Our government says e-cigarettes and vaping are the latest "epidemic" among teens. So the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says it will restrict them. Cities across the country are banning e-cigarette use in public.
But e-cigarettes help smokers quit traditional cigarettes. Michelle Minton of the Competitive Enterprise Institute tells John Stossel that people have misconceptions about e-cigarettes. "It's about 95 percent less harmful than a normal traditional cigarette," she says.
That's because e-cigarettes let people get a hit of nicotine without actually burning tobacco. The burning of paper and tobacco leaves is what makes cigarettes so dangerous.
Minton admits that the nicotine in e-cigarettes is addictive. But "on the spectrum of drugs that you can become addicted to, nicotine and caffeine are very similar to each other."
The Surgeon General says there are other health risks to vaping: "Besides nicotine, e-cigarettes can contain harmful and potentially harmful ingredients."
Despite the dangers, researchers seem to agree that e-cigarettes are substantially less dangerous than combustible cigarettes.
Other studies concluded that long-term e-cigarette use is "associated with substantially reduced levels of measured carcinogens and toxicants relative to cigarette-only smoking."
Nevertheless, the FDA threatens to crack down to discourage kids from using e-cigarettes.
Minton says that is a bad idea: "Do we want children to become addicted to anything? No....But keeping a small percent of teenagers from trying e-cigarettes is not worth sacrificing adults whose lives could be saved."

just classify anything containing nicotine as the same. Tobacco, Vapes, Smokes, Snuff, Chew, Hookahs - it's all addictive.
Do you own your own body and mind?? if the answer is yes then you have the right to do with your property as you wish as long as you do not harm others..
A million times this! Let people make their own choices. They're allowed. There are many risky things people choose to do, let them have the freedom to make those choices.

What vaping product help you quit cigs?
Remove the FDA
Send them to the moon with Willzyx and Tom Cruise.
It's all shadow government.
No. They do plenty of good.
I really hope you realize that when stuff get's messed up, it's almost never at the fault of the FDA.
They're tasked with monitoring nearly all consumable products that are not only produced in the US, but also products that are imported to the US. They're required to operate on a global scale, and perform routine checks on production facilities in both our country, and in other countries, to make sure that people in the US are safe to use their products.
Problems begin when people counterfeit products. The FDA isn't responsible for that asshole, Kyle, that sells counterfeit THC carts that are cut with vitamin e acetate.
yes, please remove the ex-corporate execs
Nicotine is no worse and about the same thing as caffeine, you know, that stuff that people who cant function without, such as coffee, energy drinks, or soda.
I was a pack a day for 5 years. 6 years ago I started vaping (an early adopter). I don't cloud chase, I am discreet, and I vape by simply taking a hit, then holding it in till the vapor dissipates in my lungs, and breath it out and there is no visual evidence that I even did so. Maybe it's because I used to be a smoker and I know nobody wants second hand smoke that I try my best to be courteous to others. Maybe It's just because I'm 36 and I'm older and know better. Irregardless, Thank you reason for doing this video. The stigma around vaping comes from misinformation and attempts at crony capitalism by big tobacco to staunch their competition so they can provide their own e-cigs with additives they want to make them more addictive and cancerous.
We KNOW what is in our vape juice. It's on the bottles, declared by most juice makers on public spaces, and studies by impartial groups have shown them to be far less harmful than regular cigarettes.
All I know, is that 6 years ago, after transitioning to vaping over 3 months(I had to get the other bad stuff from regular cigs out of my system, and it was not fun) I started to get my taste buds back for food that I didn't even know where gone. The smell of ash was no longer everywhere. My dentist comments that over the next few years my teeth are no longer stained, My doctor has noticed I'm not going in as much for allergy relief and that my blood pressure has evened out.
Don't buy into the lies, do your own research on the ingredients. Just be a good buyer and know what you are buying. Leave Government out of it.
What vaping product would you suggest to transition from smoking cigs?
Pastry flavors satiated my sweet tooth, created an oral fixation that curbs my boredom eating. I've gone from 250 to 200 pounds, and am now light enough to do the intense workouts I was doing in college. All without traditional lung problems.
@vide fa flavor is flavor.
fan yes I'm aware, but don't you look at an ingredients list when shopping? All vape flavors are OVERWHELMINGLY a (glucose sugar) base.
That makes me wonder if I should try that. I crave sugar a lot and I end up eating poorly and I’m now 215 pounds and I’m a 5’4” almost 25 year old female. But I also have asthma and allergies. Would the vaping stuff or nicotine be safe for me?
machineguntongue I’ve never smoked or used tobacco before. I’m afraid to because of the chemicals and I have asthma. Even being around smoke makes it hard to breathe. Being around people who vape has never been an issue for me.

