    Rick is so modest. He knows sooooooooooo much but is always humble. He explains things in a way any level musician can understand. His love of music shines through every moment.

    I have a feeling these lessons are much deeper and give greater insight to Film Scoring than Hans Zimmer's Masterclass which seems to just blow smoke up your ass about pursuing your passion.

      true. all masterclasses are like that to be fair. I think it's the producers at fault rather than the creatives they approach.

    It sounds “Spanish” because flamenco is fundamentally Phrygian . Check out Triana (group) for an absolutely mind blowing style where prog rock with flamenco. All thanks to Phrygian mode! You’ll like them!

    Awesome as always! The phrygian mode has that Indian-Arabesque flavor (IMHO) to it because you have half a step above the root and the same above the perfect fifth. A friend and colleague who is a lot into Indian (and Middle Eastern) music told me that there are actually two different intonations of the half step above the root and half step above the perfect fifth: when you hold it, it is slightly sharp compared to well-tempered (edit: I meant equal-tempered of course) - (I always noticed that BTW), and when it's a passing note down to the root or 5th it is slightly flat. That is within the context of a melody line over a bass pedal tone, not polyphonic. Just my usual ramblings ;-) Anyway: great stuff as always! Thanks for sharing!

    • @truefilm1556
      @truefilm1556 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. I was almost mentioning this scale which sounds great. Yes: there is that harmonic minor scale pattern with the minor third in it - shifted. The origin is clearly Indian-Arabic, since flamenco is Spainish gypsy music. I happen to like it a lot!

    First, Thanks Rick for your time doing these videos. And second, As Spanish, I know very well this mode, because our traditional music: Flamenco, is based in this mode. Maybe you should have mention our own "blue note" the major third contained in our Spanish frigian, as well as how we actually use this mode, using both thirds indistinctly, and the chords we usually use when we play with this mode. Maybe in another video you could spread this knowledge! Cheers!

  • @marshallsweatherhiking1820
    @marshallsweatherhiking1820 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The soundtrack to the movie Jacob's Ladder is memorable example of this I think. It's memorable in the way it seamlessly goes back and forth from a subdued "dark" sounding phrygian mode into a soaring ethereal "church melody" that sounds like it's in a nearby major scale to me. I don't understand music theory enough to describe it, but whatever technique that soundtrack uses, it creates a very intense emotional impact.

    In Indian classical music, it is called " raag bhairavi" or bhairavi mood.

    • @vikrantverma1125
      @vikrantverma1125 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Phrygian mode is not equivalent to Raag Bhairavi because a raag is much more than the set of notes. It can rather be compared to the Bhairavi thaat of Hindustani Classical music but that's again not exactly the same.

    I liked your tune. E-Phrygian. I am sure you know, but for the others this is called "Por Arriba" in the Spanish world. It is one of two commonly used Phrygian scales used in the Flamenco world and in general Spanish music. A typical chord progression (Andalusian progression) is Am-G-F-E. Start with the barre at the 5th position. The other common scale is A-Phrygian, also called "Por Medio." The typical Andalusian progression for this one is Dm-C-Bb-A (use the two-finger Spanish A to leave the ring finger free). Lots of Phrygian used in heavy metal. Dylan used an Andalusian progression in "One more cup of coffee." I have found it very easy to lay Spanish sounding melodies over these two progressions.

    Hi Rick, just wanted to say that I appreciate everything you're doing here. I've been looking for ways to teach my niece and nephew about music theory as they're just joining their middle school band for the first time. Hearing about not only theory, but the way you relate music to your kids is incredibly inspiring. Although, I haven't had to do much work since they're so incredibly smart and so willing to learn. I found out they have very good relative pitch, it just needs some training. What advice would you give to an overly excited uncle who is also trying to build a music composition career in his mid-late(ish) twenties?

    Great information in this video. The music and tonal quality of the scale reminds me of the film scoring in "The Crush". I'm not really sure which part exactly off the top of my head, maybe the scene when they're in the woods. I'll go check right now, it is partially in the woods. Another part is when she's on the swing and he tells her she is too young. It reoccurs throughout the movie, but that film score is way dope. It's actually very underrated, and enhances the mood and perfectly captures the emotions or feelings of the scenes. The best part "film score" wise is when they're at the lighthouse. You've got a great sounding piano tone. Is that coming from your daw, or is it a vst of some sort? What are ostinatos? I'm sure I should learn those. All your videos are very informative. Thank you.

    Amazing, although it would be great to explain different chords that interact in the phrygian mode other than just the E pedal. Like using the 4th, 5th, and mostly the 7th.

    The title theme of the old NES game Shadowgate is written in this mode.
