to the ground. I like Savonius turbines because they are simple and easy to make.
It's able to produce about 300 Watt. It depends on the wind. But it’s enough to charge normal car batteries and so you can consume a lot of energy in a short period. And it’s surely enough to start your computer for 2 hours a day, or to charge a mobile, or to have light for reading the newspapers and to have a look at your pretty wife.
could be used on a boat for a paddle wheel on the sides and back. to generate electricity in a creek. weld sprockets form old bike and make one big chain drive.
This would be a little hard for someone without welding skills - metal cutting tools. So how much power did you get from this? Did you use a car alternator?
hello, sir would you please tell me the output from the Generator? if you have no problem, please send me the project description file. I will be very grateful to you. Thank you
Hi agentlumino l'm just starting to make my own copy of this design ,can you please tell me why do you set the "blades" at 30deg & is it 30deg from where you left the tab connection of the drum sides to the top and bottom ? Why not go almost 90deg from the tab ?
Great to see one of these again , I made one based on a bird scarer design we call a " flash - harry" , never sold it , used it myself , drove a pushbike dynohub from the turbine vanes with a dead simple pushrod , this charges low volts a.c. , I fed this through a full - wave bridge rectifier , then a voltage regulator power transistor , used this to charge up a 6 volt moped battery , then battery powered a flashing light doing night duty controlled by a photocell & solenoid , piezoelectric buzzer also , the point was to deter foxes out of outside early lambing ewes by moving this thing around , it was like a tripod , the vanes sat on a tiny semi - spherical home - made bearing , it looked like a sort of mechanical triffid , my old dad nicknamed it " the windjammer " . We had a band of high wind hit us one early morning , & it ended up spinning so fast it way overcharged the battery , & set fire , me & dad threw buckets of water at it to put the battery out , it was away from any buildings , no damage , just a burnt - out dream . Dad said "No more of them , mate ! " All part of once being young , it stunned me just how much power it generated from only a pushbike dynohub , so , apply considerable caution to your potential power regulation circuits out there , build in some fail safe cut - outs , ( fuses at least ) . Happy Days .
Thanks for this sir ican help my tribe speacialy those no electricity for this kind of energy of wind to light up homes si that the kids study at night. It is posible to charge batery?
Place it on its side and weight the edges until it is perfectly balanced. It should not settle or give precedence to any position. It should be at rest no matter where you turn it.
If you consider CO2 a pollutant and not plant food, then yes, we should pollute. Oil is a wonder of nature. It's relatively easy to extract and refine, and the resultant fuels are highly energy dense and easily transportable. One theory is that the inner crust is an oil factory, continually producing oil, and as we've seen, replenishing previously exhausted oil fields. We should do practical things to remove the bad stuff from exhaust, but CO2 is not one to worry over.
Wouldn’t it be more effective if the flaps would be able to move as well... so they would close on the side moving against the wind and therefore generate less resistance..? I think once moving the centrifugal power should be enough to open them back up enough for the wind to be able to fully open them again on the other side.
This video only show the mechanical Shema but we need also the electrical circuit. Help me .I have already built everything then it remained only the electrical part.
If you're using an internally regulated 12 volt alternator - and most are these days - you need only to connect the hot and ground wires to your battery charging device . Instructions should come with that device .
Well done, I do have a concern about the bearings. Those bearings are not designed to run that way. You would need to put a thrust bearing on the bottom, to hold the weight, and then the top one would be OK.
Rotor torque and RPM vs wind speed? Fixed rotor pitch means the turbine cannot be unloaded in high wind. You better reinforced the center shaft a lot. But it has a lot to like. It is dirt-cheap to make and is scalable.
leave it bung out upside down sloping towards a container let gravity do its job overnight fumes will condense and fall out of drum most oil will light as vapour ,aint built one yet but cut a few barrels
Where does the air it collects go? I'm thinking if the top and bottom were an open frame the air coming into the blades would have an escape and provide more power/rpm
The air exits on the down wind side as the turbine turns.........it will not compress and escapes naturally on the other side 180 degrees to the side the wind is acting against as the VAWT is unidirectional no matter which way the wind is blowing.

Very Innovative . Hats off . After looking at many things on wind power - this was a cool idea .....Keep up the good work . Cheers
The wind generator looks very professional.

Bearing looks strong enough to handle a second unite on top giving twice the power at the same RPMs. I LIKE IT.

