- Cockpit view of an Airbus A319 landing at London Southend Airport (SEN/EGMC). The runway is unique in that it is fairly short for an aircraft of this size and narrower than standard runways. After landing, we are required to backtrack the runway and vacate the taxiway to the apron for parking.

Even in an area that's mostly fields, they still manage to build houses under the approach path.
@Sylvia Else. Good point. I've thought about why it's like that at many airports. In this case I wonder which came first, the airfield or the houses ?
Those houses dont look very new to me, and given where the road is the airport came 2nd.

I've always wondered if the runway was really that narrow looking in real life as opposed to the simulator. I thought the sizes must have been wrong, but this is insane! Amazingly skilled landing. Love it!

When crossing those bungalows on short final during a hot summer's day used to get a heck of a whack from the thermals rising the roofs when I was training for a PPL. (Light aircraft)
Back in the 90's when the runway was only 5100 ft long they landed 707's and DC-8's (and took off) on that runway.There was even a L 1011 tristar that used that runway.

The runway at Southend Airport has since been extended to handle aircraft up to Boeing 787 or Airbus A330 size.

Google Earth measures the runway heading as 54 degrees and 234 degrees which should be painted as 05 and 23, the GE image also shows 05 and 23. But the video shows 06 and 24. I wonder why??? Has the Earth shifted on its axis? Might be to do with magnetic heading which is now very close to true north in many parts of the UK.
It’s about the change in magnetic variation. When Heathrow changed from 28L/R and 10L/R to 27L/R and 09L/R it was a very big deal for some people.
Runway 24 is now runway 23 due to the constantly moving magnetic north, it's called variation and it changes all the time, so one day but not in my lifetime, this will be runway 22 ... and so on.
Learned to fly a PA28 Piper Cherokee at EGMC Southend at SLAC in 1975 and have done hundreds of landings there ... never got to use the old cross runway 15, which is no longer a runway and is now used for access only. I no longer fly sadly ... too old and decrepit!

My second ever flight was in a BAF Carvair from Southend to Ostend in 1969. I've flown from all the so-called 'London' airports, including Luton. Where did this flight originate from?

What makes me wonder a little bit is, that the UK, with a few exceptions like Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester and a few more, does not have many airports with longer runways.
Cause it’s small
If you were to extend Southend’s runway anymore it would intercept the A127, this would cause major roadworks to solve the issue.
We live in Cornwall. Newquay airport, which is usually considered a small regional airport actually has a runway length of 2744m (over 9000ft), which is slightly longer than Heathrow’s southern runway and slightly shorter than its northern one.
It has often hosted 747’s, and recently Air Force One for the G7 conference in Carbis Bay.
For such a geographically insignificant country the airports and runways at Prestwick, Glasgow, Edinburgh, East Midlands, Doncaster, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Gatwick, Heathrow, Bristol and Cardiff can all, and some often do, accommodate the Boeing 747. Heathrow, Manchester, Gatwick and Birmingham all host the A380 too. And while Leeds is a small regional airport, back in the '70s Concorde once landed and departed there on a promotional tour. And if Newquay can safely land wobbly Joe's personal runabout then say no more!

At about 3 seconds, there is the autopilot disconnect sound followed immediately by another sound of three short beeps, like "dig-dig-dig", and at about 0:28 there is that same sound again ... what does that sound mean?

Did my solo x country into Southend.
I did a solo x country there form Oxford (not my qualifying one). Got a broken alternator and had to wait for another aircraft to come to my rescue. With one radio between us we flew home in formation.

Landed on the touchdown zone. The arrows on the early part show a "displaced threshold", meaning you can take off from it but not land on it, as the tarmac layer is not thick enough to take the landing impacts.

Having to taxi back up the runway you just landed on seems incredibly risky. I've watched many an episode of Mayday, and ATC mistakes can and do happen, someone lands there while the other is still taxi-ing out ala Tenerife in 1977.. I'm surprised they built it that way in this day and age.
Main problem with Tenerife was that the infrastructure was quite poor: they still had 1940s-era radar on the site for example. Most definitely the runway movement was a big factor, but now that modern airports track aircraft on the ground using satellite positioning as well as radio transpondance triangulation, Tenerife-style events are extremely unlikely to happen. It would take a rapid system failure of multiple unconnected and far removed technologies within a window of minutes for that to be even remotely plausible, as any airport would close in a state such as that

Was a great airport to fly from, but coming back was a nightmare due to the stupid stobart staff, they ruined it.
