You have a fantastic gift for explaining things in laymen’s terms, but yet still using ‘musician intellect/terms.’ Please do more of these! I’d love to see how you would score this as a comedy.
Don't focus too much on the actual samples or sample libraries used: the takeaway here is how he approaches scoring and the techniques he uses. Both of these are brilliantly laid out in this video - a very good lesson for those interested in learning how to tackle scoring to picture.
It's not about whether or not these strings sound "real." It's about the overall effect of the score with the film. Jeez. I think this is a wonderful class.
Really interesting take on film scoring. I realize the limitations of what can be done in a short video like this but there are some great pieces of information for anyone to expand upon.
YESSS!!! My man Joe over here pumping it back out with some QUALITY ASS CONTENT. You and Reverb make the best videos on TH-cam. Only tip I could give is to do more of this! Thanks for making great videos!!!!
Can't believe you didn't include the 'isn't life great' genre so popular on youtube, lots of ukulele, toy xylophone and whistling a carefree melody! LoL!.
Great piece of info Joe!? Awesome to try out different genres. I personally prefer the inspirational one. Hope to hear more from you, you 're a very good instructor. Thanks.
That was cool. I’m especially interested in thinking about the way various keys, scales, etc. affect mood. Those little “tricks” (flat 5th, Lydian scale, etc.) were worth the price of admission. 🎟📽🍿🎸
Interesting in a psycho-acoustic way. Many times while watching a film I can predict what’s happening in the next scene....The sound track will set the mood for the next scene
very insightful on your process of creating a film score. And I totally understand that these are samples and not your final score. So once you get the notes on the page, do you hand the music to someone else that will create the music for each instrument of an orchestra or is everything done with the software program nowadays?
How do you deal with tempo? Do u score to a tempo? Do u change it? Or do u rely completely on the visuals? How does one go about this? Im struggling trying to set this up ..
Very interesting, and having never done this I’ll have to take your word for all of it. I guess John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra were unavailable to score this project - so it’s plug-ins instead? LOL.
The strings supporting the piano are so abrasive, and also sound kind of off due to being in the upper register together with the piano: too epic for that moment. Something with a very slow attack and closer to the middle - as well as quieter - would've worked much better.
Hi there, we are from Spotlite Trans 7, Indonesia. We would like to ask for permission to use ur youtube videos for our show. This will be shown on this Sunday, 9 February 2020. We will put credit title for ur channel and footage.
Yeah, but it's the combination of harmony, melody and rhythm what makes music. You could add instrumentation and production to that list, and boy, you could get a whole bunch of stuff that is unlike anything else, but still works (Morricone, Vangelis, Williams). For me, the music in this video "doesn't work". Maybe it's just a taste thing... I prefer to hear Joe play some guitar
21 minutes for four styles of music is just enough time to give you an idea of how to hit the genre clichés for each style. What you do with that information is up to you.
Low budget. This guy is very talented however and kudos to any trained musician who has figured out how to make a living with their craft, since 96% don’t.
Low budget? It's a 21min long free video covering some stock footage. What were you expecting? It's not likely to give you the keys to the kingdom, but it might be enough for you to go on the quest to find them. More on the Synth Sci-fi side would be nice. Or surf guitar (extending your great Spaghetti Western video...)
Jesus, this is boring. I’m not bashing the composer, but the overall concept of doing this would bore me. I think I would prefer video game scoring than film scoring. In video games, you have more chances to create themes that reoccur. You have the ability to adapt them to the environment, like underwater or underworld in Mario Bros. Movie score is just strings that never go anywhere. Some great movies, like Star Wars, are heavily themed, but for ALL OTHER MOVIES ON EARTH, they’re not engaging.
You have a fantastic gift for explaining things in laymen’s terms, but yet still using ‘musician intellect/terms.’ Please do more of these! I’d love to see how you would score this as a comedy.
"The director's always right, ok?" *manically stare into space*
Mood, man. Mood.
Never knew Joe is such a knowledgeable musician and composer. I want more of these videos!
The only way a violinist would play like that is if they're sitting on an airplane and a really strong 10 year old kicks the back of their seat.
Great video with solid tips! You know a teacher knows his stuff when he can explain everything so straightforward and simple. Thank you Joe!!
The horror score could have been an Opeth song intro! Love this video!
I thought the same! 😄
Those strings are deafeningly loud and shrill
Ectoplasmic Logic’s fake instruments sound so bad. It’s such a hinderance honestly
Don't focus too much on the actual samples or sample libraries used: the takeaway here is how he approaches scoring and the techniques he uses. Both of these are brilliantly laid out in this video - a very good lesson for those interested in learning how to tackle scoring to picture.
Really bright sounding
It's not about whether or not these strings sound "real." It's about the overall effect of the score with the film. Jeez. I think this is a wonderful class.
I'm just a poet & a film maker, not a musician...Thanks Joe! To showing me musical passage towards journey! God Bless!
This is elegantly simple and actually really beautiful. Great work
The best video I’ve seen on composing/scoring. Thank you so much.
Really interesting take on film scoring. I realize the limitations of what can be done in a short video like this but there are some great pieces of information for anyone to expand upon.
Thank you.. glad you are able to expand on some of these ideas.. thanks for watching!
Wow, much more to Joe as a musician than I thought.
Sooooo good - this should have its own YT channel
totally got the vibes in drama and horror, love how he talked about that depressing horror sound, and really felt it when the music came
nope, horror was cliche to the bone... noone would use this type of score
YESSS!!! My man Joe over here pumping it back out with some QUALITY ASS CONTENT. You and Reverb make the best videos on TH-cam. Only tip I could give is to do more of this! Thanks for making great videos!!!!
Thanks Kade :)
Underappreciated video. Well done, guys!
Thanks!
I'm not a musician but I really enjoyed this. It's interesting to hear someone articulate how certain keys create different moods.
It's not certain keys that change moods (especially when you're not a musician). It's the way the key/notes are applied and on what instruments.
This was so so great to watch. Pls keep sharing more information about film scoring. Cheers😊
So interesting.
I loved it.
Please make video on essential music theory for film scoring.
Interesting idea! Thanks for watching, more videos like this coming soon
Can't believe you didn't include the 'isn't life great' genre so popular on youtube, lots of ukulele, toy xylophone and whistling a carefree melody! LoL!.
brooooo this studio is a place from my dreams
Great piece of info Joe!? Awesome to try out different genres. I personally prefer the inspirational one. Hope to hear more from you, you 're a very good instructor. Thanks.
Thank you so much for these videos. They are a big help. Keep it up
Thanks for watching! More on the way!
Strings sound really bad dude
That was cool. I’m especially interested in thinking about the way various keys, scales, etc. affect mood. Those little “tricks” (flat 5th, Lydian scale, etc.) were worth the price of admission. 🎟📽🍿🎸
Love that flat 5th! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed :)
For sure! The tip on using the Lydian mode/scale was brilliant.
Interesting video, just keep going. I loved it.
Anyone else reminded of porpoises when you first heard the synthetic "clock" sound?
That was all I could hear... certainly not a watch sound.
Interesting in a psycho-acoustic way. Many times while watching a film I can predict what’s happening in the next scene....The sound track will set the mood for the next scene
Wonderful! Even for the non-musician film buff. Very engaging, what's in your cup?
I'm learning a lot from your videos. Thank you very much.
Hi thank you for making such a insightful video.. would request to make something for music theory while working on film scoring.
Great content! Keep it coming please!
midnight run movie score was one of the best for me.
The melody on the suspense one sounded very Blade Runner-y
Really helpful thanks!
What's the daw that you're using?

