I lost two grandfathers this year...Lee and Juan Carlos.
Wow, they really didn’t wait long at all to make the mustang an suv after he died.
Got to give Jay credit, with all the fame and fortune he still does his show like a true motorhead and gives his elders the respect they deserve which makes him a first class act.
And what I love about Jay Leno is he shares his automotive knowledge to the world. He's not selfish with his collections.
He's one of the few true motorheads educating the masses about the history of these fine machines. And hats off to your Sir for that.
For sure, jay seems very humble, if you didn't know of his tv career you would never have guessed a man such as this was so wealthy, even his clothing is down to earth and simple.
He never was focused on money. He was always focused on being funny and let the chips fall where they may. He knows his weaknesses compared to his past contracts. That'll keep anyone humble , if they aren't insane.
@@imranvp He's not an idiot. Most of those cars were paid for by the general public that went to his shows and watched the Tonight Show. Why not show everyone what cool stuff it bought? He's basically recognizing his good fortune and how it got paid for.

It's a shame corporate America doesn't appreciate people like him. They can't relate and are afraid of his type and usually force them to comform or find a way to push them out of the company. Instead of being creative they "trim" budgets and lay workers off to look good to Wall Street.

Bob was a neighbor of ours, a gentleman and well loved in the car club community. Lee, of course, is no longer with us either. Rest In Peace to both of these men!
I always had an appreciation for Mr. Iococca. He was not only a brilliant engineer, but the former president of Ford, the CEO of Chrysler and their spokesman... and he wore well tailored suits back in the day. Classy guy.

Im really glad to see how the american muscle cars are growing again, this new mustang, the 6th gen camaro and the hellcat are just the top of an iceberg that is going to shake the world wide automotive industry, you may not like the mustang as a brand, or maybe you cannot think as the mustang as something else than the rival car (this come from a diehard camaro owner) but the car is really a nice piece of art, Im not gonna buy one, but Im 100% sure this car will bring a smile to it future owners

***** I'd have to disagree. I have an '01 Bullitt GT and loved it. Great car. The newer ones, though, are just too big and bloated compared to any of the earlier models and they seem to keep getting bigger.. To each his own.

your comment is very accurate !! I always liked more ferraris, porsches (have a collectible one in my garage) , japanese cars, etc etc .. But with a smile in my face , have to admit with surprise that new camaros, mustangs, the hellcat !! (ohh the hellcat) are very very appealing cars to me right now !!!!! As a car fan and engineer have to admit that new american cars are awesome !!! keep the good job !!!!!

RIP Lee. Saved Chrysler and kept Lamborghini on the trajectory. Imagine no Mustangs or the idea of possibly no Chrysler in the horsepower race. Without Lee it would be pretty damn boring!

The original Pony car and still the best bang for the buck, what every other manufacturer wishes they had invented. Great interviews and great heritage piece on the past and the future of the Mustang.
If the new one goes as good as it looks I'll order one. Brilliant job on the styling. If they've put half that effort into the chassis (sounds like they have) it'll be a real high mark.
Well put, people can have their brand loyalties but without the Mustang their is no Camaro, Firebird, Challenger, Cuda, AMX or even the Datusn Z, etc. At least give Ford the props they deserve for being an industry game changer that made it great for all American Auto lovers to route for their brand. What a legacy, awesome vid!

Mr. Iacocca is a legend for the worldwide auto industry. Innovator for new design and how to leverage production techniques. He saved Chrysler and was a dynamic car guy. RIP.

50 years, and the original is still the most graceful and elegant of all Mustang designs. The same was true for the Thunderbird.
I agree, Mustang, Thunderbird, and Mercury Cougar, the best car i have seen in all the times in spite cars like music, are good, or not good but is difficult to find the best.