2 1/2 pack a day ended with my e-cigs 8 years ago. If gov't taxed the e-cigs they would promote them.
What e-cig brand help you quit?
11 million people vaping. When’s the last time someone had a battery explode?
It's not necessarily super uncommon but when they do happen it's from people using them on Mech or Series mods by using bad batteries or mistreating them. Aka. user error
Battery problems normally happen when a newbie tries to use a mech mod and doesn't know ohms law or battery safety
@@jayl3840 I don't think it's even ohms law, most decent batteries are damned hard to vent by coil overcurrent. Unless you're blasting it sustained continuously I don't really see it. It's not like the battery just blows up when you go 5 or 10 amps over the limit. It certainly gets damaged, but not like that. Even a hard short takes some time going to begin venting, and is tough to miss. I had a wrap tear unnoticed in a tube mod and start arcing inside the enclosure. Over 15 seconds it went from imperceptible to practically burning my leg hot and took probably another 30 seconds fumbling to get it out. At this point the mod was too hot to touch. It burned my hand and I dropped it like a hot potato the moment I had the battery dealt with.
And yet, in that 45 seconds of insane, impossible to miss heat, it never vented. Maybe I was lucky, but that seems like plenty of time to notice something burning hot on your leg. Purse might be a different deal. You can find videos of 18650s being brought to vent. Ultimately it can be dramatic, but it's nowhere near as quick as I think people imagine it to be.
By all means, battery safety is essential. But when people attribute these rare cases to certain forms of misuse I really do think they unknowingly overexaggerate the dangers of the batteries we use a little bit. The chemistries have a pretty longstanding safety profile at this point, none of them are really new. And they're nowhere near as vulnerable to acute meltdowns, even at their breaking point, they may never have a dramatic breakdown.
The idea behind best practices is to statistically negate the risk. It's like gun safety. You have multiple rules preventing the same things, so if you accidentally break 1, 2... even 3 of those rules, you will still avoid disaster. So you follow all of them like they're your 9 lives and sleep easy. But it's not like you break 1 or 2 and a cataclysm happens. It's more like "WOAH, not cool." and life goes on. We're talking seriously egregious negligence if a newcomer manages to pop a battery. If anything, it'll be experienced people building up one too many bad habits over the years - a la the avalanche fallacy.
I think one of the early big cases was when hybrids were new. Really unfortunate - there was damage to his face. Somebody put on I think an Aspire tank with a spring-loaded contact. In hybrids, the insulator on the bottom keeps the positive end of the battery locked in constant, direct contact with positive on the topper, with the button closing the negative side to make a circuit. The spring-loaded contact on the tank just goes flush with the insulated negative of the body as they both meet the battery. So when you fire it, it just shorts across those two, completely bypassing the coil. The guy was having problems with it kinda vaping on/off, or not vaping at all other times.
I think every time he was doing that, he was pumping up that battery. It may have been staying cooler, but it was still heavily degraded. Lots of hard pulses continuously at near non-resistance. He had just gotten it, first time. The battery was questionable too IIRC.
Really had no business having it. Can't believe someone sold it to him. I can't see that happening now. This was still kinda wild-west, total grassroots with the odd bigger operation. Not to mention stuff is held to a better unspoken standard now, with safety features being universal. It used to be people thought vent holes in the mod and a locking button were good enough... now the actual potential for shorts is designed out of them. Even with the perfect battery tear you'd be very unlucky to short a hybrid. If you did, I'd have half a mind to accuse you of doing it on purpose!
It's just not a thing anymore. Devices are safer. Batteries are better. User error now just means it doesn't work, 99% of the time of course. Popularity of mechs is down, too. And if it's ever happened in a regulated device, I've not seen it.
The pocket thing I'd half assume had to be loose battery + metal in pocket. People investigating probably wouldn't have consider this and instead focused on the device. But to me the most likely way of venting one in your pocket is having it loose and pushed up deep in a penny or something lol
So also these other devises can exploude
Phone battery
Car battery
So does anything else
the reason is simple, the government will lose money if every1 stops smoking cigs, its why the costs of a pack goes up 2 times a year minimum
you are implying that governments can't just tax vapes or vape cartridges.
What do you expect when you mess with the gov tax revenue. I smoked for years and after vaping for about a year I don’t do either. I’m a big supporter of vaping

