Good big-budget games exist that aren't bogged down with microtransactions. It's grossly disingenuous to look exclusively at all the "Microtransactions" headlines Jim Sterling puts out and then condemn the entire big-budget industry.

José Lages Nice resolution for watching on mobile too (gaming on mobile needs to cater to the insane range of impossible pixel resolutions, but video can skip resolutions that require a microscope).

i got three crt's (i need to replace the pots which is not a big deal) and if they didn't need work i would be using one right now and i have a modern system (amd ryzen 2800x, 16 gigs ram, 2 gig hard drive, amd 580 black edition video card and my lovely dvd burners (which will be buried with me). Now to get some free time so i can fix my crt's.

Ah TekWars, that show inspired so much late 90s tech design, I was an industrial design student and for some reason TekWars and similar future based shows were mandatory viewing by the professors. Almost every weirdly amorphous design with bizarre button layouts like that Audible player LGR reviewed recently or basically any phone Nokia released in the first half of the 00s could be traced back to those 90s shows.

It would be nice to get an actual Perfect Dark style FPS with multiple objectives and mission parameters in a single large level. Nobody really makes that kind of game...
Shelly Harrison was originally going to be a side kick / love interest for Duke Nukem. There is old concept art of her from years ago. You could say this game has essentially been in development for 20 years
@@HunterTinsley That sounds like the sort of retro styled shooter an indie dev might eventually tackle. Most retro styled shooters right now are more so following the mold of games like Doom, Quake, and Duke Nukem 3D (though Hedon and Amid Evil also have some Heretic and Hexen, Hedon in particular borrows Hexen 2's style of puzzle solving but without the HUB), in other words they're styled more after PC 90s shooters where progression was based more on key hunting. Console 90s shooters like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, the PS1 version of Powerslave, Turok 2 (not so much the first one, it was a very key hunt heavy game like PC shooters), and others usually gave specific objectives to complete before finishing a level with keys not always being essential to progression.
Now in no way am I trying to say "key hunting shooters" are a bad thing, I love the majority of them in fact, but as someone who did actually grow up more on console shooters in the 90s than PC shooters, I'd love to see an indie one day make a shooter that specifically aims to recreate the style of gameplay you would have seen from the likes of Goldeneye or Perfect Dark.
I thought the exactly same thing. Ion Fury's atmosphere really reminds of games like Perfect Dark and Deus Ex.
Sprites will never go out of style. Which is why Doom has stood the test of time, even for new players. Pixel, and Sprite based games live on their artistic values.

They're partnering with a bunch of Indie developer nowadays to build and publish some games. They still good. Releasing some good game with no bullshit like microtransaction, etc, etc. Looking forward to Wrath Aeon Of Ruin, Core Decay, GhostRunner and Graven

the revolver is probably the best weapon in the game. shotgun is actually way less satisfying due to scattering of the shot (and opposite to DOOM II super shotgun which guarantees monster kill, ion fury shotgun sometime hits and sometimes misses )

This is amazing. The more I hear about this game, the more I love it. ttention AAA developers - THIS is what we want, not all your oh-so-generic boring open-world hyper-monetised lootbox-infested DLC money pits. That stuff is garbage - Ion Fury is what REAL gaming is all about!
Duke 3D was the game that forced me to learn how to aim with a mouse. I was getting by with just a keyboard somehow up until that game. Crazy how hard it was to adapt to new controls like that.
Knowing the limitations of the build engine (i spend hours with it as a kid), it's amazing to see what those guys did with it. Really impressive.
Finally! A new game my PC can actually handle!
Lol yup my laptop is pretty much a lemon but I am pretty excited to finally build my first real gaming pc.
i haven't played the final game yet, but the teaser demo ran at under 60fps on my gaming PC. yay for single core utilisation.

Just bought it and it only takes up 50MB of hard drive space. Can't even remember installing a game that took less than a gig!
EDIT: Yeah, I'm playing on my pathetic notebook(well, CUP is nice but has integrated Intel graphics) plays it really well. I can barley play HL2 on this but it sounds like a lawn mower and I have to keep things clear of the exhaust because I'm worried they'll start on fire, lol. This however doesn't get the exhaust as hot and the fans don't go full throttle. Which is weird, reading reviews some people have performance issues. Must have been updated quite a bit. . .

A game with mid-90s to early-2000s aesthetic with a AAA budget.
Since less resources have to go to fidelity, a _lot_ of high quality content can be added. This game with its 3DRealms support is as close of an example as you can get.
Sounds to me like you just described Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. And, wouldn't you know it, it's being published by 3D Realms.

@@user-xr3rb6pn9m There's a whole lot of market for retro stuff, and we've even seen indie games with horrible graphics achieve notoriety many times. I think it could work perfectly. All they have to do is really focus the budget toward content, rather than graphics.

Go figure. 3d Realms spent all that lost time making Duke Nukem Forever and losing the IP, when all they needed to do was make a new build engine based Duke.
The final DNF wasn't really what they had made.
Timing. Timing is so damn important in this industry (and luck with the whims of the consumers, honestly). Not sure if a retro shooter like this would have fared well in sales 10 years ago juuuust as 1080p gaming was starting to become "a thing" affordable to most people and was all the hype. Might have even looked like a desperate move by a broken company.
Now that we've had 5+ years of accessible 1080p games and have seen how godawfully costly they can be to produced properly (and how astronomically costly it is to even think beyond), the waves of cheapo garbage-y "HD" titles having flooded past... People seem to finally be getting the message a bit more widely: games are an experience. Experiences come in many forms...