We actually got John Williams and the London Symphony to do all of this.. the plug-ins just sounded wayyyy better..?? Thanks for watching :)
This was excellent. Thank you.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
can you use a horror movie score for a sad scene or a happy scene?
What's the creepy string shrill at about 15.15
Great tips! Thank you
Great video thanks for sharing!
Great video, thanks John!
Lol who's John?
John Williams, obviously. I meant Joe. Sorry Joe>>
It's ok :) Thanks for watching
Well done. Thanks.
This is so helpful
Thank you so much
Keep it up with the tutorials
Thanks! More on the way, thank you for watching :)
Great video
What major do you have to do to make soundtracks for mouvies pls someone tell me
Film Scoring?
Great video!!!
What program/application is he working on?
He’s using Logic Pro X I believe
I just subscribed!
What is the name of the person who makes background music for movies
Composer. Duh.
What speakers are they
Amazing, Joe!
Thanks!
The strings supporting the piano are so abrasive, and also sound kind of off due to being in the upper register together with the piano: too epic for that moment. Something with a very slow attack and closer to the middle - as well as quieter - would've worked much better.

Do you know Dead man's "score" by neil young ?
this is cool
great
The clock kinda sounds like a beat-boxing porpoise.
very cool
Did this man just film score a video about film scoring?
Joe is nothing if not extremely meta.
Best not to play Strings like you chord for piano. I usually play more open or spread apart and the mod wheel is a great tool to shape things.
So, Dr Xavier teaches filmscore?
How can I use this plugin with keyboard ? Do i have to plug it into computer and thats all ?
I'm pretty sure the keyboard he's using is a MIDI controller that's plugged into an interface.
Get Albion one.
U just became my best friend
Well hello friend
interstellar
This is hilarious I love it
Slow depressing sad horror = CHOPIN !
But why does it always sound clichéd and overdramatic ,you need to learn from reznor.
people who has monitors on their table dosent count !!!!!!!!!!!!!
These kinda scores are the ones you always hear. Cliche, not particularly good, not exceptionally bad. Just reaaaallly bland and yucky
you Only have 12 tones and it works, what else is there to do
Yeah, but it's the combination of harmony, melody and rhythm what makes music. not even close to real string players... arrangements are weak tho sorry
Horror was not really suitable according to my opinion
Ugh horrible cheap generic sounding sample library audio
Holy shit, have you, like ever, composed for strings? Violins don't sound like that, nor would ever play like that.
First

Aaron Foltz requiem for a dream composer? What about him?
Aaron Foltz there are lots of talented composers. I think the process of composing film score would be incredibly boring.
Great video!