Vaping has been a 100% adult thing since it's inception until Juul, the main offender of vaping, came into the picture. Punish the kids, not the adults.
Bless this woman and John Stossel. FINALLY some truth gets through all the lies and propaganda.
I've been vaping for 14 years and feel great vaping saved my life and my doctor agrees with me.
The reason the government, state and federal, are so upset about vaping is because of the Tobacco Master Settlement of 1998.
It states that the governments are to receive a percentage of total sales .
With sales going down, so are the payments.
Most states already sold bonds on the projected payments from these settlements and are now facing default on these bonds.
Tobacco industry playing dirty, let them vape!
It's all about taxes. Tobacco is big $
The government never wanted us to quit smoking... they just wanted a way to push for more
Taxes on those cigarettes.
That is why there is a push back on e cigs... because they will loose tax revenue
I smoked a pack a day for 6 years (started when I was a juvenile) and used electric cigarettes to stop. Good thing I got to do it before the feds ruin the fun, like always.

Instead of teaching people not to vape, teach kids not to smoke in general.
Or rather teach them about the potential consequences of it.
Safer alternative, however too much of anything is bad for you. A person who smoked a pack a day vs a person who tokes the vape 3-4 times per hour. I think they’re in the same boat at the end of the day. But it’s too early to know.

Thanks. Switched to vaping over a year ago. Saved myself thousands
VAPING GOT ME AWAY FROM SMOKING TOBACCO....VAPING HAS IMPROVED MY HEALTH..
Why not quit altogether?? Then you would save money and more of your health.
I was a 40+ year smoker. I tried everything to quit. I started vaping and have not had a cigarette since. I can breath better. All my health markers are better - blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. I can breath better. I no longer wake up with a smoker’s cough. I am exercising now. I am healthier now b/c of vaping and I am reducing my nicotine slowly and will leave vaping also.
It was 2010. I was a freshman in high school. One of my senior friends had a vape. I was nervous to try it but then i tried it and I was like, that was it? It tastes good. The flavor was unicorn blood. I was never able to find it again. But back to my main point. I smoke cigs now but I didnt start until I was in college for a year. VAPING doesnt lead to cigarette smoking. I chose to pick up that cig and it had nothing to do with VAPING. I was going through a bad break up. But I was 19 also which is over the legal age to purchase cigs. I still smoke cigs when I dont have juice or a coil for my vape. I can smoke anywhere from half to a full pack a day easy. And I probably fill my tank 3-4 times a day. And I prefer to vape because my lungs dont feel like their dying. I feel like vaping actually opens my lungs. Which is actually does. That why its bad to smoke a cig and then vape or vice versa because cigs close your lungs and vape opens them
Once again stossel is right. I love this guy he never lets me down.
Encouraging to stop smoking at all..
I am a medical student who did a project about e-cigarettes for my public health course. I analyzed over 15 scientific research papers about this topic. As of 2020, there is no conclusive evidence about the long term health impact of vaping. No one knows anything about it, its merely hypothesized at this point. Sure, e-cigarettes contain carcinogenic substances, but its all about the dosage. The upside of vaping is that studies have shown it is the best way to get people to actually quit smoking tobacco. People's bodies, their choices. The attempted regulation of e-cigarettes hasn't stopped high school students from trying them. 27% of US high school students vape
I give her mad RESPECT. Thank you, 7 years no ciggs due to vaping.
So a couple hundred folks have gotten sick from vaping and two have died. (we need more than someone word on THAT claim). But at the same time, THOUSANDS die every day from smoking.

