Street Photography - Ricoh GR II vs Nikon Lite Touch AF

Welcome back! I just picked up the Nikon Lite Touch AF point & shoot film camera (original release date 1993) and wanted to take it out for a spin on the cold streets of Toronto. I threw in a roll of TMax 400 as well (it's my first roll so I'm hyped). I've been on the look-out for a compact film P&S for some time now to compliment my Ricoh GR II point & shoot, I think I finally found one that I like.

Just for fun, I also brought along my trusty Ricoh GR II and shot in "Hi-Contrast BW" effect mode. I shared a few of those images as well.

Great video Taha! Point and shoot has been super liberating for me and fun this past year! My favourite p&s cameras I've been using are the Canon SureShot AF-7 (HUGE, CLEAR VIEWFINDER, with almost no parallax) & Canon Sure Shot Max. Both are small, solid and have control over the flash... Kodak Gold 200 is a sweet budget film, with nice warmth and crazy latitude! Both have glass lenses I believe, instead of plastic too!
Chris, I completely agree with you, Point & Shoots have freed my mind from gear accumulation to documenting things and scenes I love. On top of that film has given me more life, sparked curiosity and helped me slow down the pace of creating images. Thanks for the tips on the AF-7 and SS-Max, I'm gonna do a little homework now. Kodak 400 has been dope, but I'm trying a cpl new stocks now (Earl Gray100, Lomo 800). Everything that everyone Shoots can't be cinestill, Ektar, Portra, Ilford ... can it????😭😂 ✌🏼

Thanks for tip, I've been looking for cheap film point and shoot as well. I've been using a Canon Sureshot 130u (cheapie and ugly af) but works great with ilford 3200. Keep the videos coming, great to see awesome content and from Toronto!

Ah, ok. It's not my fave finish but I get it.
As for the matte finish, it looks like that film expired in 1989? I shoot a whole lot of expired film and the matte or hazy look comes with the territory.i can remember shooting alot of t max in the 90s and it was usually pretty crisp.id say it held up well for its age.b&w and lower iso tends to age better also.

Had my AF 600 for 2 years now. Favorite P+S of a dozen or so thrift store rescues. Most are zooms which often aren't as sharp. The wide, mostly distortion free focal length and the close minimum focus are plusses. For street, wish that the camera flash stayed off when it restarts. Maybe some tape over the flash for peace of mind.
Years ago when TMax hit the stores I tried some. Could never get rid of the grey cast, developer mostly D76 and microdol x.. Store guy said try more initial agitation but very little improvement. Use HP5 for 400 speed since.
Dan, thx for the tips and honesty around Tmax & the 600. You seem very experienced. The flash can be frustrating but I make it part of the routine with start up. Less equipment is my jam and I wanna keep it up for as long as possible. Love shooting film now and will begin developing in the summer. Tmax is not my thing but I'll have to experiment with other stocks as well. Thx for stopping by.🙏🏽
Those cameras are 400+ CAD on ebay... Film you used have 1989 March expire time... I used all kinds of films for street photography. Settled on ISO 400 films. If you like lots of grain Foma 400. Economy is Kentmere 400. Good overall Ilford HP5+. Clean look - 400 TMAX. Nothing but grey - Ilford Delta 400 :). Most raved about - TRI-X.
Thx for the detailed responses, Kostya. I still have lots of work to do in terms of testing. I'm interested in Kentmere 400 not only b/c of price but the look, I like contrast and some grain. I've saved your notes. That again for sharing. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

@@JoeLopez nice. I noticed a lot of ppl have the x100 , it seems legendary like the aura around my ricoh gr ii 😄. Ppl just love these 2 cameras. I only have 1 SLR atm which is the Pentax SV.

Hey Taha! I just bought a Nikon Lite touch AF and stumbled upon your review. I get the "flat look" issue and wonder if it was the expired '89 Tmax, the developing and/or a very hazy day. would love to see follow up review w/ fresh film stock and your gathered experience. thx for the kick start! P

Hey man, great video, nice comparison. Can you tell, does the Nikon have half-shutter press, pre-focus? Or does it only focus when shutter release is fully pressed/when taking the shot? Thanks.
Paul! Great question. When the shutter is pressed halfway on the Nikon it locks focus and exposure.👌🏽 does that help? Thank you for taking the time to watch 🙏🏽🙏🏽

I think you have to shoot for the shadows like if you have iso 400 you can set your camera to 200 or 100 cuz when you underexpose film il will get that mate feel, for this type of point and shoot you can tape de dxcode of the film and it will automatically set to 100!

I use a 8.1 megapixel Ricoh gr digital camera from 2006 and a Nikon lite touch zoom 70. I use it mostly on 28mm
Nice, Neil! I still use my Nikon Lite Touch AF for street on film and love the panorama feature.
Make sure you shoot fresh film in the AF600.
When using expired film with the point and shoot use some electrical tape to put over the dx code on the film canister. Usually when PnS cameras can’t read the dx code on the film they default to 100 iso so if you were shooting this 400 speed at 100 iso, the photos wouldn’t have looked as “muddy” or dark. Luckily this film was stored in decent conditions so 400 worked, but if this film were treated any differently the results would have varied.
When it comes to expired film you need to expose it more light the older it gets. Rule of thumb is every 10 years is a stop of light more give or take. To compensate for shooting at super low iso i sometimes push a stop or two in development so I can still shoot at a convenient iso. Just my experience, but still cool street shots🤌🏼

TMAX 400 is known for its contrast so not sure why you got such flat photos. Maybe a bad roll or bad development somehow. Myself I love TRI-X 400 for street. Beautiful contrast and old school grain. I have been shooting Olympus point and shoot and loving it.
Terry! You make a great point. I feel maybe it being an expired roll + bad development had something to do with it? I'm gonna try a roll that you've used, the tri-x 400 for street. I'm hype for some old school grain and contrast. Thanks for watching 🙏🏽
