  • New to The Fast Lane With Joe Tunney? Here's a short, funny video to get you up to speed: • Joe Tunney car salesma...
    The 2004 Honda S2000 is actually the 7th S-platform convertible made by Honda...going back to the original S360.
    Daisuke Sawai designed both the original SSM 5 cylinder show car unveiled at Geneva in 1995. He also designed the all new 2000 Honda S2000 which was initially sold in 1999.
    The S-model cars are as follows:
    1962: S360 (none sold)
    1963: S500 chain drive convertible with 9500 rpm redline
    1964: S600 dual chain drive coupe and convertible
    1966: S800 70hp, 10,000 rpm redline and 100 mph
    AP1 S2000 has the Honda F20C engine in Japan with 247 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque
    AP1 (US Spec) has the Honda F20C1 engine with 237 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque.
    Engine rev limiter is set at 9200 rpm yielding a mean piston speed of 25.9 mps, an all-time record.
    2004 is the first year of the AP2 with a 2157 cc F22c1 engine with 237 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, 17 inch wheels, stiffer subframe, different suspension settings and 8300 rpm rev limit.
    The AP2 S2000 also has carbon fiber synchros instead of brass and shorter gearing 1-5 and longer gearing in 6th gear.
    The AP1 S2000 was built in Takanezawa, alongside the Acura NSX. The Ap2 S2000 was built in Suzuka. Both models feature a 94.5 inch wheelbase, power convertible top, 2809 lb weight and ideal 50/50 weight distribution with rear wheel drive and a longitudinally mounted front mid engine.
    Soichiro Honda was fired by Toyota, rose to prominence only to see his factory bombed to ruin in WW2. He raised enough capital for one last go and made a great success of himself only to lose everything in a massive earthquake. Soichiro Honda is one of the single most important people in the history of the car business and a model of perseverance.

    In terms of pure engineering, this thing shouldn’t exist. They lost money on each sale, to celebrate their 50th anniversary. This won’t happen again in this corporate world where profit out weighs obsessive passion. Buy one while you still can.

      I've given Toyota a hard time for calling the new BMW Z4 a "Supra," but I can see Honda calling a new Miata the "next S2000." It's just the times we live in.

      The Fast Lane with Joe Tunney Yes indeed. We just need to be greatful they give us anything these days. Back in the day you to be a bit spontaneous with ideas and resources could be exploited a little bit, you could also win people over with enthusiasm. Now with automation, spreadsheets, shareholders, board members, ect.... You will be lucky if anyone even listens to an idea these days. I have the same car 05 but because it’s a U.K. spec (updated body and suspension 17inch rims) it also retains the F20C 9k red line with no traction control.

    Great cars. I believe that the 2.0 liter engine in the AP1 cars actually redlines at 8,800 RPM with the rev limiter kicking in at 9,000 RPM. While the 2.2 liter engine in the AP2 cars redlines at 8,000 RPM with the rev limiter kicking in at 8,200 RPM.

    • @everycarSeattle
      @everycarSeattle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right Virtual, the redline is less than the rev limiter...but as the mechanics told me back in 2001 when I bought mine (after my transmission went bad at 12000 miles) "they're made to go all in, so don't be afraid to go all in."

    • @VirtualGuth
      @VirtualGuth 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@everycarSeattle Agreed, I was only pointing out that the RPM figures are a bit lower than what you quoted in the video. When Honda designs a high-revving engine you can bet that the engine is not going to have a problem with constant visits to the redline. That is basically part of Honda's DNA. Going all in and bumping up against the rev limiter is not a problem even if the maximum power output has already come and gone by then. What can cause problems is if someone totally blows a shift at redline, thus mechanically forcing the engine way past the rev limiter.
      Looking at the current automotive landscape, these focused yet minimalist sports cars now seem even more like a gift from Honda than ever before. Not even Honda could have predicted just how much change would occur just during the lifespan of the S2000 let alone how things would look at this point in time. These are iconic cars and now is definitely the time to be enjoying them.

      The 2 Japanese engines were the F20C and F22C, while the 2 US Spec engines were F20C1 and F22C1...I'd be curious to see if a Japanese market S2000 performs differently than the domestic one...10 horsepower might be significant in such a small car.