They ban vape products because of the fake thc carts
smoking is bad- we know (in 2021) that it can lead to lung cancer and other bad things
we don’t fully know what vaping leads to- that could be worse
also (even if you insist in vaping), vapes shouldn’t be sold to someone if that person has not smoked. vaping should at least be used like a nicotine patch
Tobacco industry are gangsters trying to demolish the vape industry.
If a kid tries a cigarette after already trying vaping, he/she will most definitely stick to vaping instead. Vaping is not a gateway to cigarettes. I can attest to this, because I love smoking, but vaping knocks smoking out of the park. I have done both and will vape any day over smoking a cigarette.
I wanted Stossel to hit that vape lmao
Enterprising entrepreneurialism is what could be behind the youth vaping explosion. Allow me to explain.
I had a friend who passed away two years ago. Before he left us, he told us about one of his 14 year old nephews who was ordering Juul pods in bulk online from the manufacturer and reselling them to his fellow students at Walled Lake Middle School (in Commerce, Michigan) and he's making an average profit of $1,200 per week!
If he's half as smart about what to do with his current money as he is with his vape business, this kid is already set for life! We definitely SHOULD be encouraging this kind of entrepreneurial thinking in our youth and stop selling them on the "trading your time for money" paradigm.
Time is more precious than all of the gold and silver in the world. Why would anyone want to barter it away slaving for someone else for years on end?
The vaping bans that started with Michigan are horribly misguided. ALL of the vaping illnesses and deaths so far have been attributable to illicit marijuana vape cartridges or pods. None have been caused by flavored nicotine vaping products manufactured by legitimate manufacturers!
Vaping bans are short sighted, and result from only a cursory gathering of the facts. Ruling in such a way is a product of myopic worldviews. These vaping bans have put thousands of hard working people out of work (kind of like Trump's trade war tariff tirade has).
And then there's their specious argument that candy flavored vapes are exclusively marketed towards youth (because we all know that adults have no taste buds). That last parentheses was a literal eye roll.
It had to be an adult that first mashed together chicken and waffles for God's sake! What kid would've ever dreamt that up? No, flavors are the entire business model of the vaping industry and banning flavored nicotine vaping products is killing an entire industry that is bettering health outcomes. Is Trump's ethical and scientific rot infecting all of our society now?

Alright then so here's the *real* issue with vaping outside of the whole nicotine argument that the media harps on about. It's the exact same issue that caused smoking traditional cigarettes to become such a huge health burden on our society originally. When we began marketing cigarettes, we didn't know the health implications of inhaling nicotine over a period of months, years and consecutive decades. It could've been harmless, but it turned out to be brutal on many parts of your body, and the leading cause of premature death within the generations that made it popular. The vape is currently in the same stage cigarettes were back then, a complete and utter medical unknown. Many of the ingredients used in vape fluids have never been tested as an inhalant on any long enough timescale to matter, and so the current generation, just now beginning to vape, are going to be its test subject.
So effectively, when you're vaping today, you're flipping that same coin people were when they started lighting up cigarettes for the first time. There's no guarantee that the concoctions of glycole and glycerin will be anywhere near as dangerous inhalants as nicotine, but if you're smart you should probably learn from history.
sshhhh...... don't provide rational and logic to these people, it offends them
The state will never be able to put this cat back in the bag. Nor should they concern themselves whatsoever. Its a hot wire. Thats how you make vape. The internet makes vapeing utensils ultimately available no matter what "they" say. It over.
One thing to Correct, Those batteries exploding were all from Mechanical Devices that were either Improperly build or were continuously firing because they were in a pocket. People building way to low ohm coils that were drawing way more amperage than the battery could safely handle Or Firing way to long stressing the battery to the point of thermal runaway.
So... the news hates vaping... I guess I'll start vaping then.
And now they won banning flavored juuls and raising the purchase age to 21

The problem is not vaping as a concept or that people who are currently smoking to switch. However, the reason why the government wants to prevent this is because it increases the potential cigarette users in the future. It is also better to neither smoke or vape than to use them.
It's people's personal business if they want to smoke or vape...
@@jaythrash8804 However, a large amount of the expenses will be paid by tax/payers directly or indirectly. Furthermore, smoking does not only affect one individual but everyone around them.

