Any update? I just discovered this channel a few weeks ago but damn. I'm teaching piano and I'm in complete awe before Tom's mastery of the instrument. The news of this accident really bummed me.
I'm VERY happy to hear this update from Tom's blog and I wish him a continued recovery! 3.19.18 - We had a nice visit with Tom today. Speech is progressing slowly but it is still a struggle for him to annunciate his words clearly. He seems to be remembering to hold his head up when he speaks. He was in excellent spirits and as always was joking around with us and laughed.
I love everything about this video, but I especially love how you can pinpoint the music lovers as they casually filter through. A lot of them will turn their heads, some will slow down as they walk, but there's one who really catches my attention. It's the little Tom Sawyer kid, who walks up around 2:52. He stands transfixed by Tom's playing for a few moments, then, when he's obviously called back by his parent, he dances off. He probably won't remember this particular instance in his life, but the fact that Tom's playing was so effective that it captivated the attention of a child for just a few moments -- well, that speaks volumes about the power of music, and the kind of joy that Tom brought into the world. It's a tragedy that his musical light has been dimmed, but I hope and pray that he'll work his way back to the piano one day. In the interim, I'm so happy that these videos exist, because they remind me about just how wonderful the world is, even when it seems so bleak.
As a big fan of ragtime and an admirer of Tom, I always keep him in my thoughts. Now a little more, though. Should you see him anytime soon, wish him all the best from a stranger on TH-cam!
I won't see him soon as I'm too far away (unless some folks plan to visit during this weekend's ragtime festival in Sutter Creek), but even so my understanding is he will remain unconscious for several weeks, maybe a couple months. The festival will be tough to enjoy without him. We're still getting over the loss of Kitty Wilson, the washboard player seen in many of my videos playing with Tom and others. Tom had better stay with us!!
I find this difficult to read. Tom has been a major inspiration for me, and pretty much the sole reason I have the collected solo piano works of Scott Joplin adorning my piano pretty much permanently. Please keep us updated and let us know if there's anything we can do to help! And to you too, of course, my sincere thanks for spreading him on TH-cam. All the best!
I remember walking through downtown Santa Cruz when I was just a few years old and seeing this exact moment. It feels really nostalgic to see it uploaded to TH-cam. Wishing Tom the best, hopefully he’ll play again one day.

As for Maple Leaf, there's a video from last year where he plays it in all 12 major keys with Daniel Souvigny. So much fun. I've been watching videos of Tom for a long time now and I have always enjoyed them. I hope he makes a full recovery. Best wishes from a long time fan.
I'm really sorry to hear. Keep us up-to-date and if there's anything we can do (medical bills?) let us know.
I really hope he's okay! I love to see him play, and hope he has a speedy recovery.

Best wishes to Tom for a speedy recovery. I like how he brought so much life to some well known video game music.

I love how this casual performance is legitimately the best rendition of the piece BY FAR.

@@707Pascal Me too. He really put some magic spice into this one. He could really do the same with almost any rag. Absolute wizard of a musician