Star Wars Dark Forces needs to be redone with this company
Indeed, the sourceport it currently has isn't complete, and DOSBox'ed original is pretty hard to play with no mid-level save or mouselook (have to emulate page up and down keys on mouse - the horror, which screws up menus and still doesn't move right).

Yeah, I liked Dark Forces back in the 90s. Basically Doom but strip away the demons and pictures of Hitler and replace with Stormtroopers and frankly bizarre level designs and you've got Dark Forces.

I agree. I mean, DarkXL makes the original DF quite playable on modern systems, but it's still unfinished.
Blood's shopping mall level was one of my favorites as well, especially for multiplayer. There's just so many interesting aspects in open locations where one kind of knows what's where. I'm glad they made a level like that for Ion Fury as well.
They should have renamed it Ion Mayhem, keeping the initials.
Mayhem is also a band.
Actually Mayhem themselves probably got their band name from a song title from a Venom album, Welcome to Hell (Mayhem With Mercy). Besides, each band member obviously got his alias from song titles of Hellhamer's early EP's, Satanic Rites and Triumph Of Death (Euronymous Maniac, Messiah) and of course Hellhammer.

I also wanna stress to curious onlookers that if you play this game without javing the nostalgia from younger years running with you, you may still be surprised at how good and fun level/enemy/weapon design in a game that gives you control at all times can hook you in.
I miss games with complex level design. Shouldn't we have moved towards increased and improved complexity instead of levels devolving into aesthetically pretty simple hallways?
Duke Nukem 3D was the first FPS that I could run at 800x600 resolution and I was astonished how sharp everything looked. The Build engine was surprisingly capable even in its day, but for them to be releasing a new game based on it is slightly bonkers to say the least...
When you finally showed the CRT, i totally lost it and smiled all over my face :)
I thought some of the enemies reminded me of Rise of the Triad, then when I saw the little prisms you pick up all over the maps, it really set in some ROTT for me. I love it!

I truly hope that this game inspires more Build Engine games. This is my absolute favorite engine and Duke Nukem 3D is my favorite video game. Proud to have supported this project since the beginning.
Having played with the Build’s level editor for about two years, I can only express my admiration for the things, they have managed to do with it. I want a Switch version of this game so badly.

Am I the only one who thinks this should stay PC only? Like I get why they are wanting to do it, and from a Business stand point it make sense. But a Build engine game on a PC just feels, wrong. To me anyway. Still haven't beating Ion Fury but I love it. It also reminds me of 5 year me playing Duke Nukem for hours a day

Wow, I'm impressed with the reload animations and art in general, considering the age of the engine. I wish the enemy death animations had more frames, so they'd look as smooth as the guns.
I'd put $ on that being a stylistic choice. An homage if you will. I for one like it. Its those lil details that they've held back on that really sell this game. They could have very easily made this game all high res. super hd blah blah blah. But they chose not to and I would argue that knowing what NOT to overdo properly is more difficult than making them look amazing. An extra frame or two maybe but I like what they've done here.

Yeah, I would have liked it if they took the same approach as Brutal Doom, with it's silky smooth animation. But I can understand the aesthetic choice.

I just purchased this game yesterday and I agree with all the feelings that Clint had when playing it. This game made me feel absolutely great and positive just like playing Duke 3D or Doom back in the day and I haven't had that feeling in so so long. You have other feelings that are also good with other new games (like Fallout 3 and New Vegas) but this..... this was special. I'm loving it so much.

8:37 not gonna lie, seeing that mall segment kinda made me wanna see a build engine, or a DOOM WAD made that recreates Dawn of the dead as a slower paced mall setting shooter or a high speed demake FPS of Dead Raising XD

I just wanted to say, if it hasn't already been said, really nice work on turning the in-game music off for that shopping mall moment. That was a really nice touch. I just completed this area (though using the word "completed" seems entirely inappropriate being that I too am only finding about a third of the secrets before moving on), and it was a very cool moment indeed.

Duke nukem 3D was the first ever fps I’ve ever played. This brings back so much nostalgia. Especially shooting the fire extinguisher and blowing a hole in the wall.
they do know that iron maiden originally came from an term of an medieval torture vice so technically

I was really impressed when I watched the video by the level of detail they put into the game. The preview levels were nothing, the cyberpunk city is astounding!

I bought the game yesterday and love it! I am part of that older generation born in 1981 and have played these types of games since they came out. Having a completely new one in 2019 is just pure joy.

Absolutely AWESOME! Old-school gaming at its very best. You can keep all those cash-grabbing AAA titles - Not one of those can hold a candle to a properly-crafted Build Engine game. I am absolutely buying this one!
Its $35.95Au so its not cheap but for what you get and all the work that's gone into it it seems worth it!

Something about that level design and aesthetics makes the game look super atmospheric, especially in those city levels. I think that the graphics limitations works as a plus in this case - they are detailed anough to inspire your imagination without spelling everything out for you so your brain has a room to think in the missign details. It's amazing!:)

Picked up Iron Storm. I usually don't go back and play games from years gone by as to not change the good memories I have with them. This channel is changing my mind. Forgot how unforgiving the game was on realistic. Since the cat is out of the bag I think I am going to look for the first PC game I spent hours and hours playing. Ancient art of war 1984. Wasn't my first PC game but it's the one that sticks out the most looking back.
Tekwar gets so much flak but I freaking LOVED that game back then!
I only played the demo back then but I remember playing it over and over again. My PC struggled with it tho.

I also thought they'd go "humadaya" and launch fireballs. That or growl sleepily and leech your health away with hugging motions. And the boss form is basically Tom Hall as Mumm-Ra.