Brilliant, free power. May the wind forever blow on your turbine !
Sounds a bit perverse and personal 😁😁😁
Amazing simple design buildable by almost anyone

This is a freaking cool ass video. Thanks for the great editing, plus... the AutoCad twist was perfect.
Beautiful and well thought out design!
What did you use as generator? Is this a engine from a washing mashine?
Can any one suggest that any open source software to test wind turbin design in simulation
incredible, amazing, phenomenal, and all. And why not use it?

I love it ! Simple design, hats off to you ..

Nice, how much energy does it provide?
How do you prevent the shaft from spinning inside the bearing? Did you machine press it in, glue?
Nicely done. Where did you get the bearings?
How did you resolve, that the barrel don"t slide down when the rod is up. I didint see that on the video. thanks :D
A stainless steel clamp up against the bottom bearing should hold it from sliding down.
Would not it be simpler to take a piece of galvanized tin and round it than to work a whole day just to break up a good barrel?

no no no, it did not may 300w(need very high speed 13>m/s). This area blade very small. Max 10-15w. NOT 300w
It's been close to an decade how is the wind turbine now
Simply effective solution for power generation. Fantastic idea.
What's that kind of bearing called?
I just hve one question: How does it perform under heavy rain?
We used normal pillow block bearings, which are ready for installation.
Greetings from Vienna
How much power did you get out of it? Was there a generator on the real thing?
it will be great a sistem to stop it a little bit if the wind is too much. What do you propose?
Eine sehr schöne Lösung! The power?
hi what size axle please and what bearings I have got barrel and angle grinder
where did you get the bearings ...looks great ...how do you call these bearings...
could be used on a boat for a paddle wheel on the sides and back. to generate electricity in a creek. weld sprockets form old bike and make one big chain drive.
I have all the parts & tools for this build except blue paint :(
what holds the shaft in the bearings? I didn't see a press fit.
Thunkful2 most bearings have either set screws or a locking ring
gracias
The design is very nice and practical, greetings from Nicaragua
Love the virtual v actual, can’t decide which is more awesome!
😎👍🏼😎
Awsome idea, lov it! Where can one get the generator part?
...Car alternator, for example.
Han Solar it must be an alternator from a 1957:Etzel
Very nice! Excellent presentation... Thank you very much for sharing.
Wow! cool, what motor did you use for this?
great, which generator are you using?
This would be a little hard for someone without welding skills - metal cutting tools.
So how much power did you get from this? Did you use a car alternator?
you can do this with plastic barrels and some nuts and bolts.
Or learn to weld and cut. It's really easy.
You can rent the grinder if you don't want to buy one.
@@jjtjp5761 I was thinking the same thing. I also plan to do it.
hello, sir would you please tell me the output from the Generator? if you have no problem, please send me the project description file. I will be very grateful to you. Thank you
Ok, but how about a video showing it working with a load.
Hi agentlumino l'm just starting to make my own copy of this design ,can you please tell me why do you set the "blades" at 30deg & is it 30deg from where you left the tab connection of the drum sides to the top and bottom ? Why not go almost 90deg from the tab ?

and why do you have motor generator on belt ? for another loose of power ?
bearings of this sort can be found at TSC oe a farm oriented store
How much power this turbine generates?
Doest it have enough rpm to produce energy?
Thanks for this sir ican help my tribe speacialy those no electricity for this kind of energy of wind to light up homes si that the kids study at night. It is posible to charge batery?

I have been fond of wind turbine and because of that I purchase one.. but I never seen a turbine like this.. hmmm I better make one..
Question.... How to you balance this thing so it doesn't wobble at high speeds??
Place it on its side and weight the edges until it is perfectly balanced. It should not settle or give precedence to any position. It should be at rest no matter where you turn it.
What an excellent idea, job and vid, thanks guys, done well!
Can you put it on a cam .like a combine reel.
ottimo lavoro semplice economico e funzionale

Hi! Very nice video! How much power did you produce from it, if at all you fixed the generator?
does anybody knows where can I find the CAD project?
Can I get the AutoCAD file? Please
How much power do you produce ?
Wonder if there water and wind universal

Great presentation!
Is it suitable for 5 m/s
AutoCAD LT can do 3D modeling?
do you know how heavy is barel :D this is debilism regarding used material
Thank you. Your video is very cool and useful. My name is Thien Hung, I am in Vietnam. Glad to be friends with you.

I wish i could be good in autocad like you
Never use this type of cutting equipment on empty diesel storage barrels. The barrel will still have an air-diesel vapour mixture which is explosive.
leave it bung out upside down sloping towards a container let gravity do its job overnight fumes will condense and fall out of drum most oil will light as vapour
