Great video! We always had the canned cranberry sauce growing up. I loved the "lines from the tin can"!!!! I'd use the leftover corn for corn spoon bread. Add a Jiffy Cornbread mix, and egg and a bit of sour cream. I'd use that spicy ketchup and cranberry sauce to make a 'gravy' for frozen meatballs. I'd make potato pancakes with the mashed potatoes and serve with the frozen meatballs. And I'd eat the stuffing cold from the fridge at 2:00 AM when everyone else is sleeping! ha ha
My mom used to save the water from boiling potatoes to put in with the gravy.. the starch from the potatoes helped thicken the gravy.. she also added a bit of flour to the pan as well..
Truly appreciate the way you break down the costs to give everyone an idea what the approximate costs will be and what they might want to omit or even add if they have a little more to spend. If you figure how many that meal fed and the leftovers it provided it was not only a delicious meal incredibly inexpensive. You’re filling a real need here!
If you don't have a piping bag, you can use a ziploc and snip the corner off. It works good with the eggs as well as the potatoes for the twice baked potatoes! Another cheap app is seasoned oyster crackers: season the crackers with ranch seasoning, and melted butter. Bake in the oven for 10 min at 250. That is the bare bones/cheap recipe. You can add anything like Italian seasoning, garlic, onion, etc. Very versatile. Excellent vid!
I’m so glad you put this out. The idea that so many Americans would consider skipping the soul of American tradition because our leadership failed to support our economic interests is so sad. Thank you for helping people see they don’t have to give up a nice Thanksgiving meal in 2022.
Great recommendations,Maria. I decided to forgo the Turkey this year. Using Chicken breast & chicken thighs instead. Doing the same sides as I always do. Garlic mashed potatoes, scalloped corn, green bean casserole, jello salad, cranberry sauce & deviled eggs. Yum❣️
A few inexpensive ideas I've seen this year already: a chicken and stuffing casserole in lieu of a turkey. Corn, green beans or carrots and mashed potatoes prepared simply is always budget friendly. The one I saw today that looked amazing was a Brie and Cranberry Grilled Cheese (the brie goes further by adding mozzarella, which also gives it a more traditional, stringy texture) You may option to add turkey or chicken. And for a simple dessert, some baked apples, with core removed, stuffed with brown sugar, raisins, nuts (if you have them). Baked on their own is okay, too. Although I think a dump cake with a fruit filling to make a cobbler may be less expensive.
I appreciate how you always promote seeking help where it's available for those struggling with food insecurity. Also worth noting is local churches are happy to help ANYONE-you don't need to be a member of their church, nor do you even need to follow their specific faith-based beliefs. They really just want to get food on your table and into your bellies. :)
Great video I think these all look eminently edible and good and easy. Definitely going to remember the heavy cream in the pudding pie. If you think your family might freak over the tenderloins and someone really likes dark meat my stores normally have thighs and or legs and if that's all you were cooking that would probably take about the same time as your tenderloins and you could probably put them on the same sheet as The tenderloins. Looked good as usual Maria I appreciate you doing these. My granddaughters were getting food at the food pantry sometimes when they were little girls and they must have had a million cans of jelly cranberries because they got one in each box. The girls thought they were dessert and love them and they called them Red Dot they were always wanting some Red Dot.
You're amazing Maria. Your heart for people on a budget or with food insecurities is so special. It reminds me to think of others during this holiday season especially, and to donate to our local food pantry. God bless you and your family. 🙏🏽💕
Leftovers i would take the turkey cut up small mix in the stuffing and the left over chips as bread crumbs throw in and egg and whatever you want and make meatballs. Brown them serve them over the mashed with the soup and gravy mixed for a sauce.
Great as always! I will be getting a free turkey from my market using my rewards and digital coupons. Free canned veggies and stuffing. Every little bit helps. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
They sell turkeys you can cook from frozen! I don’t know how much they’re but I’ve done one before,it was good🎉 look for them on the frozen food section. They are called jenni o oven ready turkeys. You can get whole or just breast
I can’t thank you enough Maria as always your videos are great . Around the holidays I get stressed because I don’t spend them with my family sadly we aren’t close , so it’s just me and my bf and sometimes we invite con workers and I love your channel and videos like these because I’m able to save money and have to make a decent meal for my bf and a co worker or two with out breaking the bank and making look very nice . As always thank you for sharing your ideas your THE BEST ! ❤️❤️❤️
You are amazing! It’s so great that you are giving people ways to have a really nice Thanksgiving on a budget and giving them options for resources just in case they don’t have money. ❤
Maria you are amazing! Thank you for the inspiration, but I have on occasion used the carrots in place of pumpkin. No one knew the difference. Just use a pumpkin pie recipe, but substitute cooked puréed carrots.