It's people like you that make the availability of a BRAND NEW (old) Mustang body, in steel, available today. There is a company that bought the rights and some of the equipment from Ford to reproduce some of the old 'Stangs. With sufficient cash you can have a brand new '68 bodied 'Stang with MODERN running gear. Not fiberglass, and not "close", but an IDENTICAL body, with upgraded steel and anti-rust zinc coatings for longevity. So you are one of MANY whose allegiance to the old style assures it will always be around. Ad I can think of no more deserving a car.
As much as I'm neither a mustang or Ford fan (Bowtie lifer here), you just have to appreciate and respect what this car and Iacocca did to revolutionize the American automotive industry. Thanks for dreaming this car up so I could eventually end up with a Camaro.
Wow, Lee Iacocca - what a "get"! The man who saved Chrysler, the first time around. My Dad went out and bought a 64-1/2 when it first came out. I think we first saw them at the World's Fair. His was a stripper - six cylinder, three-speed, 13" tires. It was a ragtop, though.

I had a '65 convertible in high school. Paid $100 for it. A mountain of rust, but fun!
4th of July, Iacocca's passing on the 2nd, and easily one of the most easily recognizable American products ever produced...Trifecta!
It seems that the younger people aren't into this car culture and history. As long as it's good on mileage, has Bluetooth, and a great stereo with lights, they love it! All this history of classic cars and the culture that follows with it, is fading away. Those lucky enough to own classic cars and collectibles, have maybe 20-30 years left til this disposable society has no use or value for them. It's sad but true. I've heard it from collectors for years. I'm on my 2nd mustang GT, and love it. Mostly people 30+ years old care to comment or ask me about it. How do true automotive enthusiasts keep this rich history and car culture going in a world with smart phone apps and tweets? God bless you Jay. What you have, you share with the world with each show. Life in overdrive, and sometimes cruise control.

He actually did write an autobiography in the late 1980’s. Iacocca-An Autobiography, written with William Novak. I read it then as a kid, and was fascinated. The man was a true visionary, and one of the most important men of his generation (or any other, for that matter!).

Great to see these men interact. Great questions by Jay and Mr Iacocca. You can tell Jay was nervous and giddy to be standing right next to his childhood hero. excellent, genuine stuff. Jay is a fantastic entertainer but you can tell his true passion is the Automobile.
I know there are lots of people out there who don't like this new Mustang, but I think Ford did a wonderful job of making a brand-new design while still keeping enough original styling cues to make it look like a Mustang. You don't have to wonder, "what kind of car is *that*?" You know immediately that it's a Mustang.
i agree completely. honestly people are scared of change, but they are demanding it at the same time. they say its been retro for to many years and that ford needs to change it up. well ford changed it and did great and now they are like, why did you get rid of retro it looks to European. but honestly its lighter, wider, lower, more powerful, and all new suspension can you just imagine for one second!!! How much of a problem this new mustang is going to give the camaro this is a world class car and for that it needs to look world class not retro i cant wait to drive it
oh also i forgot better fuel economy in the 5.0 as well... the camaro is going to bankrupt gm no one is going to buy it when this car will out run its zl1 lol 5.0 out run the zl1 i cant wait its going to happen mark my words lol
I'm kinda sad to hear that they switched to independent rear suspension even though it allows for way better handling performance wise. Nothing will ever beat a Ford 9 inch rear end, even if its a top of the line independent rear end lol. This new era of mustang will dominate and continue to flourish like it has been for the last 50 years.
I agree with you about the Ford 9" -- but (unless I'm mistaken) the Mustang has used the Ford 8.8" since the early 2000s? I think? And that's not a bad one, but it's not the 9".
But yeah, for a live rear-axle, nothing can beat the Ford 9". (And I'm not forgetting about the Dana axles, which are tough as nails, it's just that they're used in off-road vehicles usually, not in cars.)
No your right, Ford used the 8.8 in rear end but a lot of people would swap out for the 9 in. I've got a dana 60 rear axle in my '74 f250 and a 44 up front, nothing beats that besides another 60 up front which is what I'm looking for lol.

I looked up to Mr. Iacocca so much in high school and especially when I started business school at university. A true American icon. Nowadays everyone throw’s around terms like icon and goat, but this man really 𝘪𝘴 these things.

People who dislike this design probably don't know how to appreciate elegant, thoughtful, subtle, but significant design. Take for example the new typography and needles for the instrumental cluster. Just gorgeous. And that GT typography on the back is just perfect.
Ford had nothing on GM when it came to 60s design.