Then get rid of government healthcare! And stay away from smokers if you don't like them. Problem solved.
What?! She sayd that nicotine is on same level as coffein? Nicotine is far much toxic than coffein
We need to spread information like this while we still can!!
When parents start taking up vaping, their children will stop vaping. So, take up vaping until your child stops vaping 👍. Better still, vape in front of their friends
I am 50 yrs old I started smoking cigarettes at the age of 14. I started choking and gagging real bad everyday and especially when I slept. I went to my fist lung specialist and he told me 20 % of my lung is destroyed and that right at that secound I need to stop smoking nowwwww. Doctor told me he wants me to start vaping I had really no knowledge of vaping. But I started vaping and a year later today. I feel completely different my lungs feels way stronger and I feel so much more healthier WOW WHAT AN AMAZING difference AND VAPING LITERALLY SAVED MY LIFE.
What vaping product help you quit smoking?
Just smoke weed💀
I quit smoking 9 years ago. And I can tell you that the chemical smell from cigarette smoke is getting worse. But I am not advocating banning anything. But I can ban it from my own home.
Well done, Stossel!
Having kids addicted to nicotine vape is terrible but caffeinated sugar drinks come in mega sizes and is completely okay?

VAPING IS WAY HEALTHIER THEN SMOKING
Stay away from all drugs including alcohol.
But what about a life long smoker living a decent life to a grand old age? Life is a gamble... stop waving odds around.
If ecigarettes or vape flavors get banned (again, in the case of vape flavors,) don't think I won't start smoking cigarettes, I'm not a pussy
This video is very misleading and manipulative. You're trying to set a very nonchalant tone about the risks of e-cigs while admitting very reluctantly that the verdict isn't entirely out yet. You also sneak some factually incorrect incorrect information like "its nothing but flavoring", or "nicotine isn't that bad". Unsurprisingly you chose not to interview a doctor because they would never encourage kids to put highly ambiguous substances into their body for fun.
Your right doctors would never encourage kids to do so. I don't believe I heard a single person suggest that doctor or no. But there are several medical organizations around the world that agree vaping is AT LEAST 95% less harmful than smoking. Kids shouldn't be smoking cannabis but if I ever need cannabis all I have to do is go to the high school and throw a 5$ bill in any direction and I'll hit 10 kids that can sell to me or know someone who can. Your never going to stop kids from making bad decisions. Trying to prevent kids from doing so should never be used as an excuse for allowing thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions of smokers to remain ignorant of a alternative method for nicotine delivery. The gum and the patch have about 7 to 8% success rate to help people quit. Vaping has approximately 70-80% success rate of getting people off tobacco. Many people quit after vaping for awhile to.
It's great to see more research that has been done about this. I find myself though I don't wanna inhale anything with nicotine that I end up smoking when I run out of ejuice.
E cigarette contain a bunch of chemicals, similar to normal cigarettes, the difference is that we don't know what they are. The thing that's scary is that a bunch of people are ending up in hospitals and the for no apparent reason except the fact that they vape.
Do you have evidence for that claim?
We need this video spread more
I was at 2 to 2 1/2 packs a day by the end of nearly 40 years of smoking. It got to a point where it hurt my chest to force down that last (legal) smoke before bed. I tried everything to quit, over a good 20 years, to no avail. I finally found vaping, and it replaced smoking for 6 or 8 months. Haven't had a cigarette in over 5 years, and haven't vaped in 4 years. I don't miss smoking in the slightest. I miss vaping though, and would have no problem dragging hit of vape if offered. I have ZERO doubt that vaping saved my life.
My vaporizer gets here Friday. Been smoking 11 years (im 25). I've committed to quit smoking when it gets here. The price of cigarettes where I live is almost $10 a pack I can't afford it anymore.
14$ in Chicago ! Solo ban vaping !
Less harmful, but still can ruin your lungs if you do it excessively. I’d never do it but those can choose do it if they like. They gotta ban them in certain areas and inside just like they do cigarettes though.
Imagine how many lives might be saved if vaping were acceptable as a means to quit combustible tobacco.
Pharmaceutical companies prefer the official methods of quitting, until you go back to smoking cigarettes and need their drugs again, which have a ridiculously high rate of failure.
I think Americans should worry more about over eating instead of smoking
I don't get why groups talk about nicotine like it's poison. It's not. Nicotine doesn't kill people nor cause health problems. Minors have been smoking for hundreds of years. I smoked sometimes when I was a minor. Nicotine didn't hurt me. The smoke is the bad part. I would rather have my kids vape than smoke cigs or weed. No common sense nor wisdom any longer.