You could stretch the dough to 2 pies by putting cheese on top of the apple pie. We may not have any turkeys here in the UK with so many birds being culled due to bird flu. Domestic birds are currently in lockdown.
Looks good. I love to put cranberry on bread a little salt and pepper over turkey the next day and eat my sandwich. The rest of the family eats open faced sandwiches. I am not a one bread sandwich kind of girl. Lol. Glad your kids like cranberry. I love the canned cranberry. I use biscuits and roll out to wrap the hot dogs, easier to wrap around. We buy different flavors of pie but sweet potatoe pie has become the favorite in our home with lots and lots of cool whip on top.
The pie idea is actually super cute, going to use it for a small Friendsgiving. Also if I’m going to pipe something but don’t have a pastry bag, I just put the filling in a sandwich or gallon ziplock bag and snip the corner- instant piping bag!
Ketchup and mayo a pinch of salt if you have it (there are some variations of this just type in ketchup and mayonnaise cocktail sauce a lot will come up.
First time watching. I love you made your pie crust, it is so much better than ready made crust. You are creative and resourceful making dinner for $20. With prices so high you have been a great resource. I’ve subscribed, really enjoyed, thanks!
The only thing I was thinking as I watch these wonderful meals being prepared again is your son has a lot more self-restraint than I do! I would’ve taken the bigger part of the pumpkin pie and let the teeny tiny sliver in the pan! Oh and I forgot how tiny Ben was when he was born now and he’s gotten big fast!
Thanksgiving leftover lasagna! Layer of everything (cranberry sauce in a middle layer) then cover the top with gravy. Oozes down as it bakes. So yummy.
@@MealsWithMaria Green bean casserole goes well on the bottom, then I do turkey, cranberry sauce, then whatever cooked vegetable, mashed potatoes, stuffing and then gravy.
Awesome dinners Maria! I bought the turkey tenderloins this year also, doing a combined meal in the slow cooker this year, looking forward to trying it!
I like both homemade and canned cranberry sauce. Here's the recipe I use for homemade cranberry sauce: Cranberry Sauce 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 12 oz. cranberries, rinsed peel of 1 orange, chopped or zested cinnamon cloves allspice In sauce pan, combine all ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5 to 10 minutes, until all berries have popped. Cool.
Thanks for the great ideas, especially for those with small families! I absolutely love the turkey tenderloins and cook them in the crock pot similar to a roast with the potatoes and carrots. I also find that they are frequently on mark down/clearance so I get them and freeze. Honestly every time I make them we always are asking why we don’t make them more often.
And remember people that A Thanksgiving dinner can be whatever you choose.......It's all about spending time with family and friends and just be grateful.......If I don't have time to make a pie for dessert I just have a tyoe of nibble plate with fresh fruit, dried fruit, cheese and crackers to share ........My father never liked the taste of turkey so when Iw as a kid he just bought a couple of roasted chickens and we had them with vegetables.........Easy.
I just had a thought. With those extra dough pieces from the dt pie, you could make something else for the snack tray. If you gather up your stragglers and ball them up, you can roll them out into more strips. Then take some jelly (whatever you have, but apricot is especially good!) then put some jelly/preserves on the dough strip and twist them a little so it kinda looks like stripes. Then bake with the pie (not long as the dough is thin and cooks quick. The dough won’t be wasted and you will have another crunchy and sweet element. You could have this with the pie or like I said, throw it n that snack tray.
Awesome video!!! I think for the DT meal, I would make turkey sliders with the rolls, turkey and cheese and pour gravy over them. So I would add one pack of rolls and leave off the crackers.
I love Thanksgiving dinner yummm. I love Cranberry Sauce and since Hannaford had it on sale $.89 I picked up 6 cans and decided to get 4 more today. Buy when it is on sale and have it for months ahead