Jay, when the Mustang first came out in 1964 1/2 my mom and dad went to the Ford dealer and looked at the car with us kids. Short test drive and dad ordered a hard top with automatic and a 260 v8. Color was Red with a White top. Dad used to turn on the garage light and look at the car, "that is going to become a classic some day".

out of all your, "garage" videos, this one is my favorite. Lee Iacocca is AWESOME.
Back in 1965 my dad brought home GT 350. I was very young about 7 years old I just remember hearing this car rumble up and I looked inside and don't quote me on this... But it was Shelby and it had a Roll bar in it. My mom absolutely lost it when she saw there is no back seat and my dad was showing her the motoring she was mad that it wasn't an automatic and made him take it back to the dealership. I just remember my dad doing a huge burnout the driveway and the smoke stayed there for what seemed days later my mom did like the minds of the Mustang and they ended up buying AGT version to 25 horse with a 4 speed... My dad didn't want an automatic and got his wish for pause attraction to. My dad was a true car guy and I kept that car still to this day. The way my dad got did keep the 4 speed as he got a bench seat. So you got a GT version Posi 4 speed and bench seat. Then several times I've been tempted to take it out but I kept it just because they came with the car
Just got the engine of my number 63 running again. 635000 miles then 25 years in the garage. Original owner, well I inherited it from my dad. Car was totalled 3 times once a garage burned down on top of it. It was worked on originally by my father and Cole Palen who formed the Rheinbeck aerodrome. With some luck it will be back on the road this summer.
Just finished Carroll Shelby's "lost interview" on My classic car. Shelby had a lot of love for Lee and credited him for being the enabler behind the Cobra and the Viper.
I have watched almost every episode but this one is my favorite. Absolutely amazing to see Leno and Iacocca together. God Bless Detroit!
Dave Pericak is a very classy, down-to-earth guy. I've had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him at several Mustang Alley events, and he's always eager to answer any questions the Mustang community had (questions he could answer, obviously).
Hey Jay! A few years ago I wrote a letter to you after I read in article in Car and Driver about how you gave one lucky kid a ride to school in one of your cars. Anyway, I was just wondering if you had ever received the letter. I drew a picture of a red 1967 Shelby GT500 on the front of the letter with the Indian logo next to it because I knew that you really liked Indian motorcycles. I know the chances of you seeing this are low but here's to hoping!

I agree with Jay, I never understand why they destroy the prototypes, it's destroying history and I for one think it's stupid and a huge waste.
Theres no need for it to be destroyed. They should have a warehouse of nothing but the concepts and prototypes like nissan does.
The good thing is that there are still a pretty good amount of prototypes left. I know for a fact there are at least two Chrysler Turbines left. Jay has one and there is another one in the Henry Ford Museum.
Voivrenetwork its disheartening. I never knew they destroyed prototype cars until I seen a video a couple of years ago of Dodge Viper being crushed. It broke my heart.
chris r ya. True. But the prototypes are just an idea really. I don’t know how to elaborate but the prototypes aren’t built for safety really. The idea was if they ended up crashing the lawsuits would have been unforeseeable and then you have the problem with registration, who’s gonna insure this thing and you can’t title it and that means you can’t sell it. Other than that? Your good to go lol

Lee Iacocca is a great leader and visionary who has a passion for automobiles. He saved Chrysler, and created some of the best cars of the 20th century. I and a lot of Americans love Iacocca, he is a great man.

Jay has money and that has given him the opportunity to have many cars in his collection. Thats not very uncommon , there are many folks with money and huge desirable collections .
But Jay went and shared his cars and his love of those cars with us and showed us that he really is one of us . Jay does these shows and shares his fortune with us and that makes him iconic in my opinion. He answers questions that real car guys all have and he gets interviews with the people that real car guys consider iconic and relevant .
Im not sure he even knows how relevant he has become by sharing his good fortune with us in a way that only another real car guy can. He has used his money and his position in life to answer questions and bring us into a world we would otherwise not have to opportunity to see or hear.
You are most certainly one of a kind Jay , thanks for doing these...
Only Jay Leno could do a proper classic review of this American icon. I'm too young to even get a driving licence but I think it's one of the best peices of content you could watch on TH-cam.
